ear infection

Can anyone give me some ear infection symptoms? Our 4 month old has been getting up 4-7 times a night screaming her head off and stops when we pick her up. She is having trouble going to sleep, staying asleep, and has a runny nose and congestion. We have checked for teething, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. We are going to the doctor later b/c she has never woke up more than twice, and only then to eat.

If you think your child has an ear infection, it is important to get it checked ASAP as if the eadrum bursts it can cause scarring and even hearing loss. The symptoms are temperature ( but not always!) pulling at or rubbing their ears, pain, being unsettled and unable to sleep ( due to the pain.) As babies have smaller eustacian tubes that are more bent than adults( the ones that link the nose and ears) they are particularly susceptible to developing ear infections when they are congested and have a runny nose. Bacteria make their way in and puss develops behind the ear drum, eventually bursting the drum if not treated.  Once burst, the worst of the pain goes, however, they will still need traetment. Antibiotics and ear drops are usually given. Sometimes the infections are hard to clear up so it is important to return to the doctor as the course of antibiotics nears completion as if there is still redness or bulging eardrums, they may need a second dose.Hope this helps!

My little one went through the exact same thing at 4 months and it seemed to happen just after his needles.

I went to the doctors and it was just a common cold.....even though he was pulling at his ears all the time they reckon he didnt have anything wrong.

This is how i got through it i got some baby balsm for his chest, Saline drops (they fight it and cry but a few in each nostril before food or bed helps them to drink a bottle and sleep) and i was also given some dimetapp drops which cleared up the congestion.

Hope this helps he is now nearly 8 months and has brought another cold home from preschool so i can fully sympathise with you all night wake ups and the poor little one just wants cuddles with mum (and now i have it)

THis is what I have experienced with my child when he was a baby.  Tugging at the ears, fever, having a cold, very irritated, waking up at night etc.  As soon as the doctor checks her ears they will know if she has an ear infection.  Also, make sure they check her throat.  Mean time giving her a congestion, runnynose, pain reliever medicine will help her through the night.  My doctor gave me a list of different cold fever medications and dosage chart according to weight and age.  Maybe you can ask your doctor for one of these.  Maybe your doctor has a help line where you can call in and tell them the baby sysmptoms and they can recommend over the counter medicine.  My son is 4 years old I still have this chart.    Good luck!!!
