Introducing Formula

I am trying to introduce formula to my 9 month old son. He is eating solids and having 4 days feeds and 3 night feed - i just want to replace 1 feed at teh moment. I am introducing it in a sippy cup as he never took to the bottle. I have tried many different formulas and he is rejecting them all. How young can soy or cows milk be introducded (i know he is not allergic to cows milk). Any advice would be welcome. Any who have been successful with this let me know.

Thank you for all your advice. Just to let you know he has finally taken to formula. Not as a total feed (still wants breast) but as a filler. Karicare Gold is the brand that works for us nd he will only take is very cold (must be refridgerated). I thought this weird but it works, so im sticking to it. Yay. Again thank for all the advice.

You should be ok now to put your child onto cows milk. Maybe he doesn't like the taste of formula. If he doesn't drink the cows milk, try a quatre a teaspoon of Nesquik in their.

My son wouldn't take formula either.  I just kept breast feeding.  Here in Canada it is 12 months old before you should introduce milk.  There bodies cant digest it yet.  My son didn't like bottles either.  I started him on sippy cups,  but I also stopped breast feeding at a much later age.  so it is up to you what you want to do.  I would start milk until they are 12 months.

It's a little hard to see, but I took a picture of the booklet that I got from the health clinic.. This is for ALBERTA, but like i said earlier.. It could be different in other place's of the country. It even says can be given when baby is 9 to 12 months old. UP THERE!!!!

In Australia they recommend not introducing cows milk till about 12 months because it has too much protein, salt etc for baby to digest same with goat and rice milk. They can have milk solids (cheese etc) but not as a main drink.  Soy milk is the same - after 12mths they can have full fat calcium fortified soy. Most of the milks dont have enough iron for healthy growth b4 one y.o. As already said trying different formulas, or having a sleepy feed (less likely to protest if tired).  Often around nine months babys can drop down milk feeds if you want -especially if eating really well and having water in a cup. good luck

I had a lot of difficulty convincing my little one to take fomula. I too tried different formulas, different bottles etc,but I eventually suceeded by getting my husband to give it to her while I went outside and watered the garden ( anything as long as I was out of sight!) as if she was anwhere near me, she would refuse the bottle as she knew "Mum's milk" was close at hand! After a week of my husband giving her a bottle in the evening, she would then take it from me for that feed.

Your other problem might be the sippy cup.  I realize that he is definately old enough to be using one, but if he's been on the breast all this time, they tend to be finicky.  My son took to formula with no problem (Nestle Good Start) but he hated bottles because he couldn't get enough out at one time to satisfy him.  So I had to start buying these special bottle with really large nipples.  I don't know if they sell this brand in Australia, I hope so because they were a life saver for me.  They are called "Nuby" and they cost a little more, but they are quite durable and you can buy replacement nipples for them.  Instead of a couple pin holes in the top, its actually an X in the nipple.  So they can get as much or as little at a time as they want.  Then they have ones where you can switch to a sippy cup nipple on the bottle and get them used to that. The company is online I believe so you can look them up.  Hope that is helpful...Good Luck!

Hi, do you have any friends who have babies that drink formula?  If you do maybe you could ask to try a bottle to see if you boy will take it.  It would be nice to try a variety of formulas.  Also you could email some formula companies and ask for samples.  Formula is so expensive isn't it?  It's hard to spend the money not knowing if it'll all go to waste.  After trying the expensive kind and having my daughter refuse it I tired the cheap brand and she loved it.  You never know.  I think if you can wait till about a year before introducing cow's milk that would be best in reducing future allergies.  What a pain that would be.  But just check with your doctor.

Hi there, I would check with your doctor about what age your son should start cows milk. Here in Alberta you can start to introduce cows milk at 9 months of age( and that is homo milk) 2% can't be introduced until your son is 2 years old. Now it could be different anywhere else, depending where you live.

Good luck with everything

Not sure where you are located but I always had good luck with the Enfamil brands of Formula.  There is one that is pretty close to breast milk called Enfamil A+.  As for the cows milk, my doctor recommended a year and then only 4%.  I did give her some before a year but found that it bothered her tummy a little, so I switched back to the Enfamil.
