What to do from here

Hi, I hoping someone can tell me the best course of action to take.  We only have one medical centre here in the town that I live in (which has 3 doctors) and it is impossible to make an appointment to see a doctor.

I suffer from Graves Disease which should be closely monitored and I haven't been able to get in to see the Doctor since August.  I had a blood test done in November and when I rang for the result, the reception wouldn't give them to me as she said "the doctor really needs to talk to you".  So obviously my results were bad enough to be a worry to the doctor.  So I asked for an appointment and the receptionist told me "Sorry we are fully booked out".  So I stated "Then the Doctor doesn't really need to see me!!!!".  To which she replied that he does.  I have tried 3 more times to get an appointment with no joy.

I must mention, that this particular surgery never has any cars parked in it.  On the odd occasion over the years where I have gotten an appointment, there is never anyone else in the waiting room.

The end result of this is that I am having to constantly self medicate myself (which is dangerous and horrifies my specialist)  but what else can I do.  If my medication is making me worse then I stop it.  When I start getting really sick again then I restart it.

What can I do?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: What to do from here

Hi. Not sure if i'm doing this right, as it is my first time. Sorry if i'm not.

I do also suffer from severe Graves Disease, and i know how dangerous it can really be. Please do follow all the advice that you have been given, inregards to contacting that awful medical clinic, demanding you need to see the doctor urgently.  And if they are not of any help again. Please contact the medical association, the local papers and who ever else you can. That Medical Clinic is at fault for placing your life and health at risk, and anyone else, and you should not have to go through that, and feel like that too. Good luck and hopefully all will work out.

Thank you, Deee

(Ps, sorry if i have made any mistakes)

Thank you peachynowamum,  I like this action plan you have suggested.  This morning I felt like all was so hopeless and I didn't know which way to turn.  But everyone has shown me that I do have options.

Thank you very much.  Cheers Colleen

Ring the AMA immediately and report the surgery, sounds to me like an overly self-important receptionist to me. You could also try writing to the local paper, they usually like a little bit of scandal. If you have test results waiting, the Dr. has said he/she wants to see you. then the receptionist is totally out of order and deserves the order of the (size 12) boot. Good luck. Scream and scream loud.

Okay I may sound a little silly here but what is the AMA?  When I explained the problem to my specialist he suggested that I drive to the larger town where he is situated to see one of the doctors there.  This town is 2 hours away and that's a long way to go just to be monitored every few weeks.  I mean if I can't resolve the issue here with the doctors then I guess that's what I will have to do but I sure would prefer to resolve the issues here.  I can't be the only one here having this problem surely.  Thank you for your advice.

Sorry, the AMA is the Australian Medical Association. That's the Doctors own association but they want to make sure their members do the right thing, they should be in your Capital City phone book or just look them up on Google, good luck.

The AMA is a great idea and knowing some of the stories of the DRs in question it would not suprise me if they have been reported in the past. And whats with her telling you can on;y book from week to week Thats bull. Demand that you be booked on the next available appointment or you willbe making a formal complaint (or writing about it in the paper-small town they'll love it).

sadly i dont think that youa re alone in this predicament. in the town where i live trying to get in to see your regular Dr is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.. virtualy impossible. If the Dr's arent up and leaving town, they are closing their books or are booked so far in advance you have to make monthly appointments just on the off chance (granted i have never done that but sometimes i wonder if i wouldnt be better off) The GOOD thing here is that if my kids are ill i can take them to the medical centre where they are regulars at, and the clinic sister will see them, and then get a Dr to come and examine them, so they are never at risk. Me however..lol.. well.. its just luck of the draw. Luckily i dont suffer from any serious illness like you do.  i think if i were you, and if it were possible id be taking myself out of their hands and finding a Dr in a nearby town.  Good luck!!!

I know the Drs you're talking about and they also have an office in the nearby town. It is actually easier to get an appointment with them. Whenever I've called and they are booked they tell me to ring the next morning at 8.15 and they will get me in. So far I have always been able to get in.  Put your foot down and demand they find you an appointment.

You could always try the sitting in their office until they get you in.

