Croup..........

My 3 year old Daughter gets Croup every winter so far and If your kids dont get it believe me it's the scaryest thing. she comes into our room at like 3am and you hear this "death rattle" and a struggle to breath. at first we thought she had chocked on something. can anyone give me any info on croup and if there are any ways i can stop her getting it as even though we have had her up the hospital so many times in winter i dont want to this winter.

Croup..........
Hi There. Know how you are felling.I had the same problem with my son. The only thing to do is to see if your doctor can give you something for it like a ster -pill. Thats what my doctor gave me. Good luck with it all.

Croup..........
The following is from Westmead childrens hospital
www.chw.edu.au/parents/factsheets/rescrouj.htm

The viruses that give kids croup are the same ones that make the common cold come...so it cant be prevented .you can have a flu shot to lessen only croup that has been caused by a flu virus.....

If your child is really upset and cant breathe properly and seems sick then you really have to see a Dr as they can give them steroids or adrenalin to help them breath better.....symptoms worse at night cause its colder then

Mild Croup  The following is taken from  www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetails.aspx)

Mild croup is, when a child is calm (stopped crying), she does not have a stridor (noisy breathing) and is not short of breath. Here are some things you could try if the child has a croupy cough but no shortness of breath.

  • Having a croupy cough and noisy breathing frightens children, and being scared makes the situation worse. Comforting is very important. Cuddling, sitting the child up (in her parent's arms or on pillows), and giving her something to drink (which helps with the sore throat) can all be important.
  • If the child has a fever or sore throat, paracetamol can be used (see the topic 'Using paracetamol or ibuprofen').
  • Going outside into the cold air for a few minutes sometimes seems to make breathing easier. Make sure the child is well wrapped up, as it is the cold air that is wanted, not a cold child.
  • Mild croup generally settles within a couple of hours, and the child goes back to sleep
