I recently weaned off brestfeeding by accident becuase I was supplimenting her feeds under pressure from inlaws and so my milk supply decresed and now at 3mths - I can't recover it. So as of 1 week, she has been on a sole formula diet and I noticed today that her stool was like an adult not a baby. Its the first time it has happened but should I feed her some water during the day to help? What are your suggestions?
Cool boiled water and if you ar still concerned you can add 1 teaspoon - 1 tablespoon of prune nectar which is bought canned and can be frozen in ice cube holders until required.
don't be alarmed it's fine the baby's stools are bulker due to the extra crap that is in formula but could cause constipation if worried just give colded boiled water
i was told water with a bit of brown sugar in it. but i couldnt tell you if this definatly works as i have been fortunate enough that my child hasnt had constipation.
If you are concerned about the constipation, your little one is old enough to take water alone. If you are giving her formula with iron it can be the cause since brestmilk does not contain as much as prepared formulas. On another note, I had to stop feeding my baby breast and was very upset. My cousin told me though that you can get your milk supply back. If she will still take the breast then give it to her only. Even if you have just a few drops coming out you can build up that supply again. My cousin told me that you have to have them feed alot, every hour or so for the first few days. She told me that she had her 2 kids breastfeeding and her doctor told her that her supplied increased enough to feed twins!!!! (Don't give up if you really want to breastfeed. Be patient and take a few days, but I promise, if you do soley breast you will get if back, it's not to late!
I formula fed both of my boys on Karicare which is a great formula and one that was recommended in hospital. Formula fed babies do have nugget like stools but this doesn't necessarily mean they are constipated, if you baby is straining when trying to do a poo that is when they are constipated. Some formula fed babies do get constipation, my first child did but second didn't, it is normal. Formula fed babies do need to be offered water through the day to help with this and also to help with hydration. If the constipation persists you can offer your baby 'Coloxly Drops' in their feeds or water. But before you do this I would recommend you see your Doctor first. Hope this helps.
Just one more thought. My kids were both formula fed and they both got constipated if I used the powdered formula. My doctor said it has something to do with one of the ingredients. They were both able to eat the same brand in the concentrated form. Best of luck to you and your little one :)
How old did you say she is - 3mths? At times they do do harder stools - however, if they do remain that way all the time, and it seems to be causing her discomfort, you may wish to try a different formula to see how that goes. If she is only 3mths old, you shouldn't have to supplement her diet with water, you might want to wait until she has solids, (around 6mths), before you do that.
Of course if she is ever sick with a fever or diarreah, you may wish to ensure she is hydrated by supplementing with water then.
I'm sorry that you were under pressure from your in laws to supplement your breast feeds. I hope that they aren't putting undue pressure on you, it is tough enough to be a new mum.
Yeah, I wish I didn't introduce the bottle till later, even though she was a pro with taking bottle and breast no trouble. It was my Husband who brought home the first furmula under instruction from his mum. Then one morning when she was 1-2 weeks old I saw him feeding her in the morning, I was shocked becuase I hadn't considered or discussed it, but she seasmed fine with it and it became easier for me, also my husband always seamed embarrased at the breastfeeding in public and since we are often out her breastfeeds dropped off and now the supply is not enough and she looks at me ike "hey were is the food?" Next time I will be more confident and form in my choices.
Good on you for being so strong about this and if nothing else, it seems to have built up your own confidence with your decisions. Maybe next time around you can be a little more forceful with your wishes. I was lucky enough not to have inlaws. People think it's tough doing it alone, but I think it sounds a lot tougher trying to deal with partners and their families. I wish you all the best with your little bundle.
I am not sure is you mean your baby is 3 months, but at this age, she shouldn't need supplemental water. she will get enough from the feeds. plasticine and play dough poop is normal. in saying that, if you are fearful she is getting constipated, ensure you are mixing the formula as directed. if you continue to have hard stools, try changing brands of formula and if this doesn't work, then offer extra drinks of cooled, boiled water several times a day.
Yeah she is 3mths. Yes her poo was like a playdoo and it was only once. I think I'll keep an eye on it, it didn't seam to cause discomfort but some fustration in getting it out. I wish I didn't wean off so soon now.
