Does he sleep too much?

My son is 18 months old, he has always been a good sleeper but more & more people are commenting about how much he sleeps as he is my first born I have no idea!  He sleeps 10 hours every night straight through, then he's up for about 3 hours before he goes down for a 2 - 3 hour sleep, up again for 3 - 4 hours and back to bed again for another  2 - 3 hours then he stays up until it's bed time; about 4 - 5 hours. Is this too much or is it normal?  Please help as I don't know whether to take him to see a doctor or not.

Hi don't worry all babies know how much sleep they need. As with adults we all are different and so are our kids. My 17 year old still sleeps ten hours a night and when he was a baby he seemed to be asleeep more than awake. My daughter on the other hand at 13 now only sleeps about 6-7 hours a night and even as a baby she was always keeping everyone awake into the wee hours of the morning. So don't get too worked up over it and if you are still concerned talk to your doctor when you go next. As long as he is healthy and developeing normaly then if I was you I would not be concerned.

He's still pretty young, and the thing with small children is they don't usually do things just for the sake of doing them. (i.e. my nine month old doesn't over or under eat, he eats until he's full, as long as he's gaining weight).

If it begins to interfere with him leading an active life, I'd see what a doctor thinks. And of course, if it worries you, check with the doc anyway. But I think he's fine. Mine snoozes for 15 hours a day, and he's 9 months.

I wouldn't be too worried about how much your little man is sleeping he sounds like a dream come true and it is obviously the amount he needs.

Every baby is so different and some need more then others with food and sleep. My little man forgot to read the manual i think and it definately makes it so hard to keep up with him especially his sleeping patterns and food consumption.

Take it in your stride darl as long as your baby and you are happy and he has nothing wrong with him then you really are a very lucky woman.

Every child is different and I believe that there is nothing wrong with your little ones sleeping pattern, some children are night owls so a baby that sleeps through the night is a parents dream. Your little one may be active when awake and if you and bub are in a routine that works then why change it.

Sounds like a normal healthy child to me but If you have any concerns, speak to a professional and put your mind at ease.

Sleep well

Does he sleep too much?

At 3mths old both my girls slept for 12hrs a night and also had a day nap and at 2 and 3yrs old they still sleep 12hrs and have a 2 hour sleep during the day. There is not anything wrong with a baby that sleeps alot, remember with babies there is always so much to see and do they get tired very easily. As long as he is eating properly then you really have nothing to worry about although if you want piece of mind take him to your local health care centre where the girls will  give you lots of helpful advice on babies sleep patterns.

Good luck

Blond.
