Fussy kids at xmas

Hi there, this year xmas will be held at our house with all the family coming over. My mum has 2 young children (7 & 5) who will not eat anything but junk food. I have a 7 yo who doesn't eat this kind of food so we only stock healthy stuff in our house. My question is do I go out and buy the chips and lollies and chocolate they eat or not. I really don't want to but I know a big fuss will be made if I don't. Any advice will be helpful.

i would cook up all the normal stuff for chrismas, and if they dont eat it then tuff luck, they go with out. its your house you cook for xmas what you want to cook, do it for yourself and your children, dont try to impress everyone else, because by the end of the day you end up having a terrible christmas yourself, and not ending up enjoying it. ask your mum if she can go halves in the food and you buy for your kids and she buy for her kids. or on the day if they ask for somethink else just say sorry i forgot to buy that kinda food,lol....i hope you find your answer. good luck merry xmas xoxoxox

Have you spoken to your Mother about this? If not then I would suggest that you do so and let her know kindly that you will not have the kind of treats in your home that the kids are used to as you do not feel it is healthy for your child!  Do the children eat junk food because that is all they are offered, perhaps if they see others enjoying different types of food fare, and know that there is no junk to be had, then they may indulge in some of your meal! In the meantime you should let your Mom know that junk food will not be acceptable for this occassion. You may also want to keep any desserts out of sight until the end of th meal. Just remember that this is your home, and your rules should be respected by all who enter! good luck and Merry Christmas

How sad for your siblings to be brought up with such a poor diet, like another poster stated, it is a death sentence for them.

As for Christmas Day, personally I would just stick with serving what you already have planned, if the kids refuse to eat it well then they have two choices, either eat what you serve up or go hungry.

Hi there, l have read other peoples comments after thinking what l would do myself and l did not change my mind.  I agree that eating like that is not healthy for the children however that is not the subject of your concern here. lf you are like me you go out and buy things for xmas that you do not normally have in your house, eg bonbons. For xmas day l make up platters of fruits, cheeses, crackers, dips, cocktail onions, kabana, etc (including some items l don't like myself and some my children don't like) for munchies later in the day while we all sit around and chatting, but l see this as catering for all my guests tastes. I would not go out and spend a fortune on these items or go overboard in quantities of these items however l would make an attempt to have something on the table for everyone. I say Serve up christmas dinner and if your younger siblings don't want any then that is their choice, they will have to go hungry until you decide to put out any munchies later. I don't see  what harm it would do to buy one packet of chips or a small bag of mixed lollies for the day to put out later just to keep the peace and tell them that is all there is, when they are gone then that is it. Your child does not have to eat them if he/she does not want to and you are not dictating that if your child doesn't eat this kind of food then noone else can have it either. Whatever your final decision is, I wish you have a Merry Christmas with a non-eventful christmas day and everything works out well.  Regards

My kids eat 'junk food' VERY rarely and its usually a treat. ONE peice of chocolate every week or so. I say to you DONT serve the crap if you dont want too. Who knows, maybe your mum will see your angel eating all the great, tasty, healthy food and wake up! Good on you for not having that stuff in your house
When my son picked a bowl of steamed broccoli over a mars bar I was proud!

Hi Bella

I have to be honest your mum is killing her kids.  It doesn't matter how skinny you are your cholesterol can still be right through the roof and that is a recipe for disaster.  I should know I was 47kg single and living off junk food at the age of 21 my cholesterol was 7.2 which is heart attack level.  I tell you what, I changed my diet and lifestyle right there and then and within 2 months mine had dropped down to 4 a nice healthy level.  I guess what I am trying to say is don't let your mother or her kids (your siblings i guess) dictate to you how you eat and what you supply on christmas day.

If she wants to create their health problems you don't have to encourage it .... it's your house and your meal please yourself not everyone else.

Best of all have a merry christmas and a happy new year.

PS has your mum ever tried giving them healthy stuff with natural sweetners like honey etc to see if they even like that sort of stuff?

hi jillo my mum doesn't really care what the kids eat as long as their happy. they are really spoilt they get whatever they want whenever they want. we've tried talking to her about her kids health problems and we've sat down with the kids when mums not around and explained what could happen to them. they will not eat anything at our house not even our bread coz its not white bread instead they would rather go hungry. then when they get home they pig out on all their crap and tell mum we don't feed them. i babysit them all day most days so i feel like i may be starving them but i can't bring myself to give them their normal foods.

