ASTHMA IN KIDS

Hi.  I have a 8yo son, 2yo son and 8mo daughter.  My 8yo never had asthma, and my two youngest have it.  My 2yo has had it since 10mo and has been ongoing since then approximately every 2-3 weeks.  And my 8mo has had it since about 4mo, every 2-3weeks. They do not have attacks as such, but they start with a runny nose, which progresses into wheezing and alot of phlegm on their chest.  We use ventolin machine on both of them which seems to releive them for a few hours till their next dose.  We have spent that much money on medicines, doctors visit and after hours private doctor visits.  We live in a nice regional town, and it has been very dry the past year and this doesn't seem to help.  But it has been raining on and off the past few weeks and settled the dust, and they haven't had any asthma problems since the rain began.

I don't really have advice, but i would love to talk to other parents on here or msn messenger ( elvismum@hotmail.com) regarding this serious problem in kids. Any new age ideas for helping prevent the asthma, or other ideas would be sooo useful.  I am looking for anything that can help keep my kiddies healthy and happy and away from the ventolin machine.

Has anyone tried things like chiropractor, natropaths etc.. any ideas would be wonderful..

My son was suffering from the same symtoms. I spoke to my chemist who advised vitamin A tablets. Magic miracle witch doctor medicine. Was off the puffer within a month, and doctor was totally flamboozled!

That is just like all of my children. Especially my 11yo daughter. She starts of with a nose running like a river, itchy eyes and she wheezes. The house hardly has any carpets except for the hallyway, stairs, my bedroom and my sons' bedrooms. I hoover 3-4 times a day, mop the floor 3-4 times a day and basically just on the go all day! She has had really bad astmah since the beginning of september. Towards the begginning of may, we had a new pet to the house, a pup named Alfie. At first me and my hubbie thought it was the dog that was setting her off because she is allergic to most dogs' fur. Anyway, we went to the doctors and the doc put her on some steroids to clear her flem. This worked whilst she was on them, but it was only a weeks prescription so we obviously ran out. I have left it for a bit but she has been put back on to the brown inhaler. please reply .

I would like to first ask you if you have any animals in your home? Pet dander is one of the things that can set off an asthma attack.

Hi, you may have pinpointed the problem when you said that your children haven't had any problems since the rain started.  I moved to a country town when I was pregnant with my second child and until then my older son had never had any asthma problems.  Also I was an asthmatic but hadn't had any problems for 5 years.  Then I moved to this rural town.  My youngest son was born and was diagnosed within a few months as asthmatic - I had to have him on the ventolator for months.  At the same time my oldest son (who was 2 years old) was diagnosed with asthma and I started having problems again.  I had allegy tests done and it was discovered that my oldest son and I was allergic to dust (I didn't get my youngest son tested as he was too little) - obviously this is what triggered my youngest as well.  I ripped up the carpet in their bedroom and this helped heaps as carpet is a great dust storage area.  From then on I tried to keep as much dust as possible out of the house and this too helped (of course you can't keep it all out).  I moved here to QLD when my sons where 7 and 5 years of age (not because of the asthma) but amazingly within 6 months we were all practically asthma free except when my youngest son (who was always worse then myself and oldest son) is too physical and then he gets wheezey.  I tell you all this because your story is so similar - none of us got attacks as such - but started as runny noses, wheeziness and lots of phlegm.  Maybe you need to talk to your doctor and find out if it is a dust allegy and what you could do to help if it is.  Good luck.
