Air Travel with a carseat: How did it work out for you?

My husband and I are going to Disney World for a wedding in 3 months. Our son, Matthew, will be 18 months by then. We purchased a seat for him since he is way too big (26 lbs now at 15 months) and so we will take his carseat with us. What kind of challenges/problems do you think we'll encounter? This is the first time we are traveling with a child so I know it will be stressful. I want to be ready by anticipating problems ahead of time.

Another tip: switch sides
I found this travel tip on Daddy Types and thought it might be helpful: Change Sides to save your back and neck

never had a problem

I've never had a problem traveling with a car seat. Most airlines let people with small children pre-board, and that gave me enough time and room to get settled.

Also, what I've done is used one of the larger strollers and used that to wheel everything right up to the gate. Most airlines will then stow your stroller for you and have it waiting for you at your next gate. This was a lifesaver for me. Either that, or just ask them to have a skycap cart waiting for you.

Some advice here
Izzy

You may already be aware of these, however there are a few pieces of advice already posted on travelling with toddlers... here , here and here.

I am very hesitant to travel with a baby/toddler again... it really is quite stressful.
We didn't lug around a car seat, we just hired cars with one in it... certainly not that easy to do either.
Also I am suprised they make you buy an airplane ticket for your child... we certainly did not have to do this... but he was only 12 mths at the time and about 11kgs.

Hope this helps.

Re: Some advice here
Hi Clay. My husband and I chose to buy a ticket for my son. We didn't have to do it. I bought the tickets online from Expedia.com (which by the way sells seats at half the price for children under 2). The flight will only be 2 hours (I'm thanking my lucky starts!), but Matthew is extremely wiggly. I don't think plane seat belts will hold him in.

Loved it and hated it!
1. It was fantastic to have our son (12 months) in his own seat.  He had a place to nap and play... and he napped pretty well on our 3 our flight.

2. It was a drag to lug it around.  No question.  Extending all the straps on our Britex marathon allowed me to use it as a "backpack" but I had a bunch of other crap to lug around so that wasn't easy.

I'll be interested to hear any other folk's experience.

Re: Loved it and hated it!

Thanks for your input, RookieMomHeather. We have a Alpha Omega Elite carseat for Matthew and it doesn't have such straps to use it as a "backpack" so I will have to purchase a cover for it. I saw one that has wheels so the carseat can be dragged around like a luggage.

Did you board the plane first or last?

Izzy, we boarded first on our outbound leg, but nearly last (due to a last minute gate security check!).  The bag with wheels sounds divine though, we dragged it sometimes, but my son likes to chew on the strap when he can so I didn't like letting it be on the ground too much.

Re: Loved it and hated it!

With kids you board first.

We traveled with our daughters to Disneyland when they were 2 1/2 and 14 months.  We didn't travel with carseats (ordered rental car with them) so in the plane my oldest had her own seat and the youngest sat with one of us (try to get a row where it is only your family to not bother anyone else). We made sure they had a good meal before going on so when they were on the plane they slept. I had a small backpack for each with a coloring book, colors and a pretend doctors set (from the dollar store) that they hadn't seen before to play with. They had fun. I had plenty of snacks and they either ate or slept the whole way. For their take off and landing I gave them each a lollipop so their ears wouldn't pop--fine no problem. We opted to take 2 small strollers to transit them around, worked out well and the strollers were light enough to carry.

Disneyland was awesome! We went to only toddler areas and they had a blast. We had a 2 day pass and on the 2nd night we stayed for the fireworks, each still remembers tinkerbell and the castle--great memories!!!!

Be safe and have fun!

disneyworld
I'm sure you've found it but on their website you can search rides and restaurants geared to toddlers, that helped us a lot to know where to go.  Have fun, take lots of pictures!!!! My girls were terrified of the characters, we took a classic with Pluto where my 2 1/2 yr old was screaming her head off!!!
