itchy skin

During my 38th week of pregnancy I started getting a serious itch on my arms. I decided to head to the doctors in search of some answers. My main concern was for my baby given that I'd read about the secretion of bile into the blood due to a poorly performing  liver and the effect it can have on your unborn baby. The doctor ordered a blood test for liver function and bile duct secretions and all came back negative.

I was hoping it was just a 'pregnancy thing' and that it would disappear after Amberley was born.

No such luck. It has flared up again and is quite raised and feels quite hot. Has anyone else suffered from this? It seems to be at its worst when exposed to the sun or it's a hot day.

I'm heading to the doctors again tomorrow. Hopefully relief is in sight. But if anyone has had this condition (and knows what it is) , please let me know.

cheers Rie

Yes - it sounds like the condition called PUPS which is a pregnancy condition. I got this all over my lower tummy at 41 weeks gestation and had accupuncture to heal the condition. I thought it was my stretch marks irritating, but I didn't get any in the area of the condition. Within 6 hours of accupuncture, it was gone. PUPS is a form of shingles.

My trip to the doctors went well. Put on steroid cream and no more yummy smellng soap or moisturisers. It's just me and sorbelene.

Looks like it is a dermititus (sp?) thank goodness .

Yes, this sounds very much like PUPPPS.  Another member has written a very informative article about this.  Try to search for it.  Otherwise, type PUPPPS in the Google search enging and you'll come across articles on it. Essentially, it's a pregnancy related rash that is extremely (hellishly) itchy and only typically subsides by the birth of the child.  It is harmless to the child.  It is extremely upsetting for the mother though.  It usually occurs in first pregnancies towards the end.  Treatments range from steroids (pretty full on) to menthol cream and pintesol (I think that's how you spell it) baths.  I took the naturopathic option and took a copious amount of a lot of flaxeed oil tablets (can't remember how much but I found the dosage on the internet).  This was so effective that the conditon was gone in two weeks before my baby was actually born which is apparantly very unusual.  Good luck with it.

Seeing you doctor is your best option. It could be one of many things an allergic reaction or some sort of skin condition only a doctor can say for sure. Have you been unwell at all lately? Some viral infections can leve rashes.

I get the same thing between my knees.  Dont know what it is?  Thought it was something in the bed bighting me but it doesnt happen to my husband and I have washed everything on the bed a million times.

It comes and goes.  I get fairly itchy skin in general, I have found its when my skin gets really dry and sometimes its the washing powder I use.  I have had to change since I was pregnant.  It helps with the general itchiness but the one on my knees still comes and goes.
