ADD or ADHD
I dont know anything about Aspergers Syndrome - but my son has ADHD which is a different disorder. From what I have read, many children with Aspergers also meet most of the diagnostic criteria for ADHD as well.
After a lot of consultation with many different doctors, I chose to put my son (and his father and brother) on Efalex Fish Oil tablets. These little pills work extremely well for us. My youngest son (with ADHD), after two weeks on these tables, slept through the night for the first time - this was at nearly 8 years of age. After about 2 months the teachers had noticed enough of a change in Bens behaviour to call me and ask me what was going on. My eldest son, who has never been diagnosed but is extremely disorganised and distracted, was on the tablets for 3 weeks and his teacher called me into school. She wanted to let me know that Mick had improved dramatically, she had never seen anything like it. My husband has never been diagnosed - but meets all of the diagnosic criteria and then some!!. After about a month of being on the tablets, he was sitting in the loungeroom one night, looked at me, and said "my brain is not racing". It was the first time in his life that he had been able to sit still and not be compelled to move by the high speed impulses in this brain.
As I said, I cannot advise you on the Aspergers syndrome, medication may be important for this syndrome. If you are uncomfortable with the advice given by this doctor, seek second and third opinions. (I sought advice from 6 different doctors and researched ADHD treatments myself).
For parents of children with ADHD, I advise that they try fish oil tablets before medication. It cant hurt, and may keep the kids off the medication.
