Colds - school or not?

Since my son came to live with me last year, one thing that I have great trouble determining is when he has a cold, is he well enough for school or not? He is always coming down with a cold bug of some kind but I am never sure if it is bad enough to stay home or if he should still go.

Take today for example, he has a bit of a cough, and a stuffed up/runny nose, and he is a bit croaky, but is that worthy of staying home? I have no clue. He is in good spirits and doesn't seem to have a temperature. He's not moping about saying he feels sick. But he -is- coughing, and seems a little congested.

I've kept him home today, but this happened last term too, every couple of weeks he would get a cold and he ended up having too many days off I think. So I just wanted to ask, what to you is sick enough for staying home, and when would you feel comfortable sending them back to school?

Some good advice to consider from the members so far but as an ex -chalkie [teacher] here are a few more things to ponder:

  • if you are uncertain about whether to send your child or not, after going through the advice given so far, write a short note to the teacher about your son's condition asking them to contact you if it gets worse or is affecting the learning or the health of others around them
  • if the cold/virus is going to affect other children then does your child know the correct method of coughing/ sneezing so that germs are not spread to others throughout the classroom
  • do you provide  adequate tissues/ handkerchiefs for your child?
  • is you child taking any medication for the cold/ virus? If so the teacher will need to be informed by note.

Sending your child to school with a note explaining the condition of your child will put your mind at rest. It's good to include your contact numbers, even though the school has these the teacher will appreciate having it at hand throughout the day if needed.  Your note will also let the teacher know that you are a caring [arent who not only looks after her child but also cares for the well-being of his classmates.

Colds - school or not?

Hi there,

My gerneral rule is to check my kids temp, if its up I keep them home if its not I send them to school.

BUT upon saying this what you are describing is sounding more like allergies . . . I think it may be a good idea to see you doctor and get your child checked as it may be easier for you and your son . . .

Cheers Kellz

Hi I would possibly take him to get some bloods done, just to see if he is lacking in something.Generally I think send them if they are happy and doing all their normal activities.I would also add that if they are in the beginings of the flue it might be better to stay home.If it is just a cold they usually are fine. regards Merle

Curious on if you've taken the lad to an ENT specialist. Both my grandkids & son all were constantly sick, with runny noses, ears that looked infected & swollen tonsils... they discovered that all were the victims of massive tonsils which needed to come out... the baby is only 2 & will be seeing about surgery this week. Once the tonsils & adenoids were removed they have never looked back.. I know these days they hesitate to do this op, but if a Paediatrician refers them to a ENT doc then the op is done without argument.. the kids also stopped snoring & sleep so much better.

mine did this all the way through school  and where always in sick bay ,, each time i took them to the docs as i also wanted to be sure or not if they where a little sick or where just trying to get out of school.. after many doc appointments and the doc telling them that they where fine or not ,, they started to feel a little silly as they wernt always getting the right feedback from the doctor ( as at times they where just putting it on ) ..

tell your little on that you will take him to the doc just in case at least you will know one if hes really ill and two if they think its worth to stay home for a day or two or not ...

with a runny nose and cough i would still take him to the docs as the doc may be able to offer something that will clear him up ..

The general rule of thumb I tend to use is if children are well within themselves and able to participate happily in activities they can go to school/daycare.  If not, it's best if they don't go.  I know it's hard especially if you have to take a day off work to stay home but that's the rule I go by for my child and as a childcare worker.  Also if they have an ifectious disease of course they need to stay home whether they are unwell or not.  So if your child seems able to participate in activities at school with his cold he is probably able to attend.  If he is run-down and not able to do these things he might be better off at home.
