Help with ADHD child

I need some alternatives to using Dexamphetamine. My son is on these tablets twice a day, and I'm looking for other ways in which to keep his mind occupied. Having ADHD his mind wanders frequently. I work full-time, so need something for weekends and night-times.

Re: Help with ADHD child

try the fish oil, my son (12years) has been on fish oil for only one day and I can already see the difference in him, last night he cleaned his room without being asked to!!! his meds have also been put up 10ml a day he is taking 20mg ritalin in the morning then another 10mg just before lunch and it seems to be making a big difference, he has not cracked it or thrown anything at me all week.

hope this helps...

Re: Help with ADHD child

Our 7 year old son takes half a tablet three times a day.  There seems to be a lot of variability in the effects - sometimes he is a model child and other times it's as if he didn't take any at all.  Apparently the variability correlates with the pH of the urinary tract - you can get slow release and other forms of the drug, or experiment with smaller more frequent doses.  I think 3 to 4 hours is the maximum effective 'life' of each dose and we usually see a deterioration in his behaviour after 4 pm even having a third tablet at 3pm.

Behavioural management techniques are also essential elements of the treatment - drugs alone will not achieve the result you want.  But at the end of the day an ADHD child is a handful and it can be hard to cope sometimes. Just know that you're not alone in this experience!

Re: Help with ADHD child

sorry'began answering your question but my 12 month old was trying to help me type and my answer got submitted before i finished.I was going to say that i could see which foods affected her behaviour and eliminated them from her diet.her behavior changed dramatically for the better.I later found out that Efalex came in capsule form but i think change of diet can be as affective if not more affective.good luck.

Re: Help with ADHD child

speak to your peadi or who ever is the perscriber of the dexi's ( I also find this with my hubby) and find out what they can do, and or speak to them about the fish oil capsuls.

I have been told by a few ppl that the fish oil stuff (called eye Q and there is another one, look in my homepage for my ADD & ADHD advice) and primrose oil and how they affect them, is really really good and worked really well.

Myhubby had ADD and his dexi's only work til about 3pm and then it can be awful to live with, but We deal with it. My son who is Autistic had ADHD as well (goes hand in hand with his type of Autism) and his ritilin only works til about 330 and then hungry boy comes home (thats what we call him) and eats us out of house and home

My hubby said he may be able to go on more meds. (my cousin used to be on 4 lots, one in the morning one at lunch, one after school and something to make him sleep)

for the weekend you should be giving him his normal dose of dexi's

Re: Help with ADHD child

My daughter was prescribed this drug when 2 years old and i refused to medicate her.Her father was of the opinion that she was 'full of beans' and it was just natural.I took her to a natropath who suggested Efalex fish oil.Unfortunately she could not handle the taste and it couldn't be mixed with anything as a layer of oil lay on top of anything i tried to mix it with.Because of this i decided to dramatically change my daughter's diet.I kept a record of all the foods she ate,all the additives and preservatives numbers.I could soon see what foods affected her behaviour and elim

My suggestion would be go to your doctor, perhaps you need an increase in his medication, or as with my son who is also adha a completly different medication. anyone can suggest anything but it all comes down to what the doctor and you feel is best for him.
