OMG Get Off My Back
Oh, please, can someone tell me when to start teaching my little one how to eat with a spoon on his own and how to go about doing that ? My husband is on and on about that ! (My boy just turned one and just now is completely off bottle .... hubby what is the hurry ?!) .... Anyway, any news on what age is a good time to train with eating with a spoon on their own and any suggestions as to help teach this new skill would be helpful ... Thanks so much

OMG Get Off My Back
My first thought is that it's fine to start introducing a spoon to a one year old, but don't expect much to get in the mouth. I found that sometimes I was willing to let my son "use" a spoon, but at first it's very messy and not really equal to eating. That's fine. Sometimes, though, at that age I just didn't feel like a huge mess and didn't give him a spoon. It's great to let them try, but feel free to not choose to on a day when you're not up for it. Like other activities for kids that age, everything is experimental. Some things you introduce, see how he responds, and then choose to wait another month or 6 weeks before trying again.
My second thought is, let your husband sit with your son while he uses the spoon. Perhaps he's already done this, but if not, it will certainly give him the opportunity to see that it's quite messy, etc. It might open up a discussion between you too of why he really wants your son to be using a spoon at this age, and why you might not be as inclined or interested in that particular skill. I know when my husband and I switch tasks that the other usually does, it opens our eyes to see things we hadn't before and usually leads to some greater understanding between us, sometimes brainstorming a challenge.
Good luck!
