Bedtime. What did you do with your one year old?

Just turned one yesterday. All of a sudden he's gone from the perfect sleeper to not letting himself go off to sleep. Up until now he would go straight to sleep at night. He didn't have much sleep today either but I don't feel he's over tired. He's been awake in his bed for over half an hour now. Any suggestions? Should I change my tactic and let him cry past five minutes now. I've previously been doing the controlled crying method.

Are you saying that this is the first time he's done this? If so I'd write today off as being one of 'those days' and have another go tomorrow. I still have the occasional off day with my son (and he turns 2 on Tuesday), so don't read to much into it just yet. Little people are just as likely to be a bit out of sorts just like we are.

If things are still a bit rough tomorrow resort back to the controlled crying - 5 min, 7 min, 10 min

In addition to this, keep in mind that he might be coming down with something or perhaps a tooth might be causing a bit of irritation.

I've done the exact same thing as kobesmummy. It's a great technique to use i think

Bedtime. What did you do with your one year old?

hi there

i had the same thing with my son. excect at bedtime he would scream till he threw up! ( still does occasionally) Kobe wouldnt sleep during the day for a while, which made night time crazy, as he was over tired and would be so cranky.

i had to do the controlled crying. i would even just give him up to 5mins crying then i would walk in the room, lay him back down in his cot and just sit on the floor in his bedroom. dont look at him ( read a mag or something to help pass the time, thats what i did) and dont sit close enough for him to touch you.  just sit there for a few minutes until he calms down( when they see you there, it can help ease the stress for them), then quietly walk out of the room. you may need to do this a few times each time you put him down. Each time you do it, try move a little bit further away from him. and hopefully, eventually he will just go to sleep when you put him down.

Also, he may have developed a bit of a fear of the dark? a small night light can help as well.

i hope this helps. it take patience, but it worked for me. My son is now 2 and in a "big bed" so its fun trying to KEEP him in there at bedtime hehehe, thats a whole different thing though

take care

Personally I was still breastfeeding my daughter to sleep or rocking her in my arms when she was that age.  She fell asleep at the breast on and off til she was 2 and a half. Maybe not the advice you were wanting, but that's what I did and it has worked. She is sleeping soundly all night every night in her own bed and has been since she turned 2 and moved to her own bed.  Good luck with it whatever you want to do.
