im not sure what age i can start my nearly 16 month old girl to potty train.im also not sure what equiptment and what kind off nappies i might need. if anyone could help me. that would be great..
my best advice would be look for the signs like dislike of wet or dirty nappy and taking nappies off thats what i did with my daughter i started potty trainig when she was about two but every child is different the best product i find are pull ups and the use of the big toilet with little seat what you can buy pretty much any wear
did you know that once upon a time most babies were potty trained around the age of one
which would suggest that it is not too early to train your child now
i always start my children at 18 months of age, and i start with there night training first which i do by stopping drinks at 5.oopm then i will sit them on the potty next to me with some treats they like in a cup for them and i will let them stay up until they have done a wee in the potty then i will put them to bed, then first thing in the morning when they wake up i put them on the potty again until they have done a morning wee which they will usually do nearly straight away ( i usually put dry cerial in there cup to eat while there on the potty) and then during the day i place them on the potty about every 2 hours, also when i'm starting out they do not wear pants around the house at all that way i can catch them everytime they do a wee or poo so i would then place them on the potty straight away and tell them the've done wees or poos and tell them it goes in the potty you nead to be very consistant it is not an easy job but it is worth it changing pooy nappies is so grose, anyway this works well for me and i have all mine well and trully fully toilet trained by 2 years old, and i havn't found toilet training girls any different from boys and vise versa, the only problem with boys is you nead to hold there doodle down in the potty or it sqirts out so you nead to teach them to hold it down lol
I have two daughters and I found it fairly easy if you introduce them to a potty now even if they don't use it for a while just let them get used to the idea slowly so as not to scare them off using it. I used training pants for my girls and they were great . As long as they have lots of encouragement and know that it is ok to have accidents occasionly you should have very little problems. I do not recommend night toilet training until the child wakes up with a dry nappy after every sleep.
Great answers here. You know your daughter best. Doing it in summer can make it easier, but if she is ready to do it she will likely do it regardless. E used the potty for only a little time before she started helping herself to the 'big toilet'. The only prob was sometimes she didnt get her panties down far enough. Just go with the flow. There is no rush and no particular time limit that makes you a better or worse parent. There are loads of pretty panties out there though, and we found that buying the ones with little bows on the front made it easier for her to put them on herself in the morning. At least she knew which way was frontwards.
Has she seen you go? It is weird having someone watch - even your own child who will not remember in the future (hopefully) but it does help them. Sometimes making it a joint activity also.
Oh also use normal nappies. Even most nurseries tend not to like the pull ups and most parents i know also prefer them. I certainly do!

I think the most important thing to remember is not to place pressure or deadlines on a child of this age. I also disagree with those pull up type of nappies, because firstly, they are so comfortable and are actually better than normal disposables as the draw even more moisture awy from the bootom. Secondly, because I think it is far too expensive and it is just a gimmic for companies to make more money from keeping children in nappies for longer.
I started both my kids from the time they could walk. I left the potty near the toilet and allowed them to see me going to the toilet. It did not take them too long to work out what the potty was for. I started to take there nappies off when they were regularly siiting on the potty and filling their nappy. I started to let them run around all day without a nappy, they quickly worked out that it wasn't pleasant to have wee running down their legs. My daughter was going to the toilet properly and with no accidents at 18 months, and my son took much longer but was competent at 26 months with only two accidents since then.
There is also heaps of advice on this topic here in MINTI. I am sure you will find something that suits you. Good luck and don't stress too much.
im going to buy a potty this weekend and ill work on her.i got told those pull ups are pritty exspensive ill have to investigate that one... im sure it would be an good experience training her.
I understand regarding the price of pull ups. Since I see that you're in Australia, why don't you just let her use underpants. Probably a bit too young. Just use the nappy (I know that you have to take it off and put it on back again) first. Then when you think you're ready, put underpants. I found when the child feel the wet on underpant they sort of understand that they need to go to potty next time.
hi franni, if you type in the potty training on the find advice. You'll find lots of advices.
Anyway, toilet training need both parent and the child to be ready. If you think your child showing that she's ready (ie. doesn't want to use nappy anymore, or telling you whenever she wants to go to toilet for wee or poo) and you are ready to take her to potty all the time whenever she wants to go. You could start by taking her to potty while she's still using nappy (of course taking of when she sits on the potty), and gradually using pull ups nappy then underpants. Also, prepared for the unexpected....and extra patiences. Hope this could give you a little idea. Good luck!
ps. I, personally, prefer doing toilet training in summer time and when the child understand what we say.
The main age for toilet training is between 2 and 3 and I think that is the best age as the child understands more.
But all children are different and you can certainly give your little one a try. Many children are trained at around her age.
Buy a potty and training pants, that's all you really need. You don't have to have special nappies, especially at first. You can buy the pull-ups but I found with my kids that they still thought of them as nappies. A friend who recently trained her daughter found the same thing - her daughter had more accidents with the pull-ups on as they just feel like a nappy. My friend did not even use training pants - just normal knickers.
Be patient - some children train quickly and easily while others take their time. Give plenty of praise when she uses the potty. When she has accidents don't make her feel naughty but you do need to chastise a little so she knows what she should do.
Children will also often go to the potty/toilet quickly for wees, but will wait til they have a nappy on to poo. So if she does that, it's quite normal. Just continue to encourage the potty/toilet.
