Once you start on these drugs you can't stop them/ It will end up being a life time of taking these drugs. My be friend grew up on them and watching her go from a happy person to when she took the drugs, a really zoned out unhappy person. This is not who she was. Please think carefully before you decide to do this. Have you been to a natropath? You amy find something natural and less harsh there. Good luck with this. I understand you have a hard decision on your hands.

Hi...my son has aspergers....and as such can be very violent etc.....he went drug free for a year until his school couldn't cope and we had to do the whole drug thing...we tried anti depressent's etc and finally had to go to ritalin...... I know alot of press is bad re this drug but it stops my son from beating up kids, hurting people including family, being dangerous, allows him to concentrate and doesn't make him dopey...

I can now take him out in public for short trips as well..... I have even been able to do the shopping with him if i'm fast.......I have tried fish oil tablets but it didn't work for us...the diet change has helped though.....

We had no choice as his education was suffering and we had to get him to a level where he could stabilize his moods...He is still being watched constantly and he is no longer talking death ..... Ritalin is a fairly used med for aspergers and if it stops my son seriously hurting himself or somone else then ........

I dont know anything about Aspergers Syndrome - but my son has ADHD which is a different disorder.  From what I have read, many children with Aspergers also meet most of the diagnostic criteria for ADHD as well.

After a lot of consultation with many different doctors, I chose to put my son (and his father and brother) on Efalex Fish Oil tablets.  These little pills work extremely well for us.  My youngest son (with ADHD), after two weeks on these tables, slept through the night for the first time - this was at nearly 8 years of age.  After about 2 months the teachers had noticed enough of a change in Bens behaviour to call me and ask me what was going on.  My eldest son, who has never been diagnosed but is extremely disorganised and distracted, was on the tablets for 3 weeks and his teacher called me into school.  She wanted to let me know that Mick had improved dramatically, she had never seen anything like it.  My husband has never been diagnosed - but meets all of the diagnosic criteria and then some!!.  After about a month of being on the tablets, he was sitting in the loungeroom one night, looked at me, and said "my brain is not racing".  It was the first time in his life that he had been able to sit still and not be compelled to move by the high speed impulses in this brain.

As I said, I cannot advise you on the Aspergers syndrome, medication may be important for this syndrome.  If you are uncomfortable with the advice given by this doctor, seek second and third opinions. (I sought advice from 6 different doctors and researched ADHD treatments myself).

For parents of children with ADHD, I advise that they try fish oil tablets before medication. It cant hurt, and may keep the kids off the medication.

there are alot of medications for Asperger's Disorder, my son is currently taking citalopram this is an antidepressant which helps his moods, but can have serious side effects if not properly controlled! There is also a chance of weight gain as there is with clondine which he takes to ensure a good nights sleep. Please believe that this medication was perscribed after a few very serious consultations with our doctors. What you need to know is what side effects these drugs have and what effectiveness they will have on these boys to enable them to function.I know that because our son has Asperger's that in order for him to function, he will ned medication for the rest of his life! Do not allow his family doctor to place on medication that was meant for children with ADHD.
