cot to bed

HI there,

What's a good age to start the transition from cot to bed? My son is 19months old, but he's rapidly outgrowing his cot. Is this too young? If not how do I go about it without having him getting up and wandering around instead of sleeping?

cot to bed

My eldest son went into a cot at 13 months of age. My other 2 children where 17 months.  We put a gate at their bedroom door so they couldn't get out of their rooms. If they were crying at the gate, we would just calmly go in there, explain that it was sleep time, put them back into bed and walk away without looking back.  It did take a little while for them to get the hang of it, and they often played in their rooms for a while, but when they got really tired, they climbed up on their beds and fell asleep.  When they woke, we gave them lots of praise and cuddles for being so good at going to sleep in their  "special big bed"!

Hope this helps

Tracey

My son moved to a bed at around that time.  Our bedrooms are on the 2nd floor but we already had a gate at the top of the stairs.  There really isn't any way to keep them in their room unless you put a gate up in front of the door or close the door.  We didn't want to close the door on our son and for the most part, he just wanders into our room if he wakes up.  The gate at the top of the stairs means we don't have to worry about him hurting himself in the middle of the night.  Good luck.

My son was a year old when we got him his big boy bed.  He was always scared of his crib so as soon as he was able to get up and down the couch I got him his bed.  I don't think your son is so young as long as he is able to get up and on.  Hope i have helped.

Hi - Well as a rule they generally say that when your little one is climbing from the cot then its time to make the change to the bed.

This is the way i've always done it and it's never let me down so far. My 1st daughter was in a bed at 15months while my 2nd daughter didn't move to a bed until 2.5 years. My third is only nine months so we are still waiting on that one.

If you are really concerned about usinf a bed there are bed rails that you can buy from Target/Kmart and most baby stores or you can buy a training bed that you can later convert into a single bed.

It's hard watching our little grow but I think if you watch them they will let you know when they are ready. Same with toilet training. My 1st was toilet trained by 18months and my 2nd was nearly 24 months . . .  Each child develops at different ages . .

Hope this helps . . . Cheers Kellz

my two kids were in a bed by 12 mths. (my daughter was toilet training herself at 16mths so she needed to be able to get the toilet.......

just put a door gate at the door to stop night wanderings...... and if you are worried get one of those bed safety things......stops them rolling out....my kids slept better in the bed than they ever did in the cot......

My Zack is 20 months and he has been in his bed for a few months now. I think it all depends on you and your child if you think he is ready then go for it I know Zack loves his car bed.
