My 4 year old write backwards

My 4-year old daughter sometimes write backwards. If I spell love to her, she sometimes writes it as evol. Also, when she writes numbers or alphabets, she writes some of them in mirror image way. It's hard for me to explain but only when you put the paper in front of the mirror you can see the numbers/alphabets in correct shapes. Not only the shape is mirror-image appearance, the order is backwards too. She writes twelve as 21, thirteen as 31 and so on..
Is the way her brain works different or is it something to do with her eyes?

Re: My 4 year old write backwards

I used to write numbers backwards when I was young as well and still do sometimes when I'm really stressed.  It could be a sign of Dyslexia, but most likely it's just because of her age.  The school will bring it up to you later on in schooling or you can to them if you see it happening still.  But for the most part you don't worry to much about it till second grade and then if it's still a problem you can screen her for Dyslexia and other relating disablities.

Re: My 4 year old write backwards

This is much more common in young children than you would think esspecially in left handed children.

I wrote bawckwards for the longest time, as did my little sister both left handed.  I worked in a daycare and saw the same thing.  You will want to look for it to naturally correct itself at least by 3 rd grade or 9 years old.  At that point I would then look into dyslexia a decoding error.

Despite popular belief most dyslexics do not read and write backwards this is a much less common symptom, but it is possible.

I developed dyslexia from brain damage encountred as a child around 10 years old.  My decoding error is in order.  My brain does not see complete words, but rather it sees a bunch of letters and not always in order or spaced properly.  Because of this I have had a lot of theraphy in school and have been taught coping mechanisms, and since have been very good at reading for my diagnosis.  There is much hope for a child that young.

Best of luck,

Krista

Re: My 4 year old write backwards

No worries at this age 3-6yrs, it is normal for most children to work from right to left and do reversals. The concept of left to right  writting and reading usally does not penetrate till age 6-7, if a child is still struggling with reversals at age 7yrs 6months, then a screening test is advised to check for issues like Dyslexia. Some cultures like the Arabic Cultures never ask children to reverse like western cultures do, they always write and read from right to left,LOL.

Best wishes. Winnie.xx

Re: My 4 year old write backwards

I used to write like that when I was a child. School required everyone to write with their right hand and I wrote everything backwards.

I ended up being told to try to write left handed, which amazed everyone around me because I started writing normally.

Apparently in some cases writing in mirror like ways, can sometimes indicate that a person is actually wired to write using the other hand.

Try having your little one using the opposite hand, as an experiment. Let us know what the result is!
