IS THIS JUST ANOTHER PHASE

Hello All

My son is 4 in June and is going through an odd stage.  Whe he does not get what he wants or does not want to do something even as simple as washing himself he throws an almighty tantrum.  Its like he almost goes into a rage.  He starts going red in the face and clenching his fists and starts hitting himself in the head with his hands.  He also bangs his head, thankfully only on something soft like the bed or sofa but still head banging all the same. God forbid he should start banging his head on the wall or something like that.  I can understand and handle the tantrums but the head banging.  Has anyone else had this? and whats this all about?

Thanks, Kastol

I find it quite interesting that your son has displayed an awareness of headbanging surfaces, for instance the bed or sofa. Perhaps it's because he's tried other surfaces before, I don't know. But I do know that your reaction to his outbursts has to controlled. I mean, attention is a reward for negative behavior. I don't get that he's always been this way from what you write. And if a condition is beginning to show itself, then by all means medical advice should be sought immediately. But if it's just a child attempting to control a situation, that needs to be considered to.

Don't really know in your situation
But my son is 9 years old and has ADHD when something upsets or stresses him, he head butts the walls and slaps his head HARD in frustration, he also claws his head and calls himself dumb names
All very distressing to watch and to handle
I would definitely monitor it and seek a medical opinion if it continues