Hi Bella

Thats really sad for you and them and for you.  In all honesty though I seriously doubt that them not eating at your house is starving them I'm sure all the crap that is in their bodies would sustain them no problems!!!!!!!

I know this is probably really harsh and I would hate to have to be in your situation, but have you tried telling your mum that you can't watch the kids anymore as they refuse to eat at your house.    It's a tough line to take, but maybe if you take away from her your kindness and generosity of having them for her she might actually take a harder line with them in order for her to be able to have your help.  In saying that though it's easy for us to be on this site of the situation but much harder to be where you are.

I so hope that your christmas is not marred by this situation and that it all works out for you and your family in the end.

I'm sorry, but I have to say your mother needs a swift kick up the butt for allowing her children to only eat junk. It's fine for kids to have some of that stuff, but not just junk alone! It's so unhealthy for them!

Stick to your guns - if you don't want junk food in your house, then don't do it. If they cannot eat what you provide, tough! If they make a fuss, remind them that it is your house, you simply do not buy that sort of food, and they need to respect that.

Hi Bella, could you ask your Mum sweetly to comply with your wishes or perhaps compromise,Perhaps they could have personal junk stockings etc and then you could have interesting healthy treats,I liked the idea of the fruit kebabs etc I really don't think you  should wear the expense of food you don't normally have in your home. You could explain to Grandma that it is cruel to subject your children to the food their bodies aren't used to.sort of play up the bad points and try and touch her grandmaternal instincts.good luck regards Merle

If your mum knows that her grandchildren dont have junkfood, then she should respect your wishes, but then being their grandma, they ment to spoil their grandkids, and would it be that bad if they only have it on xmas day.As i look at xmas only comes once a year, and i think we can sometimes allow ourselves to indulge in certain things that we may not have during the year. What i like to know is what exacly does your siblilngs actually eat in the junk food area.

mum's kids eat terrible food. we have been over for breakfast and her kids are having chocolate! we go over at night and they still eating lollies at 10pm. the healthiest things they eat are promite sandwiches and potato chips. they have mcdonalds at least 3-4 times a week. they don't eat at my house coz i won't let them have crappy foods. the junkiest thing we have here are rice crackers lol. they really are shocking and the worst thing is they are skinny as rakes.

hi ive just read your answer from my advise, and now i tottally understand where you are coming from.Ive being in situation with my sister, and it wouldnt matter what you say or do if those kids are used to eating junkfood, they may not change their eating habits for anyone, which is really sad. Why does your mum only feed them junk food, and did you have the same upbringing.

hi cazza,

mum fed them junk as babies now they won't eat anything else and she'd rather have them quiet, we don't really see eye to eye when it comes to our children lol. when we were kids we weren't allowed sweets coz mum and dad were tightas### back them. the gap is about 18 yrs between me and the younger ones so mum and dad are trying to make up for all the mistakes they made with us. instead they are just making it worse.

We don't have much junk in our house, and people coming to your home shouldn't expect you to stock up on rubbish food to suit their unhealthy choices. Just politely let them know that junk food is BYO! I've also found though that kids who supposedly live on junk will still try most things if they're hungry enough. Fruit kebabs (assortment of fruit pieces on skewers) and water crackers with healthy dips usually go down a treat!

Hi, I would go ahead and eat what you and your family normally eat at christmas, after all it's not about junk food, what happened to a little respect, love and just being together as a family should be. I would not be ashamed and if I was your mum I would respect that I am in your house and manners well where have they gone, surely one day this child can be shown that when we visit other people's houses we are polite and be thankful for what we have each other and being together, junk food should not come into this you are family and it is a day to be together and be happy, we are not here for ever so cherrish each other this is trivial explain to your mum and I am sure she will abide your wishes neet 241

Don't tell your mum that there won't be any junk food and stick to your guns and only serve the healthy food you usually have.

Then if your siblings don't eat what is given to them Your mother will see that you do feed them and they just choose not to eat what they are given!

Good luck and have a very Merry Christmas!!

Don't change your rules for visitors, if they want junk, let them buy it them selves, a healthy change will probally do them good buy the sounds of things too,you kids will probably set a good example for them too. It really annoys me people who only give there children crap too eat, by doing so i believe they are giving them a death sentence or major health problems. have a great christmas and good luck.
