best bottles for bottle feeding newborns

I have a young baby and unfortunately after trying very hard to breast feed I developed blistered and cracked nipples, then mastitus on top of post natal depression - all in all a very trying time.  I am now bottle feeding and trying not to feel guilty.  I would really like some advice on what bottles are the best for for feeding little babies and which ones reduce the amount of air that they take in so they don't get so much wind,

Hi

I just wanted to say that you should not feel guilty You gave it your best shot. I went 7 weeks with my girl before we gave up and I was the same. We used every day bottles, Nuk Colic teats with air flow system (from the chemist) and S26 Gold Formula. Our girl is now 11 months old and she is booming. There is nothing wrong with not being able to breast feed, those who can are just lucky.

Don't beat yourself up over it cause it's just not worth it and if your happy your bub's will be happy.

Chin up

G

I found avent to be the best for my first when he started to refuse the breast. It's really trial and error though I think. Good luck, I hope things get better for you!

It really depends on your bub... we tried many different types.

We found some teats were too firm and Rylan had trouble sucking from them.

We also found some teats too short for his high palette so he wasn't getting the proper stimulation to suck.

We also found the flow of some teats to be to slow.

All of these teats just made Rylan frustrated and hungrier.

You just have to trial and error to find the one that suits your baby best. Hope this helps, as we had assumed they were all the same and had gone out and bought heaps of one particular brand which turned out to be unusable for us.

I experienced the same as you and I STILL feel guilty!  Lachlan is now 4 months and still using bottles.  I have been exclusivley pumping for him but a week ago started weaning him onto goat formula.  Will do it over a period of about a month.  We used Avent and he was forever bringing BM up and now use Dr Browns for the last 3 months and have a changed child.  Hardly brings anything up anymore!

Hi - this is an aweful stage for you but not uncommon.

Avent have a great range and all can be put in the dishwasher for easy cleaning.  The cheapest I found was at this site....they also have easy to use microwave sterilisers.

Also, if your nipples are still sore try bepanthan or paw paw cream.  I dont care what any lactation consultant or nurse says.......BREASTMILK DOESN'T MAKE IT BETTER!  I breastfed both my babies and both times I got cracked nipples if I didn't take care of them with additional creams and both times the nurses would say just put breastmilk on them - which I did before and after feeding but it really is not enough.  My mother agreed with me and she had 5 kids.

I do hope you are feeling better and getting lots of support.  Breastfeeding is not for everyone.  One of my friends in my mothers' group had terrible troubles both times and worked out because she has such fair and sensitive skin and red hair, it wasn't unusual that she would have troubles.  The second time she didn't muck around, just straight onto the bottle and hasn't looked back.  You have do what is best for you and your health in order to look after your body.

I don't know what hair and skin tone has to do with breastfeeding, but I will say that with cracked nipples I used breastmilk and it cleared it up.  It took a long time because I was feeding at least once every hour but it definately helped.  It also helped with conjunctivitis and many other things.  But I would be interested in finding out more about the skin tone affecting breastfeeding do you have any links?

Avent are definately the best. I bottle fed both my boys and Avent help reduce wind and colic and they didn't leak as some other do. They also seemed much more settled during and after each feed.

I know only too well about the guilt as I also had issues with it but I promise it fades and you find yourself feeling less guilty. I was very lucky that I had such a great support network, I hope you do too beacuse it helps. Your Community Nurse is usually a good person to talk to.

I have seen many types of bottles since working in the younger groups in daycare and the best ones i've found are Nuborn and Avent.  They are wider so easier to clean and because they are short stumpy ones it's more comfortable feeding them.  As a breastfeeder it took a long time to get used to holding a baby to give a bottle LOL and they are the ones I found easiest to hold and the easiest to clean and also due to being wider they are much easier to mix formula in, no spilling the powder.
