Birthday party

Do you think it is rude to have a birthday party and only serve cake and ice cream?  My sons birthday party is going to be on New Years Eve, since everyone comes to my house to play cards that day.  Yet we are on limited funds.  I think it is a little rude, my hubby thinks it is fine.  I am thinking on making a Nacho Bar.  Whoever gets the most advice here wins.  Me and the nacho bar, (cheese, chips, taco seasoned meat, tomatoes, refried beans, sour cream and olives) or Hubby just cake and ice cream. Cole is 3 now, and we are inviting all of our friends and family, and I want everyone to have a good time for his birthday party BEFORE the new years party.

you could also make fairy bread thats nice and cheep to make and cocktail hotdogs .. kids wont eat that much anyway they are too busy playing , just let the parents know thats its only a small thing have it after lunch so that way the kids have already had their lunch before getting there

I agree with the others... Ask everyone to bring a dish, it will take the pressure off you, and I am sure they would be only too happy to do so.  All you need to do is worry about the cake for your son - I am sure that at 3 it will be a big exciting deal for him.

Everyone has either been in, or will be in the same situation at sometime.  You are providing the venue, you will be surrounded by your family and friends - enjoy it, don't stress about it.

Have a wonderful New Years, and Happy Birthday to your little man!

if limited in fund thats ok so ask people to bring something with them and u will find people dont mind.  they are coming for your company and for ur sons birthday.

Cake and ice cream is fine and everyones happy faces. Dont feel that u need to do extra becuase you can do what you can afford. This day and age its hard to provide everything.

I agree.  If you're on limited funds, then there's nothing wrong with asking your family and friends each to bring a plate or a bottle of drink.  Plus it means that way they'll have at least one thing they want to eat!

i dont think youre doing anything wrong here, its not your fault you have limited funds, and your family and friends should accept that. perhaps you could ask them to bring a plate of food or a bottle of drink to share around? ive done this before and people are usually only to happy to be able to help  out.

If you are on limitted funds why not forgo the party?  Just do something with your kids and husband?  You kid is too young anyhow and wont remember the party.  If you have to spend a bunch of money to feed everyone will it really be equal to the presents he may recive?  Probabaly not.  I say no party, just have cake with your kids and husband.  I guess my vote is for neither you or your husband.

I don't think its rude at all...frankly, I think some of these new fancy dandy b-day parties people throw for their kids are a little silly.  When I was little, ( my b-day is two days before christmas) that is all my mum did and I was thrilled as punch.    My sons b-day is on the 30th...he's having cake and icecream... and thats all.  The party is after lunch so I don't feel the need to make hot dogs or anything.  Plan a few games, sit down have the cake and icecream, open gifts..and off they go.  Perfect party ...Have fun!!

it's not rude to only have cake and ice cream.  at least not where i come from.  it *might* feel strange to have friends over to play cards and not offer some snack--especially if the invite didn't ask everyone to bring something to share.  i say, give the kids cake and ice cream, then offer the nacho bar as something to snack on while everyone is playing cards later.  slice/dice my vote anyway you want!  :)

hey, if all your friends and family are coming and you are on limited funds, why not ask each couple or family if they would mind bringing a dish. i always do this and no one minds because it doesn't cost them much or you much so it is a win win situation. hope this helps you out a bit

Britt xx

I would think cake and ice cream sounds just fine. Expecially if you are on limited funds. New Year's is all about spending it the year together with people you love, why care about food?? (well special foods I mean)

Plus.. Kids love cake and ice cream!! That's a bonus!

I think just cake and ice-cream is fine,is every-one there for both ?(New years day and Birthday)If so why not get every-one to bring a plate......so you provide cake and ice-cream and every-one else brings a plate it is a win win result.I personally always take a plate to whatever get-together we attend.People generally don't mind bringing a plate if asked.I hope Cole has a great Birthday and you all have a safe and prosperous newyear regards Merle

hi im sorry i would have to agree with your husband on this one, as i have a 3 year old and she loves icecream and cake. This Nacho  bar was it for the adults or children, as im confused as i dont know many kids that would like that  type of food if the Nacho bar was for the adults only, then i would use the money that u wer going to spend on that, and buy some nibbles for your sons party, and ask the adults if they wouldnt mind bringing something to nibble on for the card game. I hope your little man has agood birthday, and best wishes for the new year.

Hi,

I know what its like to be on a budget and it can be really tough.  I guess it all depends on how many kids are going to be there.  If there are only a few then i think the nacho's would be fine because adults would much prefer that.  But if there are going to be a few kids there then i think you need to cater for them more than anything, especially since it is a kids bday.  We couldnt afford a party for my sons 3rd birthday a few weeks ago, so my mum decided she would have a small one and just invited the cousins.  She had cake, and she made green jellies and put a choc frog in them, and just made some yummi fairy bread, oh and a bag of lollies.  You dont need alot of money to have fun.   Maybe by just doing those few things, you might still be able to afford the nacho bar for your adult friends and family

Hope i helped a little, enjoy your party and New Years Eve

We don't do big birthday parties every year we also have limited funds so we pick special birthdays to have parties on examples- 1,5,10,13,16,18,21. It means that we can put money away for parties and as all the kids don't become that age all in the same year it works out well for us. We do have a cake and pressies every year just not a heap of party food.

it really depends on what age group are coming to the party because do small children really like nachos? but then again older people enjoy nachos but they also would enjoy cale and ice cream i think going with cake and ice cream is fine as no-one will turn down a good slice of cake where as you dont always know if people are gonna like nachos...ok ive just written a confusing comment but i know what im on about...hope you do

xx miss emzi xx
