Weaning

Okay, I know I did this before but it seems to be completely beyond me. How do you wean a baby? Jess is 15 mos old and I'm more than ready to wean her but she is very resistant. And to compound matters, somehow we fell into the trap of nursing to fall asleep. I know better than all this, and yet, it has happened anyway. Can anyone help?

Weaning
Hi, I just started to wean my 11 month old two days ago.  Although she does go off to sleep without a feed.   As for the weaning part i am weaning my daughter straight onto a cup as i didn't really want to have to wean her off of a bottle in a couple of months any way.  i have started to cut out one of her feeds, the same one everyday, instead i give her some toddler formula in a sipper cup.  The first coulple of days she was unsure what was going on but now she dosen't miss it at all.  I have decided to do this for nearly two weeks then i am going to cut out another feed and replace it with the spipper cup with the toddlers milk.  I will continue to do this until she is fully weaned.  and hopfully as i have done it slowly my boobs wont hurt to much when they dry out as i wont be producing that much milk then.  Good luck with it.  Just remember to give your daughter lots of support as this is new for her, and to be consistant, once you start try not to stop if it seems to hard as it will make it harder next time.  As for the sleeping when i stopped my daughter to stopp sleeping with a feed i started a new rouutine for her so now every time i put her to bed i read her a story she then knows it is time for a nap.  thas was harder then the weaning. so good luck.

It is hard to imagine it sometimes but children really are so adaptable - where you lead, she will follow.

I too breastfed til my boy was 2 and I found it a great experience.

He got very ill (gastro in hospital) and I used this time as the catalyst as he wasn't allowed milk anyway.

I think you will know when the time is right - she might skip several feeds then you can just keep going.

Otherwise you decide when you're ready. You'll have a few days of hell probably but it won't go on for more than a week.

My son was very happy to have a substitute bottle after a week or so (although I'm sure many Mums would say a bottle is a no-no at this age).

Whenever and however you do it make sure you do it for the right reasons (ie. what suits you) and not because of pressure from others.

yep, i know what you meen, i done the same thing!! my eldest daughter was breastfeed till she was 2 and my 2nd daughter till 11 months (due to pregnancy) and I'm feeding the little one. I'm a very soft mum, and how i weened them was to lie down with them until they go to sleep, i cuddled them and rubbed there little backs!!  some people tell my that they get too many cuddles, and they are spoilt but i like to call it well loved!! the first few days they got sad, but it gets better. i always drop one sleepy feed at a time, like the morning nap one for example. good luck and it will be easier than you think... true story!!

You can never give your children too many cuddles
