Re: Breastfeeding

From what I've heard, the best thing to do when feeling uncomfortably full, just express enough so you are no longer in pain. Because baby is not regularly feeding, milk flow will slow down to eventually stop. Hope that helps!

Re: Breastfeeding

Warm baths help ease the soreness a bit... Any warmth - hot water bottles, warm cloths, etc...  You can express a bit of milk to releive a bit of the discomfort if it's really bad, but doing so can lengthen the amount of time it will take for your breast to stop producing milk.

Cold Tablets
Hi, I used Cold and Flu tablets that had "Sudoephidrene" (probably spelt wrong, sorry) in it.  I was put on to it by my sister in-law who also used it, my milk went in 2 days with no pain, no engorgement, just dried it up.  I took 2 a day but I never seemed to have much anyway which is the reason I switched to formula, all boobs nothing in them.    My sister in law swore me to secrecy with this tip and I think there may be a stigma attached to the whole "deliberately drying up your breast milk" thing, but if it's right for you, then the quicker and less painful the better, so I don't care what anyone thinks, this works and I wish you luck.

Drying up your Milk supply.
Drink plenty of strong coffee, that will help to dry up your milk supply.......and keep you going all day long!  (a tastey alternative to the herbal remedies)

breastfeeding and stopping the milk flow
My sister was totally against the idea of breastfeeding her son so once she had him she took cabbage leaves and put them directly against her breasts, then wrapped an ace bandage around herself to keep pressure against them.  Cabbage leaves are supposed to have some kind of opposite effect with the chemicals/hormones in your body that make the milk.  Perhaps if you were to wear a sports bra this would be more comfortable than a huge ace bandage wrapped around your body.   But my sister found it effective.  Her milk dried up no later than a week after she had her son.  I on the other hand am all for breastfeeding.  I stopped breastfeeding when my son was 1yr old because I found out I was pregnant.  My milk took 3 months to dry up, and I started to produce TONS more once I got pregnant, even though before I barely was making any.  If it goes on too much longer maybe you could call a lactation line and ask them for ideas...?  Good luck!

Express enough to relieve discomfort.

There is a lot discomfort when a woman stops breastfeeding cold turkey and/or stops when baby is still feeding pretty frequently.  I agree with the other answers that to relieve some pain, you should try and express some of the milk either by hand or with a pump. But don't express too much or your body will still think it's nursing the baby. Also, hot showers and over the counter pain relievers may help.

Sage

Check it out, I think it is sage, I remember someone telling me, I hope my memory is serving me correctly!

A friend went to her doctor and he prescribed some tablets that sorted her out in just a couple days. Good luck.

Herbal remedies/teas

There are natural remedies to "dry" up the milk but at the top of my head I can't remember them I'll get back to you. Also coffee and alcohol dry up the milk supply so you could have a couple a cups of coffee during the day and a couple of glasses of wine in the evening to counter the effects of the coffee.(only kidding). Other wise what the other mum's have said sounds good. I only had minor discomfort with my second child and when the pressure got too much I just expressed a little. Also cold cabbage leaves a great. Used as a remedy when milk first comes in and when weaning your baby. The leaves have to be really cold and you just put them on your boob until they get warm and soggy,(and smelly). I'll get back to you on the herbal teas.

Cabbage leaves
I have heard that cabbage leaves are a great way to relieve tenderness. Also avoid touching breasts as this may stimulate milk supply.

hot shower

I used to have a nice hot shower and express in the shower.  Just a little bit to ease the pain.  I used to also use the pump to express just a little.  Apply a cold flannel/face washer afterwards to cease the flow.  Our supply adjusts with demand, so express little bits when you need to find relief, will lessen the demand.  If it is more of a problem where you cannot continue this, I suggest you see your gp or child health nurse

Check with your GP
I stopped breastfeed cause I thought the milk was finish. But milk duck could come again and gone forever. I suggest you see your GP (specially if you see redness on your breast or the milk became different color when you squize your nipples) if you still feel soreness within 2 weeks after stopping. If I could remember GP may be able to prescribe you with a medicine. Even though, I didn't take any medicine, I just let it gone by itself with some experiences of the breast tenderness came and go.

breast pains

When I stopped breast feeding I was in a lot of pain.  Not only did I have the regular large milk filled breasts but I had developed a breast infection.   You can really do anything for the pain.  They only thing that I can suggest you do is to have a hot shower and express a bit.  Just a tiny bit to relieve a bit of pressure so you can go on with your day.  You dont want to do to much because then it will be a never ending cycle.  I dont think mine went back to normal after a week or two.  Sorry to say there isn't really much more you can do.

Re: breast pains

I'm obviously new. I don't know what this site is all about. I was going to suggest seeing your Dr as there are tablets to help you when you stop breast feeding.  You can also try putting cabbage leaves on your boobs to ease with the pain.  I breast fed my child for 2 years but didn't have any problems when I stopped.
