son will not poo full stop!

I potty trained my son in November and he did really well, grasping the idea quickly and weeing on the potty all the time within one day.  I noticed that he wasn't pooing (and he had always been a very regular, at least once a day kinda guy!) but thought it was something he would get used to.

However, 3 months later and he refuses to do a poo at all.  He did at times do it in his pants.  He did even at other times actually do it on the potty.  He once did it on the toilet.  But now he holds on as long as possible and has made himself horribly constipated.  It now hurts so much for him to go (he will stand there clinging on to me saying help me mummy) that he is obviously very frightened of going, which of course is exacerbating the problem.

I have been giving him a little prune juice disguised in orange juice and for the past 3 nights he has been around 8PM whilst asleep, but he moans and cries in his sleep while he is doing it.

He is also "leaking" slightly now, because of the constipation, so his bottom is sore, as he doesn't always tell me he has leaked and I can't always smell it to wipe him and change his pants.  He has developed a lovely habit of sticking his fingers in his pants and pulling them out to show me the poo if I don't realise quick enough that he has leaked!

I have tried sticker charts, telling him he can have chocolate buttons if he uses his potty, getting him a book all about how everyone poos, letting him see me go to the toilet, telling him he can do it in his pants, asking if he wants a nappy back on - none of this gets past his fear of going though.

Recently, we have noticed that he will also hold on to a wee if he has to go to a public toilet - we think it is because he is scared of the hand blow driers.

He seemed to start so well with the potty training, and now he seems to be so fearful of it all.  I've held off getting some kind of laxative from the doctor, as the prune juice seemed to be working - but he must have one hell of a backlog in there!  My second child is due beginning of June and I was hoping to have him settled into using the potty completely by the time the next one came along!

Any advice?

well, thanks all.  I've got Joe some Lactulose, which has moved the blockage.  I have let him do it in his pants if he wants to, and then pointed out that it is not hurting him to do the poos now.  I am also telling him the importance of eating all his veggies - at the mo I am aiming to get him regular again, and then tackle the doing it on the potty part!  Then off to the docs tomorrow so that they can feel his tum and make sure he has got rid of it all!

Hi i hope i can help you, children do tend to naturally retain their poos when its asked of them to go to the toilet/potty, it takes practice to relax to go to the toilet and children can feel certain feelings with making a poo in the potty such as fear or uncertainty as to what is coming out and wat it looks like, as they much prefer to do poo in their pants its more comforting to them.  also as parents we  tend to pressure them to go to the toilet and produce. Its just their way of controlling the parents from withholding their product from us!. I suggest he have a suppository because he is impacted, more so than constipated. The leaking is fecal fluid running around the mass that he has held on to. HE will result well from a suppository. he will be fine and would like to hear from you again .

I have a young son (19 mo.) who has battled constipation since he was 4 months. I'm not sure how to handle the issue of using the potty, but adding corn syrup to his water or juice on a regular basis is a huge help. We also use Acacia powder as a flavorless soluble fiber supplement. You can purchase it on the website "helpforIBS.com". When my son really gets backed up I give him "Smooth Move" tea (from Traditional Medicinals). I brew a few bags in a water bottle then leave it in the fridge and add it to his water/juice before bed- USE sparringly or it can cause tummy aches, but it really does get things moving. Good luck, I hope you BOTH find relief soon!

This is an example of what I was speaking about in my article www.minti.com/parenting-advice/4809/Number-2s-Help-with-Potty-Training/ where I've mentioned the '3D Cycle' Perhaps my suggestion in that article re: mineral oil might be of some assistance.

I never really had this problem with any of my 4 children but it sounds like a serious problem to me I think I would be taking him to my GP first to make sure this is not a medical problem .Then if it all checks out medically tackle the problem again .My son had a problem with pooing his pants even at school   up until he was a bout 8 and the Dr suggested a chocolate flavoured diet suppliment i think  it may have been parrachoc sorry cant remember the exact name ,but it was to help him stay regular and help  his body get into a routine of pooing at a certain time of the day.So maybe if you do seek medical advice ask the Dr about parachoc.

Constipation is the bane of anyone's existence.  I never knew the joys of doing a poo until I suffered from constipation (for the first time that I remember) during pregnancy and then after birth.  Very bad experience. No wonder he doesn' twant to poo.  You should probably take him to the doctor about this.  Prune juice is a good idea but you need a lot, not a little. He needs to drink copious amounts of water.  He will also need a fibre supplement.  I don't know what fibre supplement is safe for a little one so you'd need to consult your pharmacist about that.  I would tackle the constipation problem first because if it hurts - he's just not going to go until he has no other choice.  Good luck!

i think that it is very important to get some help for this young man straight away.. yes its common, but not always to the point where kids DONT poo..my son refused to poo in the toilet/potty too.. happy to wee there, but number 2's were a diferent story.. he would always hold off until i put a nappy on him for bed.. and then go.. eventually he got it and i didnt have a problem such as this.. however, my cousins son is12 this year, 12!!!! and he still has the same problem you describe.. he leaks.. always smells bad and has been to countless specialists to "rectify" this problem.. there is nothing wrong with his bowel.. (yet).. his problem is that he just cant be bothered to sit and go..too busy doing more important things etc ... this boy goes to highschool next year, i can t imagine the grief he is going to cop as a result of this...i dont know HOW to fix the problem.. its obvious that his diet isnt the issue.. its something else..but he needs to go . we know it.. you know it.. we just need to get him to know it..maybe a trip to the Dr  is in order before it gets way out of hand.. good luck.. xoxo

Before you tackle the why he is doing what he's doing, let's relieve him.  Unfortunately, about 6 months ago my oldest went through constipation because she refused to eat vegetables. We had to do a Fleet babylax, like a baby enema. Within 2 minutes she did poopie. That really showed her how important it was to eat what I gave her and now she has no problem. Maybe that would also show your son that if he holds it he'll need the "tube" again, and encourage him to go daily on the potty.  After that you may want to make sure he eats his veggies, apples with peels (the peels are good), raisins, one glass of prune or grape juice, etc so that he will make sure and go every day.  I hope this works.

I cant really give you any advice because my son is doing the same thing.  He wont go poo the potty but will go in his pants.  He holds it in sometimes.  All I can tell you it is common.  Both my nephews were the same and I heard other parents on Minti had the same problem.  I will read your answers and hopefully I can help my son also.
