Food that make a child hyper

I have noticed that certain food (white bread, vegemite) make my child hyperactive. He currently has a controlled diet at daycare and home (mostly homemade), but he will soon be going to a differnt career and I wanted to know if there are any other food that we should look at avoiding and letting the new careers know not to give him.

Has anyone modified their child diet to controll hyperactivity - What food did you eliminate?

It seems to vary from one child to another.'Sunset' red & 'Sunset' yellow food colourings, blue food colouring, artificial flavourings & preservatives are all common triggers. These things show up in almost everything that has been processed. So the safest path is fresh food, freshly prepared, organic if possible. Cold meats often are coloured & preserved; cheese commonly has food colouring added. So white cheeses are safer & cold meat is best cooked & sliced yourself... Keep making note of foods that show a problem. I hope your child's new carer is as committed to your child's diet as you are.

I tend to find that white bread makes my daughter a little more active too.....and it is because of the high sugar content. Also weet bix is another thing to keep children away from, as it attracts insulin, making the blood sugar level higher for a short amount of time....dangerous for the body- also makes kids crave for more sugar.
Fish and lean meats are good for children, as are vegetables and fruit....however just remember not to give your child anymore than 3 pieces of fruit a day....as the natural sugars can affect behavior.
Good luck.

my 5 yo has a reaction to preservative 282 found in bread, cake and some meat. you have to check labels as i have found that some brands have it and others dont. my son has been on bakers delight bread for 3 years and i noticed the change in him within a week. another bread without this preservative is tip top and sunblest. good luck

I have eliminated colours and preservatives form my sons diet becasue they affect his behaviour. Colours make him hypo, preservatives make him violent.  If your child is reacting to bread it is likely the preservative 282 and vegemite preservative 220. Visit this site and it can tell you more. www.fedup.com.au  Some really food sensative kids also react to salicilates and amines. The site has a basic booklet you can download to get started with a list of ok and not ok foods.  Hope you get a really understanding new carer becasue from ecperience I have found a lot of people don't beleive foods are my sons problem until they see him in action.

With my son its preservative 621 is the worst and the yellow/red colours.

Anyway hope this info helps

Our son is allergic to Amines and Salicylates too but mainly they affect his tummy more than his ADHD. Mind you we really know about it when he eats something he shouldnt - hes pretty damn full on.

Anyway, I wrote this advice a while ago, I thought I'd add it here to give you an understanding about what Amines and Salicylates are and what food they are in.

Hope this helps :)
