car seats

Due to our family going through a very hard time after my partner had a car accident and the fact that if it hadn't been for an airbag he would have died I am VERY much for this law. However a booseter seat is not enough. I recently saw a story on a mother who lost her son becasue the seat belt failed. His sister was in an identical seat and lived becasue the seatbelt worked. They were both in booster seats with the adult seat belt around them.

I don't care how much it costs my kids will be going onto 5 point harness booster seats when they no longer fit in their normal ones, and they will stay there until they can't fit in those. Since our family is small in stature that could be untilthe end of primary school. theonse I'm looking at are things like MAxi Rider  which are about $600 each. We are a low income family and I will save my butt off to get them one.

The current QLD law is that after 12mths a child can travel in an adult seatbelt. ARE THEY CRAZY. These are our future we are talking about. Money is not an option when it comes to the safety of kids and any parent who doesn't have there kids in the correct car seat should be done for negligence. And the excuse my friend uses that her 4yr old wouldn't sit in one once he turned 18mths just doesn't cut it. They're kids and I don't care if mine chuck the most massive wobbly alive they WILL sit in that seat!

Sorry for the rant this is a subject I am very passionate about.

nope your totally right to rant. People just dont take it serious enough! We get rear ended at 60km/h last year. The boys were in proper baby seats and they came off with nothing. I however in an adult seat belt got sever neck muscle injuries and its still not all right to this day (this was about 10 months ago)
Car seats are so important. Mum told me of a car accident they had when I was 4 and my sisters were 3 and 2. My sister who was 3 slipped straight under the lap belt and ended up on the floor. My youngest sister however was in a car seat and was fine.

If they think our kids will be safer, and it saves more lives then I have no problem with it, a funeral costs more then a car seat, I know what I would prefer paying for.

Personally I think the booster thing is a fantastic idea and should be enforced and you should recieve fines if you dont follow it.

I read an article a few months back that scared the bejeezus outta me. They showed a crash dummy at 40 km/h hitting a wall.

They showed the child the size of a 5 year old have 'injuries' so bad that IRL they would have died.

THey also showed the same set up with a child in a booster seat with minimal injuries.
It had been proven that normal car seats are not suitable and not enough protection for a child the adverage hight and weight of a 8 year old.

Now having said all that I douibt very much whether they will be $500. I brought my sons seat for $45 at Big W and it would easily fit a child up to 6 or 7 in it. It has a little clip on the side that you adjust to their shoulder height and the seatbelt goes throught it and it holds it just above their shoulders stoping it from slipping. It has a great design at the waist too holding the lap belt at the right height and it cant go anywhere.

All this for $40! You cant put a price on your child.

Also I think harnesses should be looked into. Much more affordable, much more compact. Im sure they could be adjusted to fit an older child. They are fantastic!

All in all YES i think its a great idea.

My daughter is 17mths and was in her car seat facing backwards until she was 12months, even though everyone told me I was being stupid. BUT the instructions on the seat say to turn them around between 8 - 9kgs or 70cm. And I got real advice from a child's occupational therapist who said it was safer for my baby to be backwards until she was the right weight or height.

When it comes time for Lacey to be in a booster seat I will follow the recommendations for the safest option. I don't think a law for 10 yr olds is realistic as all 10 yr olds are different sizes, but something based on height and weight should be introduced.

Child safety laws aren't needed for parents that always have their childs best interest at heart (all the people on Minti obviously care about their children) but people who don't take every precaution where their children are concerned should be held accountable.

When I was a baby I rode in the car in a flimsy basket or on my mother's lap. If a mother did that today we'd all be outraged. With time we learn new things. Todays new thing is that most children up to 10 are safer in booster seats.

Hi there, I've just read the article concerning booster seats and I gotta say I'm in two minds about it. On the one hand I agree that there is nothing more important than our childrens safety but on the other hand it doesn't seem very realistic. I for one could never afford a new car because that's what I'd need, a 4WD or van. Secondly I think if this law does come out then the automotive companies should take some responsibility in this and bring out cars with inbuilt boosters (I know that in some volvo's this is already the case) or they could make all cars with adjustable seatbelt slides that shorten the seatbelt at the side where they're attached to the car(no idea what thats called lol). Anyway, thats just my opinion.

Firstly, while i wouldnt put a price on my children we have to be realistic about it. I for one could not afford a booster seat if it is going to be so outrageously priced.. not because i dont CARE, but simply because the harsh reality is i cant afford it. Secondly, i  think that they need to give a whole lot more thought to the supposed law. My daughter is 10 in april, and she is only half a head shorter than i am, a full grown adult. Would she be required to travel in one of these seats? i dont think that the idea of mandatory booster seats is necessarily a bad idea, i just think that 10 is going slightly overboard.

Booster seats should be mandatory until the child fits properly into an adult seat belt. A minor accident can be lethal for a toddler because the lap sash or across the shoulder harness doesn't sit right.  Their small body is bruised and battered causing life threatening injuries. I am crying at the moment after reading a story of such a tragic incident. Please don't be so concerned about the price. Would you put a price on your babies? Sorry to sound rude, I'm very moved by this Hayley
