Number 2's

My 3 year old wont go Number 2 (poos) on the toilet he will only do it in his nappy.  He screams and says it is scary to go on the toilet.  I have twins also who are 11 months and I am getting sick of putting a nappy on my 3 year old whenever he needs to poo.  He will be going to Kindy in 6 months.  So i want him to be fully trained by then.  He is fine doing wees standing up on toilet.  Any one help out there?

all the other advice i have read here seems good. but i have one question for you, are you trying to get your 3 year old to sit on a normal toilet seat or do you have a kiddie seat?  it does make a lot of difference, especially for boys who only sit down for poos, my son was also afraid of the toilet, its new and big so its scary to them, i bought a kiddie seat which sits under the normal one and he loved it.  its his special seat and at 4 years old now he stills uses it on occasion.  you should try one as well, but if it doesnt work, then subtle perserverance is all i can sugest.

I Have tried both types a seat on the toilet which also has a removable tray in bottom of seat and also have tried potty.   I will give it a rest for a while and try again soon.

Thanks for the advice.

Please check out the other debate going on re this issue. there are also a few articles written on minti re chronic constipation which can be the next step from here if you force the issue with the toliet. Let him have a nappy. Relax on the whole issue. nappies are disgusting for 3 year olds but the alternative problems caused if too much pressure is placed upon a reluctant child are far worse beleive me. the nappies are no big deal. I doubt he will do a poo in the few hours he is in kindy - if he does pop a nappy in his bag. It will not be the first time the teachers will have seen this problem. My son however, never did a poo at nursery, if they can hold a poo for days they can hold a poo for 3 hours if they choose too. Kindergarden should not be the push for changing his behaviour. Instead you must try to refocus upon a healthy attitude towards pooing. Leave any talk re toliets and poos for a few weeks, then encourage him to sit with his nappy on until he is doing that happily. A smaller seat can help, although if they shift position it can be even scarier.

To date you don't have a medical problem. You have a problem that is causing you stress and embarrassment. This you can with strengh ignore. If it esculates you could have a chronic condition that requires years of medication. see the other advice and if he starts to go days without a poo get to the doctors QUICKLY. Best of luck pnp x

This is not uncommon behaviour for number two's particularly in boys, infact they are quite notorious for it.

Not much you can do but to continue to encourage the toilet, he'll do it when he's ready, you dont see many 30 year olds pooping in a manappy after all.
