Xavier wont eat!

Hi All,
Id really love some suggestions here... Xavier has a ripper of a cold and a cough to go with it, but my problem is he wont eat. He is 11mths old and he eats everything we eat, along with a bottle of cows milk, but today he hasnt eaten a single solid meal, he just wont eat it, and every bottle he has had during the day wether it be juice or milk or water, he has brought some of it back up. Im giving him a bottle of water now with some pentavite in it to hopefully put some vitamins into his little body and help him get rid of this cold, but today has been so hot im worried he might get dehydrated. How can I get him to eat, and how long would you let an 11mth go for without eating before you took him to hospital? Ive never had this problem before. Thanks for your help, MonyQ.

First, when your sick most of the time you don't want to eat.  It's ok.  I would not focus on making him eat as more as giving him fluids.  Little ones can dehydrate very quickly, especially if they are vommiting or having the runs.  Give him pedialite as much as he will take.  My doctor told me that if he is having at least an ounce an hour then he should be ok, that is just a gauge though.  I would not worry about having to go to the hospital unless he becomes very lathargic, his eyes are sunken or he has not peed in over 6 hours.  When he is feeling better, he will want to eat again.  I've been thru this many times already myself

Hi mate,

Just wanted to say Hydralite Icypoles and juice (premade) are what I use on Sumara when she gets like this . . Also Dimetapp is great for drying up the nose and cough really quickly. Sumara is only 10.5 months and i'd be lost with these things . . .

Cheers Kellz

Hey Mony, you have some really great answers here so i won't repeat them but totally agree. When your in the chemist next see if you can't pick up a bottle of Greenridge-cold and flu for kids, its a liquid form and is all natural. It is so great for kids and once in their immune system it makes it harder for them to get colds. I put a little in our girls juice or milk.

Best Wishes Hon Blond.

excellent idea, you can also those Isotope ice blocks for dehydration in a couple of different flavours. I have a stash of orange flavoured ones in the freezer all the time, they don't taste good but kids don't seem to know that. My girl has one every time she is feeling a little off.

Hi, Jayd must have the same thing, he has a terrible cold and cough and he will not eat not even his favourites, I have been making sure he is getting plenty of fluids water in particular and I bought some pureed fruit which he is kind of eating and he will eat yoghurt and weetbix but not much. Doc said as long as he is drinking plenty of fluid not to worry to much, has he got the runs?? Jayd has on and off.  Is he still active?? if he is just keep his fluids up and keep an eye on him, if he is listless get him to the dr or hospital just to make sure he is not dehydrated. xx

I think you should just keep an eye on him.  I would cut back on the milk and give more water, and try to get him to have something with vitamin c in it, those jars of baby food with orange and mango would be easy to eat i would imagine.  If you are worried, seek medical advice. mother knows best!

hi there matey, this happened to my caitlyn and the doctor said as long as you keep their fluids up, there is no concern for to worry about them eating, as most children or adults will not eat when sick...Hydralite icy poles are good if he cant hold anything down, and they replenish the electrolyte levels in their bodies...Hope he feels better soon.
