Brainy baby?

I have had several comments lately about my 20month old daughters vocabulary (she has quite a large range of words and short sentences) and the fact that she can count to ten and knows some of the alphabet. Her speech is definitely developing much faster than her brother did, but I've heard girls often speak earlier than boys anyway. Sorry if it sounds like I'm having a big brag, I'm really not. I'm just wondering what is considered "average" for her age and if anyone knows of any activites or little tests I can do with her to see if she actually is advanced?

Brainy baby?
Sounds like my youngest! He started to read Harry Potter at 2 & half. He is now four and my older Children fight over who he will help with their homework. Off side is his mind never shuts down. He only sleeps 5 hours in every 24.( Yes thats why I'm writing this at 3am). Just beware of what you do if front of them as my son only has to see you do something once and he has it  !!!! My Ebay password has been changed 4 times. ( bought himself a stuffed daffy duck & remote control car) But BRAG all you want you should be proud , I know I am of all my children.

I know exactly what you mean by watching what you do in front of them, she copies everything I do and say. I kicked my toe on a table leg this morning and let out an "oh sh#t!" A few hours later she tripped over, dusted herself off and shouted "oh sh#t!" Of course it was in the middle of a busy supermarket too!

I have a foster grandson who is only 20 months old too and he can count to 10 and say most of the alphabet - his vocabulary is quite extensive and I think he is gorgeous.  So proud mum brag all u want as I believe a large lot of babies born since 2000 are much more advanced and evolved than ones born prior to this.  My grandson is also playing with toys and puzzles for 3yr olds as well.  It will be very interesting to see what he is like when he starts school.  By all means keep her mind stimulated even if it means letting her do and read stuff that is for much older children.  I feel these children are all very gifted - its just a matter of what area they are going to be the most gifted.

Brainy baby?

You could be describing my eldest son. He could say his alphabet and count to 10 by about 18mths (count to ten was before 1 year!) and was talking in sentances from about 1 year.

He is now 4 and considered 12mths ahead of his age group in most things. Socially he has a few problems. I have heard that there is a test in grade 4 for gifted children, they leave it that late because some kids peek early and then level out. this could happen to my son.

Keep her occupied with stimulating activities the more educational the better. If she keeps going like this you migh end up buying her toys neyond her age group. EG my son does puzzles for 5-8 yr olds. Puzzles are great they keep them occupied for ages as do construction type stuff and drawing activities. You could also look at stufflike Leapfrog pads- my son loves his I just wish I'd gotten it for him earlier.

I don't know of any tests but it sounds like you have a really brainy baby!
My little cousin could say calculator at the age of 18 months! He was a boy. HE is now 6!
I think alot of advancements has alot to do with the amount of time you spend with your child teaching him/her new things and also as to whether they have social interactions at a childcare centre or not!
And by the way, your a proud mum, your allowed to brag
