Hey all, Well Riagan is now one year old and the cost of formula (follow up since i've stopped nursing) is outrageous. I just realized that I could probably start weening her onto whole milk now. How is the best way to do this?? Do I start by putting an ounze of it into her bottle with her formula? Or should I maybe give her an ounze or so by itself?? Not quite sure how I did it before as it has been so long, I can't remember. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
My son was 7m when we came to australia and I had only 2 packets of formula with me enough for abot 2 weeks (these are small packets around 250g or so) so I tried to give him australian formula he would not take it we tried all brands with no luck. so he went on cows milk I think 2parts milk 1 part water cant remember and his bm was hard for few weeks but he was ok.
I actually switched to cows milk when Francis was between 10 to 11 months old...
I started out one ounce cows milk 7 ounce formula I did that for a couple of days then upped the cows milk to two ounces and 6 ounce formula.. I kept doing that and changing it ever couple of days. It was not long at all before he was on full milk...
I switched my son to cow's milk at around the same age because of the cost of formula. It took awhile. He hated it diluted and for the first couple of days I had to actually put a tiny bit of chocolate quick in it (as his first taste of milk was poppy's chocolate milkshake). We never had any problems with him getting constipated or anything like. Just experiment and see what works best for you
Hey and thank you for telling me all your opinions and comments!! Transitioning a child is a very delicate thing and I do want to do it properly. When I do change over to cows milk it will for sure be whole milk. They do need the added fat for brain development. I also plan on feeding foods high in fibre when I make the change over as well...for example, prunes are great for avoiding constipation. She is on "carnation follow up" at present and it is good until 18 mo's so i'll keep up with that for a while and eventually introduce whole milk when I feel the time is right.
Once again thank you and i'll take each bit of advice and keep it all in mind when I do switch.
You can Start giving her cows milk, BUT! You have to dilute it with water as it is too strong for bubs tummy, she will most likely end up with the runs or constipation. I wheened my eldest two onto cows milk at 12 months and both of them where thin compared to my youngest to, they where also very withdrawn tired easily. I recently heard that milk manufacturers have been diluting Full Cream Cows Milk with powdered milk, to give it a better flavour seeing there is a drought and little food ofr the cows. So i wouldn't recomend it as she is still very young.. But if you do decide that this is what you want to do. Dont DONT DONT give any child under 6 years of age skinny milk, no fat milk..
Your childs brain floats in fluids that protect it, they get these from milk.. If you give her skinny milk the potasium levels are way to high as full cream milk brings these levels down and you can seriously injure her.. It's like giving her a cup of salt to eat it will dehidrate her.
Now i know this is a fact as an ex inlaw of mine has over weight children , the youngest was 2 she was transfered to skinny milk and is now retarded from eatting and drinking it, the lack of fat and fluid around the brain has seriously damaged her.. Don't let this be yours or anyones child
Ummm my kids weren't transitioned onto cows milk and they are fine. They never got constipated, sick or the runs. So that isn't true for all kids.
Also my Aunties whole family drink skim milk and have their whole lives. When all 4 girls went on to milk they started on skinny milk so that is the silliest thing i heard about it causing brain dmg!
Maybe it was caused another way!
My daughter is just 11 months old and I had tried cows milk on her but she was getting really constipated. So if I were you, I would gradually introduce it over a course of a month or maybe more. That way she gets used to it and if you see her getting constipated stop it immdeitatly and go to your family doctor to see if there is any other milk you can give her. This is what I am going to have to do once I transfer it. Also.. There are formula's out there that go to 18months, I know they are expensive but if my daughter can't have it, I'd rather give her formula instead because it has all of the nutrients than what milk does!
I would gradually start replacing her formula with real food. You may have to start with a few ounces or just one bottle, and do it over a weeks time period. I would give her a little milk in a sippie cup, and just be patient. It may take up to a week, but it can be done. I think babies only need 8 oz of cows milk a day, so you are basically just replacing 1-2 bottles with the cows milk and the rest of nurishment should be from stage 3 baby food and whatever you and your family eat, cut up.
when my little one turned one is stopped breast feeding, then i introduced fresh milk during the day , and formula at night. that way when she doesn eat very well, i know her nutritional needs are covered.
I have heard most people tell me to add it to the formula BUT the tried and tested way I did it was just swap it over. They both rejected it and wouldn't drink it for a few days then realised that it was all they were getting and guzzled it up.
I can only say what I did........I put both mine onto straight cows milk.....I had been making them custard with cows milk though and on cereal so they did have some in there system prior to the switch.regards Merle
