I keep Lily's car seat in the middle, except for when her father is down, then she goes over to the passanger side, as her father is excessively tall, and he usually drives when he's here, and she just wont fit in the middle seat anymore.

I have my daughter in the middle seat in the back. Unless I have more children in carseats in the car, they can't fit side-by-side unless one is reversed.  If I have a baby travelling with us in a reversed car seat I'll put the baby in the middle and my daughter's behind the front passenger. If I have 2 toddlers in carseats, I'll put one either side. My car is only small so I can't put one in the middle and one on the side unfortunately.

Well I have 3 kids and a medium size car so my youngest is in the middle in a restrained carseat, my next is behind the passenger and the eldest is behind the driver...

I put my daughter on the side behind the passenger.  I've got a falcon and there's a 'hump' in the middle (or else she would have gone there), but as it was uneven for the car seat, she's on the side

We were told when we bought our seat that the middle of the back seat is the safest.  We put our son there and we were glad we did as I had an accident that crushed the left side of the car.  Then when we had number two we had a huge discussion about what was safest and what was most convenient.  We decided to go for safety, so the baby is in the middle and my son on the back left (Passenger side).  This can be awkward at times but we think is best.

i guess with me it always depends, coz im always taking the seat in and out, i have two bolts, one in the middle and one in the back passenger side, i have started putting him in the back passenger side because he is getting way too big to haul into the middle and its harder to get him out coz once i undo the harness, he quickly jumps over the centre console and onto the  driver seat to pretend drive LOL!

I have my daughters car seat in the middle. Now when it comes to when she has to go in the booster, it will have to go behind the driver or the passenger seat (because it needs a shoulder strap for the booster seat)

Where do you put yours?

i put my daughter behind the driver side seat! This is because if someone hits us from the back i do not want my daughter to go flying through the windscreen!

Fair enough, but if she is properly restrained she should not go through the windscreen (in a safety seat and seat belt).  Safety recommendations are made from research into accident statistics and injuries relative to position in the car, but can not guarantee you against every type of accident.

well my daughter is properly restrained with both the harness and seatbelt. but my god how naive mothers can be? i have seen photos of a child (2 yr old) who sat in the middle seat of a car properly restrained, someone hit the car from behind and because the impact was so forceful the child actually broke the belts free from flinging forward....this resulted in the child coming through the windscreen! I unfortunately do not have the photos now, or else i could prove it, but it has happened and is likely to happen again!

And there I thought I was being fair and nice!  I am not naive.  I have had a very nasty accident that wrote our car off and my son had no injuries because he was restrained properly in the middle (the sides were crushed) so there are sides to every argument.  As I said above it is no guarantee and there will be accidents where nothing would have helped.

Perhaps if in the accident you describe the girl was behind the driver she would have injured the driver too.  You would be horrified at how much damage can happen from things/people/pets travelling in the car during an accident (a reason your pet should always be restrained in the car too).  Who knows?

All I know is that when my son's seat was installed they told me it should be in the middle and I am glad it was.  At the hospital when they checked him over after the accident they told me that most of the injuries children sustain in accidents are because their seat was not installed properly or their straps are not tight enough.  If everyone kept them tight and had them installed properly there would be far fewer children ending up in hospital.  Also people use seats and belts past their use-by date.  You should never use a seat over 10 years old or a seat (or belt) that has been in a collision over 40kmh.  They can be weakened and not as safe.

I had my seats fitted by a saftey expert at a child saftey day, they said the same thing that there is a huge misconseption about the middle being safer and its not. The sides are the safest.

You're right, there's actually an on-going debate about whether the middle or the back passenger side of the car. The back driver's side of the car is the most dangerous.  At the moment my daughter is in the middle, that's where it was fitted when I had the ambulance put it in before she was born.  I have a bolt in all 3 positions now as I travel often with other people's children.

Statistically speaking the safest spot in a car for a baby/child's car seat is in the middle of the back seat.  When there are two children the baby should be in the middle of the back seat and the older child behind the left passenger seat.  If there are three children, well, I guess there's not a lot you can do and one of them (preferably the oldest who can stand more of an impact in the event of an accident) would have to sit behind the driver.

My brother was a cop in the transport operations group for nine years and he told me that statistically speaking most cars sustain the damage to the driver's side front and back.  I'm not really sure what the logic is but I asked his advice on where to put the car seats just recently.

It's because if a car is about to hit another car the driver attempts to avoid the doors and hits either the front or the back of the car.

statistically apparently the left is safer but as you can see from my post that is no guarantee!

We put ours in the passenger side b/c she is getting bigger so its easier. It is also better if it is cold for me to sit in the car and bundle her up with the doors closed before she gets out in the wind.

Hi there, We have 2 children and we tried putting the carseat in the middle but there wasn't enough room for my son who's 7(we only have a pretty small car) so now the carseat is behind the passenger seat. Hope this helps.
