Why give Coke?

I don't mean to sound judgemental, but I just want to know why any child would be given coke? Any softdrink is a terrible thing for kids, but coke would have to be the worst and I was wondering why a child would even have it offered to them? If you are a parent who allowed coke, did you have a reason and what affect did it have on your child? My daughter is turning 4 soon and this will be the first birthday that I will allow cordial, but water will be offered first and my child won't be offered cordial unless she really wants it cause everyone else is having it.

Why give Coke?

my 4yr old son has had tastes of everything including softdrinks but his fav drinks are... a squeeze of the bottled lemon juice in water and milk lotsa lotsa milk... i cant say he goes totally without all the yummy things in life, like icecream or chocolate...i know i'd hate to be without all my fav sweet things. provided it's all in lil quantities and they still get all the things they need. i really cant see anything wrong with it, moderation is the key to have a good diet follow the food pyrmid and you really cant go wrong there is a small place for sugars and a bigger place for all the good things like fruit, veg, breads and cereals in an enjoyable diet.

Why give Coke?

my hubby and i are not big coke drinkers, i think the only times we drink coke is if it is mixed with wiskey or something, so not very often, i really have no idea why parents would give there children coke, as i believe it to be one of the worst habits you could give your child BUT.. some parents may give it to there child if there diabetic (the type that needs a quick sugar fix) but generally they give there child sweet lollies or somethinga as they don't rot the teeth quite like coke does, i do know a good use for coke though, its great for unclogging drains, it is a pretty powerfull cleaning agent lol, i'm serious, it really does work, shove some in your toilet bowl and give a scrub you'd be surprised how clean they come up

Why give Coke?
We drink diet coke caffeine  free in our house.
Because we can.
Miss Cheeky Chops is not fond of juice and I really don't like cordial.

Here's a question for you: How much junk food do you feed your kids?

Water is always offered first, but I give juice to my son.. I myself love water but also like to experience different flavors. I don't like drinking the same thing over and over again. So I offer the juice. All kinds of flavors...   Of course I don't give him gallons of it.. Just something for a different sensation.  We don't have cordial here in Canada...  But I guess you could say it is a bit like frozen juice.  Where you just add water.
But I try to give always the 100% real fruit juice although these days it is hard to find something that is 100% with out actually squeezing the fruit yourself...

As for coke.. For the kiddies that is a no no...  Some times Camille might get a very small glass of coke. But once in a blue moon.. And only once in a day.. You should see the size of the cup.. It is very small...

Why give Coke?
Hi
I think i am the mum that a lot of people are talking about
But as our daughters dietician said for her it is still fluid.
It is high calorie which she needs.
No we don't give it to her in excess but we have found that on some days after all avenues are exhausted that a sweet fizzy drink is what she craves.
You see with cystic fibrosis the body processes food and drinks differently
She will never be overweight. We could only wish to have that problem with her
Some days she refuses to drink her milk even.
She has gastrolyte, glucolyte or some type of powerade type drink to replace the salt she loses at a very rapid rate.
Some days she even refuses to drink this.
Soft drink is often our last and only option to get fluid into her before she dehydrates
She likes bit of coke now and then.  Funnily enough she's not fussed on a lot of other flavours.
Even the hospital brings these kids a soft drink a day when they are in hospital so how bad can it really be.

We often make her a cup of tea using my  tea bag after i have made my cup.  It is very weak and a lot of milk in the hope she drinks enough liquid for the day.
Sometimes you will do anything to get your child to drink rather than watching them dehydrate.

Like all things moderation is the key

If you don't want to sound judgemental why hide???
Luv Deb

Why give Coke?

my cousin has this condition, and yes they need to eat alot of junk so to speak lol, lollies and all that stuff as they need the calories, and yeh they are skinny no matter what you do lol, my aunty keeps him away from soft drinks though, as she wants his teeth to stay intaked as much as she can lol, so she gives him jelly babys, chips and all that other junk food to keep his weight up, i think the reason she keeps away from soft drink is it can get sloshed around the teeth too much, which happens naturally when anyone drinks it, and obviously as they need these sorts of calourie full things daily his teeth would not stand a chance with soft drinkso she gives him other things full of calouries

BUT... i do know why you give your child soft drinks and i understand, as your child has a medical condition

I was just saying somewhere else that us parents are built to feed and take care of our young till the very end......and when it comes down to your child needing something to keep her hydrated you do what you have to do. Deb if you don't mind could you send me an email about your child's illness. I would like to learn more about it

thanks hugs and kisses

i think that the problem here is sometimes we get caught up generalising and forget about the parents who have children with illnesses such as yours deb.. i think its an oversight by all of us.

starting the first sentence of saying you dont want to sound judgemental, might put some parents off as we all do the best for our children. Now i read here not very long ago where a mum had to give her child coke due to medical reasons, so maybe we all should think how would this person feel if she reads this... So soft drinks are not good for our children, but sometimes it is ok to give in moderation, there is worse things out there then giving your child soft drinks..

