Why don't people vote?

Hi all minti goers, hope you are all well.

My question relates to the advice section. There are pieces of advice that have been visited hundreds of times and yet there are only a couple of votes. Why aren't people taking the extra 2 seconds it takes to vote on the article they have just spent the time to read?

People have gone to a lot of time and effort to write these articles so please show your appreciation and vote for them. Read the article first, vote and then look at who wrote it. Who it comes from means nothing compared to the advice they offer.

Why don't people vote?
let me solve this issue for everyone.
the 2 main reasons why there are normally far more visits than votes are...
  1. A lot of people that read Minti advice are NOT Minti members. A lot of them arrive from search engines and do not become members.
  2. The other main reason is that a lot of people visit some advice and then dont read it all.
Hope that helps.

But I do agree that if you read some advice it is best (and polite) to vote accordingly.

Why don't people vote?
I vote on most of the articles I visit, but often don't leave comment unless I really have something to say. As mentioned by someone else I also don't vote if the article doesn't grab me at that moment, sometimes I will return to it & give it another go later. I've learned some wonderful things on Minti & really get a kick out of sharing the site with family & friends when they drop or when chatting over the phone.  Lately I'm finding the voting system is a little hard as I really hate giving someone a score lower than 4. If I'm not taken with an article I just don't vote on it any more, because someone has worked really hard on something & who am I to say it is not up to standard. It may be the best work they have ever done & only be a line long. Usually things are either V Good or Exceptional in my eyes. We have so many mums trying their best who hardly speak any english & I commend them for their efforts.

BTW - i forgot - I wanted to say that we get to hung up on voting sometimes. If I can share with other people & something I say helps them I'm wrapped. I don't care if I'm the last on the list or how many points I get, but I do admit to being thrilled when people have taken the time to read something I've written. Maybe 1 vote should be to say... hey I've visited this advice, but am declining to grade it, sort of like a 'thank you for sharing' point.

Why don't people vote?
Hi
I know on articles i do vote on each time there is a new comment i go back to read what it is.....Until minti has a fix that only shows the first visit per person not subsequent there are always going to be a lot off visits....
There are some articles that i don't vote on purposely as why should i mark a good article down just because i don't agree with what they say...I sometimes cannot mark it high as it does not concern me.....and the category is good or it works for me....if the wording was changed on the votes i think a lot more people would vote....
Just my thought
Luv Deb

Ps I haven't seen your name on everyones articles...don't you vote???

After all there is 17328 people on Minti at this present moment 3533 articles are in the top list at least and you have only voted on 102 and commented on 118......
That's a lot of votes....wonder how long it would take to read everyone on mintis articles and vote
Hope this don't offend you but i had to show some of the statistics as to why it don't look like everyone votes as well.....
Luv once again
Deb

Why don't people vote?
I'm not offended. Yes i do vote but i don't always leave comments because the comment i would have made was already there. and as far as i can tell comments are counted from the Q&A  as well because i don't comment without voting, thats just me.

Why don't people vote?
Some people have already voted and made a comment they will go back and check the comment, which counts as another visit.
They may go back to change a vote.. Yet another visit..
Or as the comments usually have different headings, not everyone realizes they have already been there and clicks on them..  Every click counts as a visit... So sometimes you can get people revisiting to check their own advice and see what comments have been made, or just people not realizing they have already visited and voted.....   I  know I have done this many times myself...

Why don't people vote?

Maybe because the same 3 or 4 people that do vote keep going back to check the advice time and again?  Maybe people can't decide what their vote should be, or the advice doesn't apply to them, so they leave it alone for others to decide?  Or maybe they are like me and often forget to vote after reading something?

To get the answer to that question you would have to look through all the 17,000+ recent activity lists for each member, and when you have found the ones that are constantly not voting on advice, you would have to then message them personally to ask each individual why they aren't voting.  Then you would have to compile the data you collected after receiving their answers and  then you would have a range of reasons that could formulate a graph of most to least common reasons.  I think you'll generally find that most people that don't vote don't do so because of indecision or irrelevance to them.

Or...
They spend too much time in Q&A answering questions about people voting or not voting.  This is like the ... I think ... 3rd or 4th question on this topic in the past month?

Oops...
I just wrote that in a very ambiguous manner.  I was having a dig at myself there, not you, because I've spent too much time in Q&A to read a lot of advice, and I was fool enough to have answered all those questions.

Why don't people vote?
jusr remember that every time someone visits the article it counts as a new visitor say I write an article and go and check the coments and votes each time it counts as a new visit, so if there are 20 visits and 7 votes it could be that only 7 individuals saw or read the article the rest are just the same people re-visiting or the author.

you are correct - it shouldn't count as a new visit if the same person goes back to the article, or reload the article.

Yep, I'm pretty sure your right... it doesn't matter how many times the author visits their own advice because it wont add another visitor to the count. If it did, I'd have it showing that I had at least 3 visitors almost immediately after I uploaded each new advice & that doesn't occur. (I always seem to need to re-edit my advice at least 2 times in the first few minutes... There's always some silly error I pick up & JUST HAVE to CHANGE - I need a proof reader)
