Home births is it worth it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi to all

I thought i would ask all minti members what they think on home births. I was watching sunrise this morning and yesterday ,regarding this subject and the amount of people that beleive in home births is amazing.

i personally don't  like it i think its so dangerous,my first 2 pregnancys and births were amazing healthy sizes 8pound 9 and 8 pound 1 both 20 min labour no stiches no drugs how perfect then i was having my third imagine if i opted for a home birth, all i am going to say is i had a blood clot on the lung and my son was having breathing difficulties and ended up in neo natal for 10 days my clot was picked up a couple of days prior and only because i demanded for tests they kept saying its the size of the baby etc. etc. now if i didn't it would of been tradgic.no one no's whats going to happen with there birth all could be fine one minute and really bad the next i am just so interested in wondering what other minti members think .if they have was it bad and if so would they do it again or not at all

i hope i have made sense lol happy easter all mwah

most of the birthing centres here in perth offer homebirthing midwives i have a friend who is a total naturalist and had both her bubs homebirth and she actually said she enjoyed giving birth because it was so relaxing she even had her son in the bath with her when she was in labour with her daughter amazing i think as long as the mother is totally sure of what is happening and what would happen if somthing went wrong and have a doc standing by there should be no problem... me personally i'll take all the drugs i can get when it comes to giving birth... so i wouldn't do it for that reason but it is definatly right for some mothers...

lol a c section terrifies me. when they said i had to have one i was so scared, luckily she came on her own hey. but i was hanging nappies out that afternoon and took her for a walk outside and was walking all over the place that day.  i couldn't imagine being laid up for 6 weeks. i did some home-help for a lady who'd had a c section and she couldn't do the washing, she basically couldn't do anything.  Her husband was home for the first 2 weeks, then i was there for a month before she could manage things on her own. she even needed help getting the baby attached for a feed because it hurt her to get the bub on.

I really wanted a homebirth with all of my pregnancies mainly because i find hospitals very impersonal..its like a big factory or production line.Do the nurses and doctors really remember anything that happened during Mrs browns birth .Ive since read up on homebirth ive foundit can be a very loving a wonderful experience tailored to your liking.Having elder siblings watch on,grandma and other relatives be there. In a brithing room or labour room its a minimum of 3 people.I would love a home birth now but my baby does have kidney problems so i cant. But i think its uop to each individual to make up there mind obviously the risks are high with any birth what so ever.

I recently read a book called "MISCONCEPTIONS". it was a wonderful and enlightening book on births and pregnancy practices all over america and the world also. And one paragraph on labour at home indicated (this is not quote for quote) that having a baby at home with a midwife they tend to take more time to help birth your baby with the least amount of harm to your baby and perineal as they can ease the baby out slowly and as i have found personally that i will be cut before the hospital would take time to do this.I have watched home birth videosand they are amazingly beautiful with sweet music playing and family awaiting the situation but also watching on with love a special wishes nd encouragement.I am not knocking hospital births as ive had all my healthy lovely kids in hospital but im really praising homebirth too.

I haven't had a home birth, I think it is fine as long as if things start going wrong, you are close to a hospital and can get there fast. Sometimes there are things only a doctor can fix.

I take your point, but if you think maternity services in the UK are well funded, think again! We have major shortages of midwives here. Having said that, because of the lower overheads, its actually cheaper for a baby to be born at home.

I'm in Australia - North Qld - and know of quite a few families who opted for a home birth and that's what they got. Hassle free. They had a midwife, an ambulance on stand-by, and were living within 10 minutes of the hospital in case anything went wrong.  As someone already commented, it takes about half an hour for the docs to get ready for an emergency so what's it matter if 10 minutes of that time is spent in an ambulance? you still have to wait for the doctors whether you are at home or in hospital at the time of the emergency.

My pregnancy was high risk and I didn't get much choice in what went on.  I have done a lot of reading on home births and think it sounds wonderful.  When I actually had my daughter it was drug-free and without incident but they wouldn't have risked it. I was prepped for a c-section and they had everything ready to go saying I would probably end up having one. I didn't and the labour was only 20 minutes and she was out. No stitches, no drugs, no pain, and she was ready to take on the world! I think if all goes well with the pregnancy and you don't live far from the hospital there's nothing wrong with a home birth.  People in fields stop long enough to give birth then pick the baby up, put it in a sling and keep going.  I think it's about people using their judgement and deciding what's going to best suit their family. If a person is going to be stressed in a hospital it will probably be the cause of something going wrong.

HI! I had a home birth with my second, and wish I'd had it with my first!

I did a lot of research, and wouldnt have been allowed to have it if I'd been any kind of high risk. Here (UK) there's always an ambulance nearby who is informed of what you're up to, plus you have two midwives to yourself (when I was in hospital the first time, I hardly saw them as I had to share them with so many other women). Also, there are few genuine emergencies, ie the midwives see them coming and call the ambulance to take you in, or if you're already in hospital they just take you into surgery, it takes about the same amount of time, believe it or not! Statistically in the UK, homebirths result in half the number of Caesarians and other interventions as hospital labours, which speaks for itself in terms of success and safety IMO.

I don't like hospitals - cant relax in them - so I'm sure my labour was far shorter as a result of being in my own home. I didnt get worn out and need "assistance", and I didnt have to worry about when to leave my DD1 and make the drive in to the city. And I could relax in my own bed straight afterwards. There was no mess, as far as I can remember - the midwives loaded the washing machine and set it off before they went. I felt in control, which helped me stay in charge of the pain IMO. And my poor hubbie, who was off work sick at the time, could sleep in his own bed while waiting for labour to really get going, rather than risk crashing on the journey to or from hospital (believe me, he would have, he didnt even notice half of my contractions, even though I was bouncing up & down like a demented Tigger on my exercise ball in front of the telly for them)!

In case anyone wants to do their research, I'd recommend this site as the best place to start. There's also a good Yahoo group for homebirth - great for asking questions. For homebirth in Oz, this is the site.

With all the MRSA etc in hospitals these days, who says hospital is so safe for birth anyway? The hospital where I was born lost a baby to that last year.

Anyway, I believe we should all have the choice. If you're high risk, then hospital is unavoidably the place for you. For the rest of us, it should be where ever you feel happiest, as that is where you will labour best. For me, that was at home.

Home births
I think it does take a lot of research and sensibilty. Its about trusting your own body. I don't trust doctors generally so want to educate myself about MY body. I want to be informed.
I am not pregnant but I want to feel prepared for my next baby.
I am planning on a water home birth. I want to ENJOY the birth. I felt like I had elements of enjoyment in the births of each of my children but I think I can enjoy it more - for what it is worth. I don't think it is selfish. I don't think as a mother I should feel a matyr.

I had 3 drug free natural births cept it was in hospital. Here is hoping for a more enjoyable experience next time.

Some home births go really well. I suppose its what risk you have. Jaidan would have been bad cos he was in NICU for 7 days but Chase was perfect birth and I wanted to leave 2 hours after.
Sounds like it was a good thing you didnt have one...

I don't believe in home births either, but now the people who have their babies at home do alot of research, and there's always some one there with them if something goes wrong.

If something does go wrong like a blood clot like you had, they're rushed straight to the hospital.

Everyone's different in what they do, and the home births would make the person more comfortable, and wouldn't stress so much.