Why give Coke? It's a personal choice
And one that I say no to. My kids have water and soy milk. They dont have juice, cordial or soft drink. Cola is so bad cos its full of sugar, caffeine and junk. Stuff that kids dont need. Now when the boys get older they might have a DIFFERENT soft drink occasionally. Im not going to say no forever. They are still young though at 2 and 3.
I have no caffeine in the house. No tea, coffee, cola or choc usually. I will drink coke and have choc occasionally and the boys might have it a couple of times a month as a treat but a BIG no to sodas at their age.
Rots the teeth and rots the tummy hehe thats what my dentist used to say

Oh and ill add here that my sisters and I werent allowed to have soft drink or bubble gum for many years (i think I was about 11) then once i started having these things i got holes in my teeth. I still brushed as I always had, nothing changed except what i was putting in my mouth... i truly believe it was the coke and bubble gum...

yeh they recon that it dosn't matter how many times you brush your teeth after you've had a sugary drink, or something else sweet, you cannot scrub it of, it stays on your teeth for ex amount of hours, can't remember exactly how long, and soft drinks are the worst for rotting teeth, and coke is the very worst  as it also contains cafine

Why give Coke?

honestly, i only see it as a problem if you allow it in excess..my children have coke.. occasionally.. and they have other softdrink as well..and they are neither obese nor hyperactive... my son has had some dental issues, but not as a ersultof the soft drink.. but more a result from the lack of flouride in the water where we live.. some  kids simply prefer water/juice to soft drink. this could be because its all they have ever been offered.. or it could be becuase they just dont like the fizz.. that debate could go on for hours..do your research on juices.. you may be surprised to find that a lot of them are just as high in sugar content as the soft drinks..like everything else. moderation is the key.. as long as they are getting more water than soft drink.. then i dont have an issue .

PS i do however have issue with very young children being given soft drink.. coke in bottles is a BIG nono

Why give Coke?

fizzy drinks can dislodge objects stuck in throats

the fizzier the better(diet cokes the best for this)

intresting info to have if you have i child thats a chocker

so as a drink no iv never given it to my girls BUT my middle child has had diet coke on numerous occasions and some of these have been out in public

things are'nt always what they seem and there may be a reason that the woman at the mall giving the small child coke is doing it.

Why give Coke?

I had a dietician friend tell me once that no one should be drinking ANYTHING other than milk or water. Apparently the obsession that a lot of people have with flavoured drinks is a huge contributing factor to childhood obesity!

Having said that I have occasionally had people offer my eldest son fanta. Often they were shocked when I asked if they had something other than fanta and that I would prefer he have coke to fanta. My son seems to have some bizarre reaction to something in fanta and would (quite literally) BOUNCE OFF THE WALLS uncontrollably for several hours after he had had fanta!

I think that this is really an individual parenting thing! It is easy to say I would never do that with my child but really if the child that you are talking about is not yours I don't think you have the right to judge!

Does fanta have aspertame in it? I heard aspertame is worse than sugar because it is a chemical. I myself have tried to stay away from juices and pops (although I have given her the ocassional sip of rootbeer because she doesn't like the fizz and makes a funny face).

Mostly for 2 reasons: I personally feel that sugar isn't good for children or adults.....and because when she gets older, if I give her a good foundation of health and liking water, then she will hopefully be an occassional sugary stuff drinker and a big water drinker.

I agree with that my kids are totally banned from fanta it makes them soooo hyper then they come down from that and are aggresive and then they get a head ache both of them have had the same reaction and they were both given it at partys by ather people fortunatly neither of them want it because of how they felt afterward

I also find parents giving coke to their children a bit bizarre. Sure, there is the sugar and that can't be helpful to anyone particularly in this age of chronic obesity.  But, on top of that, there is the caffeine.  What child needs to be introduced to a stimulant and an addictive substance at that?  Don't they have enough to contend with?

That is what I worry about with cola - the caffeine and acid.
I don't have caffeine in my house (cept the occassional fair trade organic yummmmm chocolate) so wouldn't let my kids consume it at home.

Herbal Teas are a blend of herbs, spices and fruits. They do not contain any tea leaves, but are called tea because they are packaged and infused like real tea. Since Herbal Teas do not contain tea leaves, they are naturally caffeine free.

No caffeine!
I don't drink any hot drinks either (could burn your throat)
As I said only occassional organic chocolate.
Caffeine is a drug and so I stay away from it like alcohol etc.
I also have low iron levels- caffeine inhibits iron absorbition which is the main reason why I don't drink cola etc.

Some people don't drink anything with caffeine in it.  My best friend, a mother of 3, has no caffeine in her house except what's in chocolate on the rare occasion they have chocolate in their house.  They don't drink tea, coffee, and softdrinks, they don't have those energy drinks and they avoid chocolate as much as possible but do give chocolate eggs at Easter time, and they also have those little chocolates for birthdays and Christmas. That's as much caffeine as they allow the family to have.  THe children are wonderful and have good attention spans.  I drink coffee, occasionally tea, but there's no way I would allow my daughter to have even the last sip in my cup so having it in the house does not mean the children have to have any. They learn boundaries by being told "this is for the adults, not the children"

its hypocritical....everything in moderation is fine (apart from alcohol and other drugs of course)
it gets back to the parent and whether they are patient enough in teaching their child about moderation....but iguess each family does have their own rules....i just think its hypocritical how parents will say "oh no you can't have coffee" yet they sit there infront of the child indulging themselves!

So you give your child tea and coffee? You have never sat down for a drink with alcohol in it in front of your child? Ever? Or do you give her that too.  No, caffeine is not ok to give to children, neither is anything with a high sugar content UNLESS THERE IS A MEDICAL CONDITION AS I SAID EARLIER.

I do not drink alcoholic beverages...... and yes i allow my daughter to have a small cup of tea and if i have a cup of coffee, i will give her a small cup and dilute it with extra milk!
I must be the worst parent in the world miss bear, because i feel that children should be able to have a little taste of everything (apart from alcohol) and decide themselves as to what they want!
ANd i think you will find that you'll be better off allowing your child to have these things rather than forbidding them....because children do sneak, and children do betray.... no matter how well you may teach them and educate them!