Thanks Phoenix,  When I ring I always ask for an appointment either in this town or the nearby town that you are talking about but I don't get any joy.  I've even tried ringing at 8:15am but they tell me that they can't fit me in unless there has been a cancellation.  I've even asked them to book me in 2 or 3 weeks in advance but apparantly they only make bookings from week to week.

At least the surgery in the nearby town has cars parked outside and people in the waiting room LOL.

I have to agree with what everyone has been saying. I am horrified that a doctors surgery would place someone knowingly in danger.

I would present myself as a "walk-in", ask about a double booking and sit there until the doctor see me! If the doctor is concerned about your results they should ring and pass them on. I'm surprised the doctor has not called your specalist to report the results so then the specalist could make any changes that may be needed.

If you decide to ring again about an appointment, and there are none, tell the receptionist that you wish to speak to the doctor. If they will not put you through then march down there any wait.

After reading about your problem I have never been so glad that my doctor is caring enough to make room for as many patients as possible and makes personal phone calls with test results if she needs to.

Maybe waiting until just before closing and turning up would work. Once you have the results, if possible, change doctors and ask for your records to be sent to the new surgery.

Good luck and I hope you can sort this problem out.

I think its time to get the ball rolling to see a doctor in a town that is not far from where you live! Once you have eased in to this medical practitioner, i would then report the medical centre in your town, as this is classed as malpractice. A medical board will hear the case, and you will get compensation if something goes wrong  due to the malpractice of these doctors! They will lose their doctors license and the centre will be closed as will the case! I think its important that you do this, not only for your safety, but for the safety of others aswell!

either go to the hospital and talk to them get other tests done or maybe they being docs themselfs can ring up on your behalf and request that your testresults  be sent to them via fax or over the phone

or the other option is just go down to them yourself ,, even if they say they booked out or not and let the girl at the desk know that because the doc said he wants to see you about this and that its stressing you that you will not leave untill he talks to you about this ,, some docs have idiots working at the frount desk )and maybe he dosent even

know that u have been trying to get in to see him ,,,  most docs are scared about legal things and will be only happy to tell you once you have planted yourself there ,stand at the desk if you have to and when he comes out to call on another paitent walk right up to him so your in his face and ask him ..

I have considered that maybe the doctor doesn't know I can't get in and I'm considering writing to him and explaining the situation.  Thanks for your advice.

Hi there,  I'm so sorry to hear of your situation.  I do know how serious Graves Disease is as my sister in-law was diagnosed with it about a year ago.  I would suggest you go to the medical centre and demand politely to see a doctor and not leave until you see one even if it takes all day and keep going back every day until they see you.  You can not afford not to get your results.  Or if there is a another town not to far away that has medical facilities go there.  Take Care and Good Luck

Colleen I would find one of the doctors home numbers in the phone book and ring him, they usually have some-one on call so I would class this as a very real need and ring them personally. You could travel to the next hospital and do the tests over again......I think you need to do something quickly your boys need you! Let me know if I can do any-more for you hugs Merle

No need to apologise Merle, maybe I misunderstood.  Doesn't matter either way.  The important thing is that you took the time to give me advice and I appreciate that.

In fact I appreciate all the advice I have received here today and everyone has given me options to look at.  All felt hopeless this morning, but now just reading all this advice has shown me that people here on Minti care and there is hope after all.

Thank you everybody.

It sounds as though you really need to see a doctor. How far away is the next town with a doctors surgery?  even if it is an hour it will be an hour well spent. Also i town our doctors are always booked and the good ones 2 weeks in advance!! but when i ring and say its urgent I always get me or the kids an appointment. If all else fails go to the hospitals outpatients and wait to see a doctor their, they might even get there act together if more people went up the hospital. Ask the girls on the desk at the doctors how they are full when the car park and waiting rooms are empty? Good luck and I hope you get this solved.

I use to go to the doctor in the next town but the two doctors left in February 2006 and now they only  have 1 doctor on 2 days a week and it is also impossible to get in there. But at least you can understand that with 1 doctor 2 days a week they are busy and you can understand them being booked out.   Thanks for your advice.
