Hey all, I've got a quick question. My 11 month old has been throwing everything up since 2 o'clock this morning. Obviously the stomache flu, though I have no idea what to give her to prevent dehydration. Other than water. I would naturally give my older children ginger ale or power aide but I am not fussy about giving it to a baby. I'm getting more concerned now that it has kept up and she has not kept anything down in almost 12 hours. Any suggestions on what may help her keep something down would be greatly appreciated!!
Hi
Paedialyte gastrolyte glucolyte ORS there are lots of different names for it depending on where ever you are
Powerade and Gatorade and these type of drinks can work but the levels of sodium are so much lower.....
Dehydration needs to replace the sodium as well as the electrolytes
This is why they taste sweet....
It is one of the best things on the market for dehydration for anyone
Good for the kids after sports on a hot day too.
If your child does not like the taste then they don"t normally need it
When a child is dehydrated etc they cannot taste the salt because the body needs it to survive...it tastes sweet....if they are not starting to dehydrate it tastes disgustingly salty.....
This is from our CF specialists
The chemist have about 5-6 different flavours now.....
Our paediatrician has told us if she cant keep the glucolyte etc down then we take her to the hospital.....
Luv Deb
Once again thank you all so so much for your ideas. I truly appreciate every one.
As for an update, Riagan took small amounts of pedialyte throughout the day yesterday and luckily was able to hold it down. By last evening, she had some bananas and held them down as well. She has not gotten sick since about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. Only woke twice through the night. Had some cereal this am and is in fairly good spirits though not back to her old self yet, i'm hoping the worst is over. So thank you everyone, It means a lot to me when I am going through a rough time with her and I don't feel so alone in it when you guys share ideas.
Take care, and i'll keep you all posted as too how the recovery goes....:-) Being a mom is hard work even though I have 2 others you still worry just as much when they are sick.
Whilst lemonade (flat) ginger ale, icy poles and all these things are good, they are also very sweet, and not recommended by doctors, especially for babies! they also, in some cases will induce vomiting! Water when having a tummy bug is too bland and the others are too sweet! So to avoid dehydration, i recommend( passed on by my gp) mixing one third of apple juice with two thirds of water.... either this or hydralite ice blocks!
These things are not too sweet and not too bland.... also a hydralite icy pole is designed for gastro and prevention of dehydration!
I have found the apple juice mix to be perfect for me!
Also if your child is on solids, wait 24 hours at least before you give him/her any solids! It will give stomach time to settle down!
In this time i recommend (Also through a doctor) only a bland diet such as mash potato without the milk as this will upset the tummy again, or sao biscuits and vegemite!
I hope i have helped some! I hope the little one gets better soon!
Babies dehydrate very quickly so icy poles, very dilute cordial or juice is great but if it goes on for too long without stopping -take your baby to a hospital and ask them to check baby - no one will mind and its not too much trouble!!!
When my son went through a weeks worth of continuous vomiting & I felt he was starving to death through not being able to keep anything down, a wonderful little Asian nurse at my local child care center suggested I boil some white rice & give him the 'starchy' water to drink as it would help to give him a feeling of fullness in his tummy & would not encourage any more vomiting. He was about the same age as your baby & it certainly worked for him - Hope this helps & that he recovers soon
Diluted apple juice, when my son was 10mths old he had gastro and was terribly dehydrated, i took him to the doc and he told me that when they are dehydrated they need the sugar from the apple juice as water can further dehydrate them. So i did 1/4 juice and 3/4 water and gave him small sips every 10 mins he improved in an hour, although if she cant keep any fluids down its best to take her to the hospital so they can put a drip in. Hope she is better soon.
HYDROLITE think thats how you spell it can get it from supermarket or chemist in liquid drink or icy poles and to get vitamins aswell back into your baby's system you can also get from the chemist these special lollypops they think that they are cool
But i do recommend the hydrolites i had the liquid and icypoles both worked and they stay indate for the next time(and i used it for my husband aswell and it worked so for all ages)
when my daughter was 4 months she had vomitting adn dyorhera i was very worried as well as nothing would stay down apart from water, i took her to hospital (as it was sunday) and she hadn't eaten all day, and they told me not to worry as long as i was giving her 10mls of water at a time she would be fine. they said just think when you have something like this can you eat, do you want to eat??? is all you can hold down water?? so basically it is fine as long as she is having plenty of water she will be fine. i hope the poor little thing is feeling better soon, its horrible when we can't do anything for them. Britt xx
Hello, and thank you all so much for your insight. I'm getting quite nervous now. She's never been this sick before. I have some "Pedialyte" on it's way. In canada it's a fruity drink for infants and toddlers and it's full of electrolytes. So if she doesn't keep that down i'm afraid it's off to the hospital we go.
we could not get my son to drink the pedialyte. He hated it. If you have this problem, I would give the watered down gatorade a try and just give her a few sips at a time, every 15 minutes. I'm sure you are worried about the sugar but at this point, anything is better than having to take her to the hospital. Good luck. I know it is so scary.
Pedialyte is excellent but as a few others have mentioned only offer little sips every 10 minutes or so. A bug gulp and it will all come back up! Also wait 10 minutes after she vomits to offer more fluid, if you give her a drink straight after it interacts with the stomach acids and she'll vomit again within minutes. Doc told me it takes much longer than we think for a bub to actually dehydrate, so as scary as it is try not to panic. These bugs usually persist for about 24hrs. Also avoid ALL dairy. When my daughter had the rota virus I had to switch to a soy formula for about 3 weeks after as everytime she had a bit of dairy she would vomit or get diorreah. Any stomach virus can cause lasctose intolerance for a while after.
Definitely stick with the Pedialyte....make sure it is in small amounts at a time...too much and she will not keep it down either.
GOOD LUCK....it's scary the first time!
when you give her the pedialyte Give it to only a little at a time with a syringe say 1mil over a period of a minute and do this continually for 30 minutes... It stays down better this way...
And how do I know... this is what the childrens mater hospital in brisbane made me do when skylar got real sick and had the rotar virus....
however if she refuses to keep it down this way then i go to the hospital before she gets dehidrated...
Thanks peachy.. I am defiently going to remember this incase this ever happens to my daughter. I never knew that, I guess because I have never had to use it before.
I hope that she gets better for you. I think I would be nervous as well if that happened to my daughter whos really close in age with yours! I have heard of Pedialyte and heard that it works great. I hope it works get for you and that you wont have to go to the hopsital!
You need to keep your little one hydrated sips of cool boiled water, possible icy poles to suck on are best. There was a pkt product you could buy from the chemist that helped replace the electroltes from the body I read somewhere that a subsittute would be to add a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of sugar and a tablespoon of OJ to a litre of cool boiled water, if it persists see a DR asap.
I wish I could help you but as you are in canada I would not know your products. in australia we have this powder that we disolve in water (it has a lemony salty taste)
