Raw carrots

At roughly what age did you start to give your child raw carrots? My daughter's recently turned 4 and has just started to eat raw carrot whole, not grated. Is this alright? I'm always with her just in case she chokes.

I've been giving my son raw carrots since he was about 12 months old - cut up of course. There's nothing wrong with raw carrots. Though I would advice about giving too much, as kids will have a yellow tinge their skin. But this goes away though.

Choking can happen at any time, at any age. So if you are worried about carrots becoming a choking hazard, just cut it up in several thinner strips.

Yeah, i might just do that for a few months Izzy, until i'm a little more confident in her in eating the carrots. Great idea. thankyou.

I must be evil, my daughter was 7 months when I gave her her first raw carrot stick.  she chewed and spat and rubbed it on her gums....then again she's not a choker on account of it's a struggle getting her to actually swollow anything that's not in a bottle.

My daughter's not a chocker either, and she's had raw grated carrots heaps of times. I was just unsure on what age really was ok to give her the whole carrots thats all. thanks for the input and advice. appreciate it. :)

It really depends on your child but I am pretty sure at 4 she would be fine. Jaidan is 3 and can eat them fine. Just supervise :) You should always supervise anyways with kids eating :)

I honestly can't remember! I know that for her 3rd birthday party I had carrot sticks, celery sticks, raw beans, cherry tomatoes and various chopped up fruit on a platter and she loved the celery sticks and carrot sticks the best. The reason I even thought to put them out is because I knew she liked it, and had been eating them for a very long time by that time.  I was always with her though in case she choked.  My daughter is in the 3-4 year room at daycare and I have taken in carrots and celery and various other things for the group to eat and it's encouraged to provide those sorts of things rather than just apples and oranges every time. The staff in the room cut them up and share them with the group and these kids are all 3 to 4 years old.

Thanks heaps for your input. Yeah, my daughter's always had carrots like grated etc, and it's just now she's had them raw whole. Funny isn't it that every parent is different. I've never trusted my self in a way to give her the whole carrot until now. Silly me huh. LOL. I'll know better next time not to hold back on things.
