starting solids?

My baby boy is nearly six months old. He is still breast feeding and has been a great feeder and sleeper since newborn. Until about a week ago he was sleeping 7pm to 5am nearly every night but for the last 6 days has started waking from 3-4am, (will feed and eventually go back to sleep). I breast feed him just before i put him to bed every night even if it's just a top-up for his big sleep. Do you think this shorter sleeping time is a sign that he is hungry and needs more food?

Hi.

I am no expert, as I only have one child, so I will just pass on the advice given to us.

Our son was a great sleeper, keeping hours much like yours. We were advised by our HCP to introduce solids, even if only a little amount, when he started to wake up hungry through the night.

As he had been sleeping 10 hours a night since 4weeks old, the sudden change to waking for a midnight feed was a sure sign to us (under the guidance of doctors) that he was ready for "solids" like farex.

Luckily he was also physically ready by this time (holding his head steady, opening his mouth and making chomping and swallowing motions, mimicing us eating, intently watching us eat, staring at our food).

Hope this helps.

This could be a growth spurt. Babies usually go through growth spurts at 3, 6, 9 weeks and at 3, 6, 9 months.

As far as starting solids, it is up to your when you want to start solids. 6 months is a good age to start. Just start with basic cereals and see how he likes it. If he is ready, he will probably gobble it up. If not, then try again another day.

If you don't want to start your son on solids yet, this is also up to you. There is nothing wrong (in fact, some experts suggest delaying solids) with not starting right away.

Hi
It is actually ok to start feeding your baby when you choose.....or when advised by your professional health care team  The reason I say this is we had no choice but to start Jalan at 3 weeks of age.......I was very frightened as I had heard all the information as well.....the reason you need guidance from your health care team is so you don't give them food that they cannot digest.
Jalan was started on a small bit if baby apples as she has to take her creon capsules
We were then advised at 1 month old to start her on baby rice cereal.....
Bear in mind though Jalan is Cystic Fibrosis and all of them have to be started on "solids" early.....
She also has to have salt in all her food and cream in her breakfast and milk and potatoes and milk shakes...but if you do start them on something different give it to them for a couple of days and see how they react.....your baby will tell you if he/she has had enough....some days 1 teaspoon is enough......go slow and carefully and watch for lumps
Apart from a medical reason a good guide is when they can hold their head up to avoid choking on the food.....and are able to sit up a bit without you holding them
Luv Deb

Try this advice....

I started my son on single grain cereal when he was four months old...I didn't really notice any change in his sleeping patterns. When he started getting more active (crawling, pulling up, etc.) was when I noticed him sleeping through the entire night as opposed to waking up once.

But every baby is different. Even when my son was sleeping through the night regularly,  there were some times when he woke up. How you handle it depends on your parenting style. Some people say let them cry it out, some say use comfort and get them back to sleep, some say what you're doing (feeding) is right. He may be hungry, or he may just need reassurance after a night terror or waking up and not knowing how to put himself back to sleep.

Do what you're comfortable with and what you think is best for your baby.

Doctors usually want you to start cearals about 4mo. and it could be that your little bub is going through a growing spurt.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with your advice. Yes it used to be advised to introduce solids from 4 mths but it has now been changed to 6 mths. Part of the reason being to reduce allergies.

Here is a quote from the World Health Organisation "As a global public recommendation, infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health"

The NHMRC (National Health and Medical research Council) recommends from about 6 mths.

Doctors should no longer advise patients to introduce solids unledd for medical reasons (some reflux babies or failure to thrive babies benefit very well from early introduction)

Just thought I should pass on this info to you

HA! I introduced solids to my daughter from 6 weeks of age! All children are different, so some children may require solids earlier than others!
I think if we all listened to what health organisations said, our babies would be underweight!
And another thing i have noticed....children who don't have egg until late in life are more likely to contract allergies, than those who were introduced egg from a young age!

Perhaps all children are different however the recommendations are based on research into childhood allergies etc. Personally I follow the recommendations becasue I wouldn't have forgiven myself if one of my kids had developed an allergy etc becasue I decided to feed them food early. My first son had solids at 5 mths (recommendations at the time were 4-6mths) my second son did not start solids until well into 7 mths. Yes all children are different.

I have personally known of 2 parents who introduced solids at 6 and 8 weeks both children ended up in intensive car becasue their poor guts could not cope with solids food. the current recommendation is 6 mths whose to say that in a few years it won't change to 9 or even 12 mths. we as parents base our decisions on the info we have at the time.

the introductionof solids is more about developement and taste before one year of age. Most of their food source still comes from breastmilk or formula.

I think there is this undercurrent of competition amongst parents when they introduce solids. eg "Well my daughter had solids at 4 mths." " Oh really mines been having them since 6 weeks."

The person asking this question has already followed recommendations by breastfeeding until 6 mths. Please consider that someone else who is thinking the same question for maybe a 3 mth may premeturely introduce solids based on your answers and it may not necessarily be the right thing to do.

Totally Agree - 6mths earliest introduction to solids & take it really slow
I've been told this also by the doctors at the Royal Prince Alfred Allergy Clinic in Sydney. Even reflux babies are introduced a lot slower these day due to the specialized formulas available for them

I recommend that you do start giving your bub solids! As a baby gets older they become less satisfied with milk and start to become demanding very quickly! I advise that you monitor your son when you are eating your meals, for eg - if you are eating and his eyes bulge and he starts opening his mouth or licking his lips, then he is ready for solids and is still hungry!
Even if you only provide him with one meal a day for 2 weeks plus breastfeeding, and increase feeds from there it is something extra in his tummy! And just remember, babies will only eat what there body requires, so if he doesn't eat too much don't be too worried!

I'd probaby say yes. especially if your bub can sit in a higchair withour flopping around and has lost the tongue poke reflex.

It is recommended that you start with farex or similar as this has the least incidence of allergic reactions. Morning is also the best time to introduce a new food as then you have the day to wait for a reaction. No-one wants to have a child have a reaction at night and be in hospital IYKWIM.

When first doind solids give them a breastfeed first then offer a few teaspoons of cereal mixed with breastmilk. You can do this for about a week upping the amount as your child needs.(the recomendations are on the box) Solids is a learning phase for kids and breastmilk (or formula) will still give them their main food source up until one.

Have fun with this next stage of your baby and enjoy the mess

6 months is a good time to introduce solids, some say to start with breaky....I didn't I started with age appropriate farex or equivilant cereal and gave it to her around 6pm.Is your bub teething or is there any other problem that could be contributing.I would give solids a try, remember some bubs need to get a taste for it,they don't automatically love it so don't be worried just keep trying the same time each day.Other bubs wolf it down and want more they are all different.good luck regards Merle

Its possibly a sign that he's hungry, or if he's dribbling heaps he's probably on wis way to getting his first tooth!

I think your son is definitely ready for solids.  My daughter started at 4 months old and she was fully breastfed.  She was a big bub when she was born and the Doc recommended her to start at the 4 month mark.  Breastmilk will still be his most important source of nutrients, you're just giving him something a little extra... plus they LOVE having a 'new activity' to do during the day.  Even at 13 months, my daughter still is only brestfed, although down to one night feed a day as I am weaning in preparation for my second baby.
