naps!!!

Lately my little one (4 months) has only been taking 30 minute naps. I know she is tired when I put her to bed b/c she is yawning, rubbing her eyes, and cranky. We go through our usual before naptime "routine", diaper change, swaddle, rock a bit, and then to bed. She went right to sleep both times today, only to wake up crying 30 minutes later. What's the deal.

My daughter at that age only had 3 naps a day, each one only 10 minutes in length.  No naps past her fist birthday unless we were travelling long distances, then she would go to sleep in the car.  It is ok if she isn't too cranky for the rest of the time.  My daughter always woke up happy and wasn't grumpy so i decided she didn't need the sleep. Everyone is different, reading books on how much sleep an infant needs is very general.  It is said that adults need 8 hours of unbroken sleep a night, yet some need 11 hours to be human, some need only 4 or 5 hours, so everyone is different.  I would ride it out, if she's happy leave her be, if she's cranky try putting her to bed again.

naps!!!
Hi. Don't get fooled into believing that this is normal. My daughter was a cat napper.  She had two twenty minute cat naps per day.  Forty minutes sleep (and no deep sleep at all) is not sufficient sleep for a baby of 4 months.  However, I didn't know this.  I just assumed that a baby sets its own rhythem.  Your baby is exhausted but she doesn't know how to settle herself to sleep again after a sleep cycle (which is 20-30 minutes at that age).  So she wakes up and it's difficult to get her down again.  This is the time you have to train her to self-settle and there are many techniques you can employ to do that (not control crying which shouldn't be practised before 6 months of age if you choose do to it at all).  I didn't know about this and I just left the situation going until my daughter was 8 months old.  By that stage I was so exhausted looking after a baby who had only two catnaps a day (while still getting up at night to feed her) that I just collapsed in a heap.  We then hired a sleep consultant and lo and behold, she started having longer naps throughout the day - two two hour naps to be exact! Most of the consultants advocate routines and then have various methods of settling a baby without having to rock it to sleep or do something that requires your presence.  Soon enough the baby learns to put itself to sleep and your catnapping problem will be over.  Hope this helps.

I always have to wonder why babies 'must' self-settle and why we need to 'train' them to do what we want them to do when they are capable of saying when they're tired or hungry and it's up to us to know what they mean instead of forcing them into doing something we want them to do. It goes against nature and a mother's instinct to leave a baby cry yet it's more accepted than spending time with the baby. I don't get it. Nothing wrong with my daughter and she only had 10 minute sleeps and gave them up entirely by her first birthday.

naps!!!
Hi Georgia is now nearly 7 months old and since she was 4 months she has had 2o to 30 minute cat naps all day. She sleeps 20 to 30 and then wakes really happy for about an hour to 2 hours and then back down for another cat nap she does this all day long. Then since 5 and 1/2 months old she has been sleeping 11 to 12 hours a night as well as her all day naps. Dont stress they tell me that they must need it and she will grow out of it. Tahlia who is now 11 never did this so all new to me. Good luck and hope it changes for you soon.
