Punctuation

This may sound very petty, and is sort of not a question.  Or it is - Why do some people write long pieces of advice without so much as a capital letter or full stop?  I don't care how good the advice is, but I really do not have the time to sit here and work out what exactly the person is trying to say.  I find that it is as if there is no regard for anyone reading it, as they have to spend time deciphering it and the person writing it, couldn't even be bothered to put in the effort to even put a full stop in.  It shows a certain disdain for others.  Am I the only one bothered by this?

Personally I don't have a problem with spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or abbreviations, but the odd full stop or comma does make reading and article a whole lot easier and for people who do not understand English as a first language it could be very difficult to understand what is being said and good advice could be lost.  Eg:

he eats shoots and leaves

What does that mean exactly?

No It does't affect me at all....I like reading peoples articles...i joined Minti to write about something I am passionate about...My kids....I Look back at my articles and the first one I wrote is probably one you woudl skip...See I had a brain tumour removed and with this I lost alot of confidence....Heck I lost alot of everything my ability to remember...My ability to use large words to describes something and things like that...There are sometimes reasons why people write the way they do...Some of the articles that are shared on here I am sure have been done with tear filled eyes...I read it no matter the punctuation....So my answer is No it doesn't phase me.....Maybe because I am still slack on the punctuation and full stops...hehe
Cheers

I feel we each do our best, and yes sometimes we may not have correct context, grammar and/or punctuation.Thank goodness the majority of minti members are not so judgmental as to be too bothered by this topic..........I feel if it is such a pet hate then by-pass the offending articles and get over it.Some of our members are shy and lack confidence,if they are castigated by the more confident and educated I am concerned that they will hide back in their shell.I for one am happy to spend extra time piecing together their words as usually they have some very needed pearls of wisdom to share. Please if you do find a piece of advice/article that is a little hard to understand for whatever reason a)take that extra time to read it or b) minti mail the author and offer to help them with their work.Regards to all of you hugs Merle

Hi there

I too get annoyed with this. If I come across an article that has no full stops and is written in one big block with no paragraphs, then i generally just pass it by. I'm sure I have probably missed quite a few great, informative pieces by doing so but I just don't have the time. In return though, I am certainly guilty of not using capitals when I type i. As for people using English as their second language, generally I can tell when this is so as their spelling may not be "spot on" or phrases a bit mixed up. This doesn't bother me at all and thumbs up for giving it a go - keep at it!

I think that if you are going to the effort to write an article or comment on one, then effort should be made to proof read it first to elliminate any mistakes and to simply ensure what you have written actually makes sense.

i dont think i'd go as far as to skip an article because of it though... just might take longer to read it and that would annoy me more than the grammer or spelling... i dont like reading things that are too long... just a personal preferance.... :)'s

I know it's difficult.  I have had trouble before too.  I stopped and thought about it though.  I was taught correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.  Some people were not fortunate enough to have learned that.  I also think this site is open to everyone, those of englinsh and non-english speaking backgrounds alike.  If English is not a first language it's the most difficult language in the world to learn.  I think Nell was right about the confidence of that person also.  As difficult as an article is to read I think that the person needs to be able to write about what they feel passionate about.  On a site as large as this, there will be many things that people say or how they say it that others find offensive.  It's just the way it works.

Though I don't think anyone is being disrespectful, I totally agree about the punctuation, and grammer too.

I do find articles that are improperly written difficult to read and I'm less likly to read something like that, no matter how good the subject might be.

Maybe drawing attention to this difficulty will help others take more time with thier writing.

I think that sometimes people just under rate themselves and so just write from the heart and think that no one will probably read it anyway such is their low self esteem
Personally I prefer to read articles no matter how long or short with sentences, punctuation and even paragraphs, but I don't like to knock the confidence of anyone just sharing for the first time
I think better presented articles come with confidence

Well, somehow, I’m glad someone raised the question. I thought, being foreigner, I was the only one not to properly understand what some people meant in their advice, but it's reassuring to see that other people do have difficulties too. I suppose for some people, the way something is written doesn't really matter since they get the tune, they therefore get the meaning with no trouble.

And then again, it's true that one is easily carried away while writing, so it comes as no surprise that one might forget punctuation.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that people so doing are disrespectful, but if they could punctuate their advices properly, it would certainly show their consideration for the other members (and it would perhaps make their advices more pertinent – at least in the eyes of people like me, whose English is not bad but is still a foreign language!)

I’m pretty sure a lot of people never thought that the lack of punctuation in their advice would cause other people not to thoroughly comprehend them, and I’m also quite certain that no-one ever thought of purposely misleading anyone here. However, I hope these members would now realise that it can be quite hard to get their point and that they would try to write more appropriately from now on. Thank you for the ones who at least will try!!
