tonsillectomy and adenoids

We went to see a doctor today for my son and he told us that my son would benefit if he has his tonsils and adenoids taken out. I know it is for the best and I am not in panic (yet ). My question is how long does it take (from personal experience or from someone you know) to have the operation in public hospital. as the doctor told me it is 3 weeks for pivate but all in all it is $1600 out of pocket at least money that we just cant pay. He told me it was much longer in public. Can I have him on more than 1 list??? and what to expect post op as he is almost 4 now (cant speek much yet)

Oh great, Im off to the ENT specialist tomorrow with my 4yr old, I can pretty well guarantee they are going to tell me the same thing, if this is the case I will be saving up for private, cancelled my insurance 6 mths ago grrrr but I certainly won't be waiting for public

Blimy 5yrs on a waiting list in England it is 5months to have both removed on the n.h.s it can be less depending on the severity. The op takes about 30 mins which i have watched lots of times as i work in a E.nt Clinic,if the child lives within 10mins of the hospital can go home the same day as long as they can take fluids.,there is normally no problems.

Hi
Get the money together for private......
My daughter was priority 1 and it took 5 years from the time she went on it til she got them out...a lot of antibiotics and a lot of pain that should have been spared
Talk to the public hospital and see what their wait time is but i think you will find that even the first consultation visit will take at least 2 months away.....
Well thats in Brisbane anyway.......
My son needs a sleep study done urgently and the quickest we can get him in is 6-9 months......thats urgent in their eyes.......
I wish there was somewhere we could go private with him but unfortunately the Mater is the quickest and there is no private facility for children that need the sleep study done
After all it is only money .....lol  what else you want to do with it
Just my thoughts
Luv Deb

we are going to see the sleep specialist in march they called me them self I had no idea that referal was sent to them. I know that money is only money but when it comes to a child that might need extra help all his life like he might than if I dont save up I am stuffed.

my son had his tonsils and adnoids out last year ... he was also 4 at the time and not talking much... the biggest question is does your son suffer sleep apnea.. appear to stop breathing or go quiet when sleeping this will cut the waiting down dramatically ... we were on the waiting list for around 4 months but I didnt think he had sleep apnea but wasnt sure.. This was at the royal childrens hospital in Brisbane .. The doctors were all terrific.. Also if u are able to come in at short notice helps as well so if they have a cancellation u may get in quicker...

As for the preop we were only in overnight.. as soon as he was able to eat and drink that was it .. Andy had a problem with sleeping though after his op he slept for nearly 24 hrs straight but when he did wake he ate and drank n that was it.. So long as there are no complications they send them home the next day .. then was jsut pain killers for a week and was fine after that ...

Hope this helped

Thanks madmum03 well his problem started when we came in australi he was 7m his nose was runny and would fall asleep at night wake up 30 min later and throw up (every night) on top of that he was snoring. Doctor told us he had asthma and to give him 16 puffs every 2hours (I didnt) stoped the milk at night and it all stoped than other doctors told us he does not have asthma. his nose continued to run till he was around 3 but his snoring hasnt it is a bit better mostly its really havy breathing and yes somethimes it does look like he has apnea (we are going to see the specialist on the 6th of march).

Blimey, thats expensive.  All I can tell you is that 2 of the kids I used to care for had theres removed in the past few years and because we live in a rural area they had to go to Perth and stay in Perth for up to 3 weeks post op. to be sure there was no post op complications ie. bleeding etc.

I had mine out 11 years ago in a small vic country hospital where I was living & a little boy (about 5 or 6) was there having the same thing & I was told that because I was an adult I would recover slower & have a much harder time of it (I was 24).  In fact the opposite was true in this case.  I was out of bed within hours of waking up and helping the poor little guy vomit into a kidney dish and calling for the nurse etc & I felt fine, just had a scratchy voice, I was there 2 days tops go to woe & never had a backwards glance, he was there for over a week I found out.  My theory is that I coped better because I understood why I was there, & what was happening to my body, I understood the complications & I had the option of mind over matter.  A child has non of those things and to make matters less in their favour they are away from everything familiar especially their parents.  Go public & save yourself the money.  I was a CRONIC tonsilitus sufferer all my life until I had them out then, they gave me blood poisoning twice & I was constantly on anti-biotics for it, I got it ALL the time.  I am not recommending you wait until he is an adult, I wish I'd had mine out earlier but Mum was told it was not the fashionable thing to do (thats what the GP told her) anymore, she'll grow out of it.

Be with him every waking moment whilst he's in hospital, keep his spirits up, take in things for him to do, lavish him with love and attention & I am sure he will have a quick and easy recovery.  A few weeks or even months on a waiting list is not a matter of life nor death in this case but it might be the difference of being able to afford to buy him some treats during and after his recovery or to taking time off work or what ever.

Thats what I would do. xo

I had mine takan out when I was about his age (not sure how old) I remember only few things but nothing to do with pain (like when they told me the doctor was going to take few pictures of me and then when it was finished I wanted to see the pictures ) they also showed me what they took out. I was told he would only stay for 1 night, but I cant take that chance in private hospital as it is $900 for a night (mind you the op is only $530 or $334.05 after rebate). I dont work so I dont care how long it takes as long as he is not in too much pain. I had an operation 7m ago (gall blader) and I went to hospital att 11am one day I was out the next day at 9:30 am (not that I was well enough but that is how it it is now).

I am all for the op , but I want to be ready for it (i dont always trust doctors when they say its not a big deal) so peronal experience would help me expecialy If I get him home so soon after operation without strong painkillers (and when the pain kicks in)

by the way I am in south eastern surburbs of melbourne.

generally with children the waiting list is shorter. My son needs an op on his tear duct and privately it was going to cost $1500 (that is if he didn't need to stay overnight). I transfered to the public system and 1 week later they have an appointment for me already.

it looks like you yave much better system in QLD I dont think they care if is a child or not in victoria I am still on the waiting list to see a ear nose and throat specialist in royal children hospital (since august and it is a 10 min check up like he had yesterday). everywhere we go we have to wait ages even if we go private.
