Ok, I know this isn't a parent question but I need to ask this question.
So here goes. I have been on anti-depressants for about 6 days now and for 3-4 nights I haven't been able to sleep. I have got insomnia, along with nausea and tiredness(but can not sleep)
I called the doctor and told him about it and he said it takes several days for the medication to kick in and I will have insomnia for a few more days and if it don't go away to come in and he'll give me something else to try.
Now my question is.. To whoever who is/has been/on anti-depressants, did you get insomnia? And how long does it last for.
Thanks
Yes I did - for a few weeks. That is why my dr said to take it first thing in the morning. I also had bizarre dreams but it all settled down. It doesn't for everyone and I had friends taking the same drugs who can't now because of side effects. Hope that helps.
My 5 yr old has a shocking time every time they give him anti depressants......He doesn't sleep and we always get told it takes 3 to 6 mths to get in your system.....he has been on three so far (prozac included) and always has the prob with sleep and with him it has lasted for a minimum of 6 weeks b4 we stop and try another....... he also will sit on the lounge like a little zombie as he doesnt have any energy........
I also have been on anti depressants and feel the same.........I have been medicated 3 times in 5 years and end up going cold turkey cause i don't like how they make me feel......That said my son cant handle them cause they make him manic so he wont ever be able to have them....... .And i am a control freak (yep its true).......
Trust your doctor and wait the time out cause they do take a while to make a difference and they do have side affects in this time......If its no good then you just try another
I HAVE BEEN ON MY MEDICATION 5 AND HALF YEARS AND LIKE ALL MEICATION IT CAN CAUSE SIDE AFFECTS BUT SOME CAN VARY FROM SERVERE TO NARMAL ADJUSTING I HAVE BEEN ON MANY DIFFERENT ONES TO TRY AND FIND OUT WHAT SUITS ME AND I FINALLY DID BUT TRY AND RELAX HAVE BREATHING SPACE LIKE HAVE ALEAST AN HOUR TO YOURSELF TO UNWIND AND THINK NOT BAD STUFF BUT POSTIVE STUFF BUT I FOUND I WAS VERY AGITATED ON SOME AND SOME I FOUND FOUND MAD MY MIND RACE BUT THEY R HELP LINES LIKE MEANTAL HEALTH DIRECT OR PET THEY R 24HOUR SERVICE AND HEALTH DIRECT BUT TRY AND SEE SOMEONE AS WELL AS TAKING MEDICATION AS THAT HELPS ALOT AS U NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE HOW U R FEELING AS IT DOES HELP ALOT BEST OF LUCK MATE
Hi there, I have been on anti-depressants now for about 18mths. I was diagnosed with abdominable migraine due to stress from a marriage break-up and 4 kids being born very close together. My symptoms after starting the tablets were exactly the same as yours. Believe me it gets better. It only lasted a couple of weeks for me and I have not been put in hospital since starting the tablets. Just give it time, keep in contact with your doctor as they may need to alter your dose until they get it right. Take care and be positive. Cherine.
In sounds like you're taking an SSRI which is a notorious group of modern anti-depressants which make it difficult for you to sleep, orgasm and relax. OF course, they affect everyone a little differently. Try taking them in the morning so the full effect has worn off a little by the time you go to sleep at night. Unfortunately, the symptoms only get a little better over time and you may find if the drug affects you this way that you will have problems sleeping. You should, however, also have extra energy shortly though to balance it all out a bit. Anti-depressants take 6 weeks to work clinically but the side-effects can be felt straight away and are at their worst in the first 6 weeks. Whatever you do, only take the dose prescribed and raise any issues with the prescribing doctor. Hope this helps.
hiya sweety it really depends on a whole bunch of stuff. I have been on and off anti deps for 5 years and each one has been different. 1 made me sleep 24/7 and another made me really agressive, one made me have horrific nightmares and the ones im on now i have to take onther one so i sleep.
Now with them they do take up to a month or so to work properly but with most it work in a few days to a fortnight. if you cant sleep try an over the counter sleeper like restivit. it helps you sleep and worked great for me and quiet a few of my deppie friends. if your not already seeing a councilor i would recoment it and www.depnet.com.au
is a very good site and has a lot of people there with depression.
yes been there, I was on them for 2 years, hated them big time, could not sleep the whole time, thats why the doctors usually give sleeping tabs also, bad mixture. Those I never took. and yes I had insomia for those two years till I took myself off the a.depressants and that was also a horrible time. Goodluck
Im sorry that you experienced that. It must have been terrible. But its really not reccomended you ever take yourself of anti depressants. If you were having such bad effects you should probably have gone back to the doctor and tried all the different ones till you found one that worked effectivaly for you :)
My doctor told me that too!! My dad even tried to tell me that I shouldn't be taking them until I talk to the doctor and I kept telling him no, I have to until the doctor gives me something else :)
Thanks Mel :)
Hi , What time do you take your medication ?Maybe if it possible take it late afternnon /early evening .I know when I was on them if I forgot to take them early enough I would have trouble getting to sleep ,just a suggestion but yes ,if the problem persists you will have go back to your Dr.
I actually didn't sleep before I had my meds so I can't really say that it gave me insomnia, I already had it.
I do know it took a couple of weeks before I started to feel any benefit at all to my medication, I think like everyone I wanted a quick instant fix but its not going to happen like that.
Persist but like Tad says if you aren't happy at all with the way its going go back to your dr
xxx
It takes about a week or two to 'right' youself and up to a month for full benefits. What you are experiencing is normal for the new introduction if however you are the same after two weeks then its possible that the dose it to high or the meds arent right...dont dispare there are plenty on the market I know Ive tried many since my diagnosis.... best wishes!
