Is it harder to conceive a baby when you get older?

I don't consider my self old, but in January I will be turning 29, my husband and I have been trying to concieve for the last 3 months, which I think is a wee while, due to deciding to have babies and falling pregnant basically straight away, I haven't used any hormone forms of contraception and instead used an IUD.  I used this form before our last child and when I took it out, I fell pregnant straight away.  Am I thinking too much about this?  My husband has also changed from briefs to boxers because we heard this can help.  Is it true that age does matter?

You my dear have cut me to the quick! 29 older! I had my son when I was 41! Perhaps you are trying TO hard! Perhaps you and your husband should get checked out by your doctor just to make sure everything is working properly! And perhaps you should just learn to relax when you are together and not think of it as babymaking, but as making love and then perhaps from the lovemaking the seed of life with plant itself and grow and flourish!

Medically speaking, a woman's fertility starts to decline after age 35. Recent studies also show that men's fertility starts decling in the mid-30s and 40s too--kind of destroying the idea that men are fertile for ever and ever.

Infertility is defined as trying to conceive for a year without getting pregnant. So, three months isn't so  long--although I understand it feels that way to you.

That said, the biggest trend in birthrate in the last 10-12 years is women in their mid-30s to 40s having babies. Some naturally, some by in vitro or other means.

At 29 your age really isn't the issue.  They talk about being too old as the quality and number of eggs diminishes the closer you get to menopause.  You should be at least a decade or two off that yet!

3 months really isn't very long to try for a baby.  Sometimes it happens first go, sometimes it takes longer.  You usually don't have to worry unless you've been trying for a year and nothing's happened.

Perhaps you ovulate earlier or later in your cycle than other women do, so you just aren't catching the egg in time.  If you haven't already, it might be worth trying those ovulation tests to make sure you're getting things going at the right time.

And most of all (if you can!) relax.  The more you're relaxed about it, the easier it will be for it to happen.  Easier said than done, I know, but just try and enjoy the ride (no pun intended)!

Speaking from experience it was probably the IUD.  Each month your body prepares itself to conceive, you ovulate & your uterus builds a wall or a new layer or something like that, etc...  Anyway...the IUD's job is it keep the wall from rebuilding.  I could be wrong but this is what I remember the doctor telling me, the IUD keeps the uterine wall thin or nonexistent so that if sperm happens to pass through the cervix (which it shouldn't) a fertilized egg cannot implant itself.  I only had mine for 7 months (I had many complications!!) & it took me 4 months to conceive after it was removed.  All I am saying is don't get discouraged & give your uterine wall time to rebuild!!  Good luck.

Statistically speaking, it is harder to conceive a baby after you are 35 years old.  Other issues may be present that effect your ability to conceive, but usually age is not even considered as a factor until after you are 35.

Generally, yes......it is harder to fall pregnant as you get older, but there are also so many young people that have trouble concieving as well.  And there is nothing you can do about how old you are, so there is no use dwelling on thatl.

I was only 22 when we started trying.  It took us 18mths and I had to be artificially inseminated before I could fall pregnant.  I also have a friend who is 26 and she has been trying for 3 years and has been on IVF for the past 6 months and still can't fall pregnant.  But on the other hand, a lady that I used to work with was 41 when she accidentally fell pregnant!

So you can just never tell if it's going to be easy or hard for you to fall pregnant.  The main thing is to keep calm, happy and positive and accept any help that comes your way.

I really hope your dreams come true.  Good luck.

xx

they say when you get ionto your forties thats when it is harder to concieve, i don't think you have anything to worry about, my big sister was on the pill since she was 15 adn when she went off to try for a bub it took her 8 months before she fell pregnant adn she was only 22, they say after coming off any contraceptive it can take up to 18 months before you fall pregnant, good luck and try not to worry, hope this has helped Britt xx
