constipation

Hi

My baby boy is currently 3 months old. For the fiirst month he had a soiled nappy every day. After that he only had a soiled nappy after 3-4 days. Now at 3 months he only has a soiled nappy after 7-8 days.

Is this normal, should I be concerned

is he breastfed? breastfed babies dont tend to have routine bowel movements, if on formula you should expect regular poos.

someone else suggested prune juice, and water is another must.

if you are breastfeeding you can try to eat more fibre, drink more water and even prune juice yourself, some of this will pass on to him and may help.

unless he is in pain and his stools are hard and a funny colour ie white, i wouldnt worry to much he will develop a routine and once solids come into his diet ihe will most likely settle into a daily routine.

Is your baby breastfed or formula fed? Have you changed formula recently? Is your child feeding less frequently than before?

I've read that some formula fed babies may suffer from constipation because of not getting enough water. I suggest feeding more often to get more fluids in, or supplementing with water (though check with your pediatrician). Some people, as you've seen from some answers, say try prune juice. I would hesitate to give any kind of juice at only 3 months of age.  The best thing I guess to do is phone your pediatrician and get some safe suggestions.

Good luck.

Hi there

Poor litle one.  I can relate to this.  My little boy is now 4 and suffers from constipation a lot.  Please see the doctor and get advice just to make sure all is ok and its nothng more than constipation.  As he is very young I am sure they will not resort to medication which you dont really want.  I posted a question similar to this a while ago and got some good advice.  From what everyone said, water seemed to be the answer.  So give as much as you little one will take.  From what I can also make out babies and toddlers dont need to go everyday I guess they are just like adults but not to go for 8 days must be painful for him and will surely make him grumpy.  Good Luck and I hope it works out well.

Is your baby bottle fed or breast fed.  I have been told that a breast fed baby can go up to a week with no pooping.  I would take the baby to the doctor if it is more then that because it could cause more problems for the baby in the future.

this is not normal for a child so young to be going so long without pooing! I would strongly advise that you try some prune juice in boiled water.....like 15 ml prune juice  in 50 ml boiled water.
Or also you could try brown sugar in boiled water....as it was the remedy used in the olden days.
If this doesn't work i would recommend infants coloxyl and put it in his bottle (if he is formula fed) other wise measure out half the dose and give to him straight!
When my daughter was at this age i found gripe water to help.....
And as a last resort only, suppositries for infants.
Get this sorted out ASAP as constipation can result in haemorrhoids (sp?)..... and they aren't very nice!
