Need advice NOW! Anyone have children with seizures?

My daughter has been doing this really weird head bob thing, where it looks like she spaces out and her head  bobs around violently. She only does it very rarely, and I thought that she was maybe just trying out a new movement that she had discovered. I went  to my dr today, as my daughter has a chest cold (no fever) and while i was waiting to see her, Lily did her head bob thing maybe a dozen times, each time it was more intense. While i was in with the doctor, Lily did it a bunch more times, and the dr said that it didn't look normal and that i had a right to be concerened, and she sent us straight to emerg. She even offered me an ambulance, but as the hospital is only a block away, i drove. She thought that maybe she had undiagnosed juvanile diabetes as it runs in my family, and she sent a request for a whole slew of tests. When i was there, the dr that saw us only preformed a blood sugar test, which was normal. He saw lily do her head thing, but it was only very slight, like if you hadn't seen the violent ones, you probably wouldn't have noticed it. Then he pretty much said i was crazy, that she was normal, and to go home. He wouldn't even bother to do the tests that my dr had requested! I am going back tomorrow to get them done, but right now i'm just going out of my head!

Just want to add if they suggest that it might be epilepsy and to put her on medication I would wait until they can tell you for a fact that it is epilepsy before you give any medication...

My mother grew out of her epilepsy (so to speak), she has not had a fit since before I was born and although sometimes feels that she may have a fit she can fight them off. She was on medication for many years and weened herself off them, but there have been side effects that lasted... My sister also has epileptic type fits, and for years they were saying she might have it stick her on the meds.. But mum refused... Turns out 26 years later they found that she has another condition and it is to do with the heart and not epilepsy at all..  So my sister was spared the medication and their side effects....  And my sisters friend well same thing about my sister but her mum gave the medication, they found she had the same condition as my sister yet the medication they gave her has slowed down her learning abilites...  So with that being said  Just make sure you do your research if they can not give you a possitive answer on what the problem maybe....

Be PERSISTANT!  Dont let anyone blow you off!  Demand tests!  Seizures can be deadly.  My husbands grandmother died from a seizure when she was in her 30's.  There are so many degrees of seizures, peti and grand.  I dont know a whole lot, my best friend growing up had the grand mal (SP) seizures, she would kind of zone out, stare off into space and fall down, then her body would jerk spasmaticly.  Then other times she would just loose her train of thought and kind of go into a trance.  Get help, they can do a CT scan, that is how they found hers.  I thought my son may have been having them when he was a baby he would jerk his head like saying no back and forth very fast, his dr said he thought it was just his body couldnt keep up with his mind, and that he would grow out of it, but the dr did a CT anyhow, just to be safe.  My son did outgrow it, but I would go back and insist on a test, it is non envasive, no needles, no pain.  Good Luck.  Dont ever let anyone ask you either "are you a first time mom" , that is what several drs say ,and if you say yes then they say you are overreacting.  It use to make me CRAZY.  I would answer is this your first day on the job? LOL.  Keep me posted on your little one.

Hello. I read in another post here, your baby is also climbing and falling out of her crib?

Is it possible she might have had a bump to the head? Maybe that has caused this onset?

Best of luck with it all....I will be interested to hear what the tests reveal! Please, keep us posted.

Thank you everyone! I had a bit of a sleepless night last night. Lily's not doing the head thing this morning, which is relieving, but also makes me think that what she's been doing isn't normal. I'll keep you all  posted with the test results and everything. My dr said that it's going to take less than a week to get the results back.
Thank you all again!

Grrrr... I so hate doctors. Who are they to say you are crazy? Take your little one to a paediatrician who I'm sure will conduct tests. You have every right to be concerned as seizures can be very damaging. Having said that, please don't panic. I'm sure there will be an explanation for her behaviour. Perservere with the docotors until you get a result.

can you call your doctor and let him no the test wernt done? as you would know having diabetes in your family the finger prick test is not conclusive, the must have the glucose drink and get tested 4 times in 2 hrs to see if the body can handle the glucose, also just go to pathology to get the tests dont worry about seeing drs, the path people will do all the tests that are orded. good luck i hope every thing is fine. and remember you wernt stressed yesterday so dont stress about it today, i know easyer said than done,, but do try!!

HI lilysmom,
firstly, good on you for looking into it and perservering with tests. Good luck! As I have a six month old too, just the past few days i have also noticed him shaking his head weirdly , it's like when we shake our heads to say no! from side to side. I just figured it's because he does this with his teething toys and rubs his gums that way , he even does it in his sleep sometimes. I just put it down to too much activity going on inside their little heads, and i read that you daughter is already climbing out of cot .. her little brain is probably making giant leaps with these new skills she has acquired and this may be making her restless.
Do by all means get her tested , just thought you'd like to know that your little baby isn't the only one.

Hi
While I don't have any children with seizures myself I have worked with children who had seizures and my husband had a severe seizure condition until his brain surgery last year.
I wrote an advice article Dealing with epilepsy which may give you some information - at the bottom of the article  you will find links to both the Australian and American Epilepsy Foundations. They are both good sources of information.
The following link is for a page from the Australian Epilepsy Association on types of seizures.
I am not sure if your child's condition is a form of epilepsy but you may get some information on the different types of seizures.
I agree with Jess - go back to the doctor that took things seriously and get those extra tests. Good luck, I hope you find  the answers you  need soon. Please keep us posted.

He's only human. He is not god (although some doctors think they are!) Trust your own instincts and keep pushing for tests etc until they can give you some answers.

One doctor says get tests, the other says your out of your head.. I'd be getting the tests, and I would have demanded that you get the tests as they were requested.

Some doctors are so rude.. But as I have said many timse before sometimes over reacting is a good thing..

Glad to hear you are going back tomorrow to get them done. I hope you don't get the same doctor, this person was just down right rude and in my belief was not doing his job right!
