To dye or not to dye.

ok I have a small problem. My edest daughter Maria has asked if she can dye her hair and at 11 almost 12 years old I think this is too young but if I say no to her I feel like a hypocrite because I dye my hair. What reasons could I giver her as to why I really don't want her to yet? Please help.

To dye or not to dye.

You asked "what reasons could I give her as to why I really don't want her to (dye her hair) yet ?"   Well, why do you not want her to ? I do not need to know the answer to that question .... but you should just tell her what you think ... Just be honest ! If there were some medical concern or something like that I could tell you a specific reason and explanation as to why not to do it .... however, just your not wanting it to happen because of your own beliefs ... The only thing I can say is  just tell her why you do not want it to happen ! The reasons you can give her for not dying her hair are your personal feelings about it and you should candidly express your personal feelings to your young girl ....

They always say that honesty is the best policy ! Best Wishes !

To dye or not to dye.

I myself was aloud to dye my hair at a young age.  My sister was wanting to be a hairdresser so my mother allowed me to be her ginny pig.   My nieces dye there hair and they are 11 and 13 and they have been dying there hair for a while now.  I think it all matters on you.  If you dotn feel right about it then follow your instincts, remeber you are the mother and you make the rules.  There is a pre teen type hait dye that you can buy.  It has a cartoon caracter of a girl on the front.  I am sorry I dont know the brand name but if isn't a perminent colour and it doesn't use the harse chemicals. That is what my neices started using when they starting colouring there hair.  Children are more mature now then when I was a kid.  I  think if it wasn't for my sister practacing I probably would of never dyed my hair at a young age.  Good luck and remeber to not fell bad about your dissicion because you know best.

Tell your daughter you want her to be a little older to make this decision. My mom let me die my hair at 14 and I used sun in at 12. You're the parent so you don't even have to give a reason. Another thing that might help is to give her a specific date/age she can die her hair, like tell her you will pay for highlights at her 14th (whatever age you choose) birthday. Good luck!!

My mum let me get foils at 12 - I'm now 31 lol.
I think I got the foils done a few times a year when I got good grades ect.
Then when I got my job I paid for my own.

To dye or not to dye.
mt daughter wanted to start dying her hair early  as i am always doing hair at home and colouring mine all sorts of colours, so i explained what the chemicals would do to her hair and that i wanted her hair to be natural and undamaged, but i did put a semi permanent in that was the same shade but with a hint of red etc, then as she hit 13 i knew i had a battle on my hands so i do her hair myself and she actually has chocolate brown hair with a small section at the front and back of royal blue fudge and she looks gorgeous and trendy ,without getting her hair bombarded with permanent chemicals ity just looks like she has fancy colour everywhere when in fact it is only a section 5 centimeters wide but looks very affective, i then treat her hair with conditioners etc.

To dye or not to dye.

Me and my sister sort of started dying our hair at that age... mum would not let us change our hair colour completely but she did lets us have streaks and foils.... she just used the left over dye from her hair to do this....

so perhaps you could meet half way and let her get streaks rather than dye it completely just a suggestion ok

Have a look here
Hey matey,

I only allowed Kat to do it when she turned into her teens. I just think they are going to put enough chemicals in their hair during their adult life....but when Kat wanted to do it kids weren't going through the hair changes they are today....things are a little different now.....I'm sounding old aren't I??? lol

Anyway you can have a look here at this website it gives a few tips and ideas. Don't know if it will help you but it does promote talking to parents about changing hair styles and gives some suggestions about what to do, problems which arise and so on.....

Good Luck

Hi there, as well as the rinses you can also buy coloured mousses maybe she would like these. I believe they come out everytime you was your hair so even if she wanted to get an outrageous colour it would only last the day or so. Hope this helps.

I would say not.  I think it is too young and it does damage your hair.  once you start to dye then it's hard to go back to your original colours, rinses, foils full or not.  I would delay it if possible.  The only thing I couldn't see that was mentioned is maybe some of those different colour extensions you can buy.  They do have really cheap ones and some very expensive ones but I have seen some middle range extensons you can buy in all sorts of colours.  So you could maybe get a couple of those and tell her that she can then change the colour once a week etc..

To dye or not to dye.

We have told our 10 year old that she can dye (or streak) her hair when she can afford to pay for it with her own money.  At the moment that works but for how long I don't know. Several of her friends have had their hair dyed since they were seven or eight years old.

We let Michaela and Tiana do foils but told them no full hair dyes. It is a comprimise. I too snuck off into the toilet and dyed mine black with my friends hehe. I am probably not much help hehe

Foils
Partial highlights are usually around $50. Then full highlights can be $100 or greater. A good stylist will do it so that growing it out won't really impact it.

However, I'd go with those who have suggested temporary rinses that will just add a little change for a few shampoos. Cheaper, less permanant, and definitely less damaging!

Foils
Hi there I let my girls have 5 in the front really they are about $5 to $8 each here in Toowoomba and cheaper in Oakey I would never pay $100 for them. Depnding on how particular you are there is also kits you can buy from places like priceline that tell you how to do this and provide you with the things you need. I just use foils in my hair and the girls because my hair does not hold rinses at all and be careful because blackwidowkates holds them till they grow out so it jsut depends on the hair I spose
Cheers

Foils
For a cheap way to get foils - or other hair styles - the local TAFE who runs hairdressing courses usually offers cheap rates if you are willing to have the apprentices do it.  They're not allowed to do it until they're in 2nd year and are always supervised.  Plus, they want to impress so they'll often take more pride in their work and do a better job than someone who just does it day in, day out.  It just takes a bit longer.

To dye or not to dye.

well how about you meet in the middle? why not let her put a rinse in her hair instead? it washes out in 6-7 washes ( i think thats how long from memory) and she cant say you havent let her dye her hair and you win coz its not permanent.

if shes anything like me and you say no she will end up going to school one day and getting her friends to dye it in the school toilets and you will end up with all colours of the rainbow in her hair. ( god i hope shes not like me rofl)

Personally I don't think its a problem if a 12 yr old dyes their hair.. I have seen 7 yr olds with their hair dyed LOL... I do it, so why can't my kids? Everyone dyes their hair, or has once in their life time and i've dyed mine soo many times and its not ruined... Some people are different I guess than others!!

To dye or not to dye.
We have always told our girls how much dying your hair can damage it, because before the dye can attach to your hair, they use chemicals to strip down each hair and roughen it up so that the dye has something to attach to, other wise it would just slide off. Especially if you have long hair because the hair on the bottom has been stripped many times and eventually becomes like old barbie doll hair, no longer soft and silky.

When you are young, your hair color is very vibrant (sigh, like everything else) but as you age it starts to get duller and lose it's shine and radiance so then you may want to dye it to bring it back to life a little, but no dye can replace nature, so coloring your hair when you are young and it is still soft and bright and reflects the sunlight in such a lovely way just ends up covering up its natural beauty with paint. While I am sure you have lovely hair, if you take her out in the sun for a comparison right before you are ready to reapply, she will probably be able to see a difference.

This worked on one of our kids, the other is more headstrong and snuck off and did it anyway (nothing drastic, just a little lightener) and really ruined her hair, so now they both know.
