growing pains- real or not

My husband claims he had growing pains as a child and thinks that every time our son winges its growing pains. He is jsut attention seeking at teh moment (I think). Do these exist. I was told an ongoing problem with my knee was this but I have stoped growing and the knee pain has not.

So proffessional and personal opinions please. Do growing pains exist?

Re: growing pains- real or not

I'm not sure wether growing pains exits......But as a child I would have days where my shins would ache so much that I was unable to walk. My mum took me to the Dr. who refered me to a poriatrist and it was found that my ankles turned in and I had no arch I had to wear othotics and still do. So I would suggest you get you child looked at just to be on the safe side.

YES!!!!! Our eldest son Ben used to get them in his shins really badly at night we would sit up and rub them for him. His Dad had the same thing as a child.

This is completely personal opinion.

I don't know if they are real or not, but if it seems to be ongoing or possibly a real issue I would suggest you check out what is causing it.
When I was a teenager I was back and forth to the doctors for years, and he continuously said it was just "growing pains", but I actually ended up having M.E. (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), and because they didn't tackle the real problem I ended up getting very ill.

On the other hand, I completely believe in a mother's instinct, so if your gut says he is attention seeking he most probably is!  (My son is constantly complaining about "tummy ache" at the moment, but only when it suits him!!)

I guess what I mean by all this is that I would trust your instincts, but if you actually think something is hurting him, it might be worthwhile to look into it and not just discount it as "growing pains".

I'm not that tall but I grew very fast in puberty.  I was tall at the beginning of highschool till everyone caught up with me!

And I got growing pains.  I had nights where I just couldn't lie down.  The only thing that would help (not get rid of) the pain in my legs was to pace the hallway.  Used to drive my mum nuts!  And then my legs would be sore cause I'd overexerted myself and it was a bit of a vicious circle.

But I also think there are plenty of other pains that can be misdiagnosed as growing pains (especially if you're diagnosing it yourself).  So if someone is experiencing "growing pains" its worth getting it  checked out by your doctor to make sure its not caused by something else.

Good luck with it all!

growing pains do exist, but can often be mistaken for restless leg syndrome. Because the 2 are so alike, the doctors always just put it down to growing pains because it is easier to diagnose.
Restless leg syndrome makes the legs twitch....making them want to roam the floor and walk as such....and you also get pains.
With growing pains you just get pain....really really babd pain along with pins and needles sensation.
I would personally see a specialist, not a doctor....because specialist would have a better idea than a normal gp!

going by emmysmum advise a specialist would be better, but you need to go to your gp to get a referral to go to the specialist....

#sigh# The amount of trouble that 'growing pains' can cause!
Growing is not meant to be painful; if it is, there's something wrong. My daughter was in undiagnosed agony for most of her childhood. The 1st sentence she ever put together was to tell me her knees hurt. It wasn't diagnosed until she was 12yo. Patella-Femoral pain was the diagnosis. It may take surgery (& certainly physiotherapy) to treat it. Cold weather & vigorous excersize made it worse. I rubbed her sore knees every night... Get it checked out my friend.

my son when he was about 8 used to wake through the night saying he had sore legs and i got him to walk around the house for a while and he would go to sleep for the rest of the night this lasted on and off for about a year and he hasn't had a problem since (i went to the doctor at the time and he said they were only growing pains), my daughter has just turned 8 and she has woken a few times through the night and i have done the same thing by getting her to walk around the house for a while and she has slept for the rest of the night but there was about a week where she would say her legs were hurting and after about a day or so i realised she was playing on it a bit so i mentioned to her what i thought she was doing and funny enough the pains stopped through the day but i have had 1 night since she has woke up with pains, what i was told that these pains usually happen through the night and from my experience they have, my thought is that you would get aches and pain as your body is growing because everything is stretching and your body has to adjust to this i know with me in the last 2 years i have gained alot of weight and i have experienced aches and pains i have never experienced before (or is it that i am just getting old)

They sure do. I had them as a kid/teen bad. They are especially prone to taller people.

hi there

i dont care what proffessionals think, growning pains do exist as i used to get them all the time when i was younger, they only usually happen when you are asleep and the pain itself wakes you. now that i have stopped growing, the pains have stopped, and i don't believe there is any other pain that i could relate to a growing pain..

about your knee, get a blood test or x-ray to check if it could be a mild arthritis.

I had a problem with my son when his dad told him that because he had a heart condition it was likely that my son at 13 would probably get it too My son then started experiencing chest pains and was convinced he was having heart attacks, I took him to the dr who took it very seriously checked him over then took him to a skeleton and explained how his chest cage was probably expanding as he grew, he said doctors call it chest pains and that it can be painful. So I guess they do exist, my son still gets the pain now and then but is fine with it now a dr has told him its definitely not his heart Hope this helps you
