For sure - check with your doctor but I still want to share some advice that an experienced infant welfare nurse gave to me which turned out to be invaluable - she said to me that whatever the breastfeeding problem (unless there was a medical cause that needed treating) it would be gone in 12 weeks. She had seen in hundreds of thousands of times in her career and was common advice that she gave.  Sure enough, my problems (vasospasm) were gone in 12 weeks.  If it is vasospasm, you can also wear a heated breast pad.  They work wonderfully too.

Definately confirm it with a medical professional but it does sound like either thrush or nipple vasospasm. Signs of thrush include redness, shiny areas, flaking or white spots, extremely sore or sensitive nipples, itching and knife like pain or burning. Vasospasm is a sharp pain or burning/stinging accompanied by a whitining of the nipple(blanching) it then turns from red to blue. You can get both of these together as sometimes vasospasm is a sign that bubs isn't correctly attached or you have thrush.

Remember as babies get older and move around more they fiddle with the nipple while playing and move it int he mouth. Although they may look correctly attached they might be causing the pain.

You can contact an ABA counsellor via e-mail or find a number for one on their website www.breastfeeding.asn.au

Hope it gets better

It sounds alot like what i had when feeding and that was thrush. Please see you doctor or lataction consultant for confirmation. It is not something you are doing wrong as you have had 7 successful months. I used to cry when feeding and sought help reluctantly. If it is thrush it is not due to you eating habits, hygene ect like other thrushes could be. If you dont wnat to see doc a lactation consultant may be more understanding and experienced in these probs. Go to your nearest child health clinic (austalia) or womens health centre for info on where to find them. Good luck. You have made it this far don't give up. You are not doing anything wrong.

Go see a doctor - preferably one who knows about these things in particular.  I had a lot of problems with this with my first child - ranging from mastitis to thrush and white spot.  Hopefully you can get help as it is very nasty.  i remember sitting and sobbing while i fed from the pain.  Sorry!!

Hi there,  When I first started breastfeeding my nipples were very sore and cracked so I bought  AVENT Soothing Nipple Cream and help dramatically, also you can buy AVENT nipple shields which I have not personally tried but some mother's in my mother's have and they said it helps.

careful when useing nipple creams. I was recomended a lanolin cream but not told that only one brand is 'safe' for nursing mothers as others contain chemicals that can be passed onto baby. (Lanolin is -i thnk- sheeps fat and chemicals used to dip and treat animal go through to the fat). Avent though is probably safe. Just thought i would add this.

Re: HELP very soar nipple

Lanolin is actually the substance found at the base of the wool near the skin on sheep.  it is a natural moisturiser and waterproofing agent.

Purified lanolin should not cause problems for babies or mums.  It is a naturally occuring substance that is collected when the wool is washed, scooped of the water and then undergoes a purifiying process.

I have agricultural training with sheep and we were encouraged to run our hands through the wool of the sheep (still on their backs) to help keep our hands from drying out.

There is a product called Lansinoh which is lanolin based and safe for bub. I used it from when Lorelei was a newborm for about 6 weeks and it certainly helps with sore nipples. Shields are also a great short-term relief.
