saving for a holiday???

As a single mother, I find it always a struggle to stretch money to pay all the day to day bills, plus have money left over for "luxeries" including birthdays school needs and these days petrol

To make things easier I am with (dont know if im allowed to print the name?) a christmas savings club for toys, food etc, where I have a small amount of money taken out of my bank account each week, and at the end of the year have all the toys and food i have paid for over the year delivered to my door.  Therefore relieving the stress of finding the money to fill my pantry for the school holidays, as well as having a majority of christmas presents already bought. With 5 children this is a godsend.

MY QUESTION IS...... do any readers know of any similar sort of clubs that can be used to pay for/set aside money for a holiday?

At this point any advice would be appreciated, though I am doubtful if there is currently anything of this nature around. Simply opening a seperate account with my bank has not worked.

I have to admit I am a shocker at saving.  My best friend, though, she has a brilliant idea.  she opened a Christmas Club account at a Building Society (though I know Credit Unions do them too).  This account cannot be touched except for November to January.  Depending on the institution, to access the funds you either need to close the account, which is a pain, or pay a fee.  She then uses this for holidays, Christmas money and, this year, for renovations.  The idea is that you can do regular deposits but you really have to think twice about getting it out.  Hope that helps!

Hi my name is Lana and I have the same problem and you are right i seriously doubt there is anywhere that does this. I recommend going to your parents if you have a good relationship with them or a grandparent or other family that you'd trust with your life. This is what I did - I asked my father to hold money for me we wrote up a letter stating that whenever I gave my dad money we'd write it on the paper we wrote the date I gave it to him and how much I gave him and then we'd both sign it.   I like this because if you have another crisis and you need the money for something else you ask for it back or for a little bit. I went on my first holiday 3 months ago thanks to this and I'm slowly saving for our next one but remember it takes time. good luck.

saving for a holiday???

Hi there,

I'm not sure whether i should be printing names either but here goes.

Harvey Travel World offer a system where you can book a holiday (even just a flight etc) through them up to twelve months in advance. Then you can pay it off as you would a layby. There are two conditions however . 1) that you past have it paid for within two weeks of depature time and 2) that if you cancel it or do not have it paid for in time you will forfeit your money.

another way is to open up an Award Saver account through the Commonwealth Bank. This account has no charges attached to it as long as you put in a minuim of $1 per month. You can set it up to not allow you to withdraw from it until a certain date as well. I use this type of account all the time for those little extra's.

Good luck with the holiday plans
