does anyone have any ideas about what i can do about mosie bites. my 7 month old keeps getting bitten at night, and comes up with big red bite marks (i think she is allergic) it doesn't seem to bother her, but i'm worried about dengy fever, and ross river etc, i have tried those mortein mosie repelants you plug in your house, didn't work though. just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what i could do?
It will bother your daughter later I am allergic and am scared from all the scratching as it feels soooo horible talk to your doctor is the best thing I can suggest.
If you have a fan put it in bub's room on low, have you ever seen a mosie on a windy day/night? mosie's don't like wind hehe. Also for bub's bites rub a little vinegar where she is bitten it will keep it clean and take the itch away. Good luck.
I sympathise with your little one, 50,000 people could be in the same room as me and the mosquito will bite me. I saw a TV program where it said something about giving off a lot of carbon, Im not sure of the validity but I do know that I am concerned about being bitten for the same reasons that you have stated, allergic reaction, ross river and encephilitis and any other charming them mosquitos like to share. I use tropical strength insect repellant, I know that it would be a concern putting it on a baby howevr if you were to put it on a cloth near her cot that may be sufficient. I have also used tea tree oil and I burn citronella candles when outside. Keep her windows closed at night. There was a battery operated item, that emits a signal that mosquitos dont like, Im not sure if its still available but it was successful. Treatment is tepid bath with carb soda and calamine lotion. You will need to keep an eye on her temp if she has a reaction. A net over the cot would be ideal however I am hesitant to suggest it incase she were to get tangled in it.
You don't have to hang it above her bed, you could always just get one of those temporary mesh screens and hang it on your little ones bedroom door at night.
Don't leave any pools of water around, and treat your rainwater tanks if you have them.
Thyme and Lavender plants are good, nautral mossie repellents (grow mint for flies). Also grow some Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera creams are very good, but using the plant is even better. You just break a piece off, open the leaf, and smear on the gel from within the leaf. Another excellent cream for any sort of insect bites, rashes, etc is Paw Paw Ointment - it's fantastic stuff - you can get it in supermarkets or the chemist.
The aloe plants are the best. We have one and is excellent for so many reasons bites and burns being two. I didn't even know about thyme being a repellent,
those plug in repellants.
I bought one once and plugged it into the socket beside the bed. Although the covers werent actually over it it must have heated up in the semi enclosed area. It actually melted and had a burning smell. I got a shock as you can imagine and have never used them again.
Personally we have huntsmen spiders and daddy long legs living in our house and they do a great job as we are not bothered with mossies at all *grin*
How about a mossie net- our DD had a lovely white one covered in a silver star print. I got it at Spotlight and it wasnt expensive- it has a big hoop which is hung from the ceiling- then the net spreads around the bed. She doesnt use it now as it is not cool for a teenager *grin*
For those bites that are red and itchy we have found Eurax cream for itches very effective.
wow definetly won't use them again thanks, and great idea i don't know why i didn't thibnk of it before, i'm doing her room up at the moment all princess, so that will even look good and serve a purpose as well. thanks again!!!
Hi,
Check your cataloges one of the department stores had the princess range in their catalog and there was a gorgeous mosquito net in it......
Gee not cool for a teenager hey...shows how different teenagers are once again....We brought one for Megan about 3 years ago but because of the way our ceiling is we couldn't put it up but after visiting friends they had a wall shelf and the net was attatched on one of the supports on the shelf so we finally put Megan's up that way and she came home from school about 4 months ago and absolutely loved it...it is her own private space when the curtains are around...even though they are lace......Shes 15....

I have heard for many years that the product "Skin So Soft" from the cosmetic company Avon is a must to ward off mosquitoes ... comes in bath wash, skin oils, talc, etc ... I have heard that our big strong soldier boys use it when out in the field ...
Thanks so much, i have someone down the street who is avon rep, will give it a shot, must be good if the soldier boys use it.... might give the bath wash a go thanks so much!!!
Hi,
Sorry but maybe it is jsut me but i found it was a mossie attractant than a repellant.....I got more bites after I put the skin so soft mossie repellant on......I use a lot of avon products but in my opinion I wouldn't buy it again.
Luv Deb
great advice, i also used aloe vera gel for bites, its also great for rashes and eczema/skin rashes as well. If worse comes to worse, you can actually get mosquito repellant for infants. i had some for kobe, but cant remember the name. i got it from a chemist from memory. ( it was over a year ago)
My son is like that too. We really have to be careful because he comes up with huge red welts. Any kind of incense is a is a mosiquito repellent. You can also get a pyrethium plant and either keep it near her window or inside her room. Aloe is excellent to relieve the itch as well as cooling the redness, as well as teatree oil(teatree is also a repellent so maybe you can put a few drops in her bath) But I have found that the best thing was getting TROPICAL STRENGTH RID, and rolling the stuff all over my son's clothes. It may also pay to get a mosquito net for over the bed. We haven't had to resort to that yet, as he doesn't often get bitten when he is in bed.
Hi I had the same problem with my first daughter. Try rubbing Aloe-Vera Gel or Bepanthen cream on the bites to stop the itch.
Also I buy Mosquito Coils at the hardware store and light them throughout the house. They don't smell and work brilliantly at keeping the mozzies away.
