Dummy withdrawals

Santa took my 3 year olds dummy on Sunday night but mistakingly left a couple of odd ones he could not find. Last night her sister found one as she was about to go to sleep, i told her santa asked me to send it to him , but the screaming for it got pretty intense, took her mind off it and went and got an icecream from macdonalds. Today at lunch she found one in the kids dining room, i took it from her and said wow another one to send to Santa, this one did not upset her as i assume she was not tired. All this said though she has been extreamly suky and clinging to me and a lot of little things have been upseting her over the last few days, i am begining to think they are dummy withdrawals, she has also started placing her finger or thumb in her mouth as she goes to sleep. Will this last long or will she get over it soon?

yeh, we've just gone through this with our 2yo son.

we decided enough was enough, and promised him a balloon at the end of the week, if he made it all week without one. sure enough, he made it! he got his balloon, shaped like an (american) football, with his favourite teams logo on it: the florida gators :-)

he's so proud of this balloon, and shows it off all the time. even though it's semi-deflated (it's lasted 2 1/2 weeks so far), it's still living in his room as a reminder of what he can do now he's a Big Boy.

occasionally it's still a little hard to get him down now, but the crying for Binky is over, he's forgotten it at last.

The reason my almost 3 year old has a dummy for bed... my mum said to me once "you can throw away a dummy, but you cant throw away a thumb"
He will be rid of it when hes ready and Im not about to take it and have him suck his thumb. That can cause all sorts of long term problems with teeth
Good luck and im sure she will forget about it soon

My 8 month old DS wouldnt take a dummy and started sucking his thumb at 6 months and still sucks it when he's either over tired or hungry, I figure he will stop doing it when he's ready, and like pp's have said every babe is different....good luck

I wouldn't be so sure about that. My mother-in-law told me my hubby used to suck his when he was little and his thumb was always raw red, I suppose it depends on how much they suck them!!!!!!

All little ones are different and react differently to different situations I agree with emmysmum and I would also add that kids are alot smarter than most people give them credit for. This could be a major loss in her little head and she may just need time to forget about it.

Have you perhaps tried looking in the $2 shops for a large novelty toy dummy....one that is too big for her to put into her mouth?
Or better still, have you tried explaining to your little girl as to why she no longer needs a dummy? I feel that whilst children are little, they shouldn't be left in the dark about things that are happening to them, like why there dummy has been taken off them!
Try explaining....you're a big girl now and big girls don't need dummies. Tell her that without a dummy she is much more beautiful!
